The Relationship Between Financial Aid And Freshman Persistance At A Midwestern Liberal Arts College, Jack Phillip Powell
Dissertations
College student persistence has been one o f the most important topics discussed in higher education over the last 25 years. The consequences of student attrition from our colleges and universities are immense for the individual student and institutions alike. One of the purposes of student financial aid is to promote student persistence. The need for empirical research to assess whether financial aid is accomplishing this vital purpose is critical Research is particularly important given the significant shifts in policy brought on by the 1992 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. This study addressed two research questions. The first deals …

Outcomes Assessment: Developing An Electronic Assessment Database As A Model For Collection And Analysis Of Data, Joni E. Spurlin, Sarah A. Rajala, Jerome P. Lavelle, O. Jerome Hoskins
Sarah A. Rajala
As the ABET process in each institution moves toward outcomes assessment, it pushes each program to develop and implement its outcome assessment plans. Assessment plans document how programs will gather data, interpret the findings, and use the results to make improvements in programs, curricula, and resources. The ABET team at North Carolina State University (faculty from each engineering discipline along with assessment-knowledgeable personnel) has developed a model that academic programs within the College of Engineering use to determine what data to gather, where to obtain the data, and what criteria may be most appropriate when interpreting the data. This paper …
Career Planning Needs Of Students, Carol Nowakowski
Career Planning Needs Of Students, Carol Nowakowski
Dissertations
This study examines the perceived needs of college students in relationship to sex, employment, and academic rank. Specifically, factors that suggest the changing student population in higher education and the impact such changes have on providing career counseling services to meet student needs are presented. In addition, the differences between sex, employment status, and academic rank in relationship to perceived career planning needs is presented based on a review of literature. Results of a survey to students attending Davenport University (formerly known as Davenport College) during the winter 1995 semester are summarized in terms of perceived career planning needs based …

Promoting Equality And Access In Higher Education: A Comparative Study Of State Sponsored Preferential Policies In Great Britain, India And South Africa, Lanaia C. Dubose
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Recent U.S. court decisions striking down affirmative action policies in college admissions have caused universities to seek diversity programs that can hold up to public and Jesa1 scrutiny while maintaining diversity on campus. The purpose of this thesis is to study the preference programs of other countries and determine if successful elements could be duplicated here in the United States. Specifically, the study looks at whether countries who use equality of opportunity programs (which focus on training initiatives) are more successful in increasing enrollment and hiring numbers of minorities than equality of outcome measures (which focus on quotas). The study …

Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell
Homeschooling: An Overview, Deborah Abell
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Even though homeschooling is not a new concept, it was a relatively small movement until 30 years ago. By the late 1990's, there were over a million students being homeschooled in the United States and the numbers seem to be growing quickly. Homeschooling has become a viable alternative to traditional education. No longer a peripheral movement, it now reflects the diversity of American society. Even though homeschooling is receiving increased attention in the popular press, there is a paucity of research on the subject (Knowles, 1988). This study is the first of its kind and reports the results of a …

Publications and Research
Published in one of the first collections to focus on independent writing programs, A Field of Dreams. The volume offers a complex picture of the experience of the stand-alone. Included here are narratives of individual programs from a wide range of institutions, exploring such issues as what institutional issues led to their independence, how independence solved or created administrative problems, how it changed the culture of the writing program and faculty sense of purpose, success, or failure.
