Kate Ward-Gaus was the Assistant Vice President of Student Wellness at La Salle University. She retired in January 2021. Prior to retiring, Kate worked in substance abuse counseling and wellness for more than forty years. She joined La Salle in 2006 and became the Director of the Alcohol and Other Drug Education Center prior to becoming Assistant VP in 2017. Kate was part of the leadership team that prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in February 2020.

Purpose. The purpose of this explanatory mixed method study was to identify and describe what exemplary mental health leaders in Puget Sound area mental health facilities serving veterans do to maintain their physical, emotional, intellectual, social, vocational, and spiritual health based on the six dimensions of Rosen's (2014) healthy leader model.
Methodology. An explanatory mixed methods approach was selected to allow the triangulation of data to increase the validity of the findings. One group of measures against the COVID-19 pandemic have been the non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). NPIs taken by the NCAA included suspension of athletic seasons. Suspended championships during the pandemic have decimated the world of sports and led to changes in athletic role identity and social connectedness, which negatively affected student-athletes’ mental health (MH). One psychological characteristic that has the potential to support the MH and well-being of athletes is mental toughness (MT). MT is associated with successful sport performance and positive MH outcomes. Athletic training students can experience stress and symptoms of burnout and there is empirical support for a relationship between stress and burnout in health professions students in fields such as medicine and nursing. 1-3 However, prior research on the relationship between stress and burnout has been limited in athletic training students. Past research has indicated promising results with mindfulness and mental health. This study examines the relationship between mindfulness and mental health, physical fitness, and academic performance for middle and high school students enrolled in health and physical education courses. The Calm app was utilized in part of the Calm Schools Initiative. (n.d.) as part of the intervention. The treatment group took part in mindfulness activities twice per week for the duration of the study.
