Examining The Relationship Between Expectancy-Value Motivation, Barriers, And Physical Activity Engagement Among Adults With Visual Impairments, Tiffany Nicole Kirk
Examining The Relationship Between Expectancy-Value Motivation, Barriers, And Physical Activity Engagement Among Adults With Visual Impairments, Tiffany Nicole Kirk
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Despite the documented benefits associated with physical activity, adults with visual impairments tend to participate in insufficient physical activity for health promotion. Current literature suggests that barriers to physical activity, or factors that constrain participation in physical activity, may inform the physical activity participation of adults with visual impairments. The purpose of the first study was to develop and validate a brief scale designed to measure the magnitude of barriers to physical activity for use among adults with visual impairments. Expectancy-value theory may offer insight into physical activity by examining adults with visual impairments’ expectancy beliefs and subjective task values …

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In 2018, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who captured the attention of the world with her story of survival from the combatant and abusive hands of ISIS. Murad used her voice to speak out against wartime sexual assault and in doing so, has supported the wellbeing of women and girls around the world. A Goodwill Ambassador, her example and work has visibilized their trail of courage and lifted up the importance of work to support their wellbeing. This research, in albeit a very small way, seeks to follow Murad’s path. Though literature abounds …

Is Technology The Key To Prevention Of Falls Among The Elderly In Rapidly Aging Societies? A Case Study Of Kunming, China, Phoebe Kiburi
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
As the aging society rapidly becomes more dominant in the world, there is a pressing need for different stakeholders to tend to the needs of the aging sufficiently. This is crucial in ensuring the robustness of the healthcare system as a whole; given that it can only be as strong as its weakest link. This study focuses on one of the areas of need of the ageing society: fall prevention.
Numerous studies have been done on interventions by the government, private entities, elderly people and their caregivers to prevent occurrence and recurrence of falls. However, most of these have been …
Multidimenstional Balance In Youth With Visual Impairments, Adam Pennell
Multidimenstional Balance In Youth With Visual Impairments, Adam Pennell
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three studies which examined multidimensional balance in youth (≤ 21 years; Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004) with visual impairments (VIs) using the Brief-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Brief- BESTest). These studies have the potential to inform (adapted) physical education curricula and therapeutic/rehabilitative practices by providing novel understandings of balance performance in youth with VIs. If identified as a meaningful mechanism of action, the assessment and development of multidimensional balance in youth with VIs should be given elevated status by practitioners. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate multidimensional balance in youth with VIs.

High school students (n=185) first completed questionnaires assessing their interest and self-efficacy for the PACER and push-up fitness …
Examining Self-Contained And Integrated Physical Education Experiences Among Individuals With Visual Impairments, Rebecca Coffey
Examining Self-Contained And Integrated Physical Education Experiences Among Individuals With Visual Impairments, Rebecca Coffey
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Introduction. While research to date has examined the views of individuals with visual impairments toward integrated public-school physical education, little attention has been given to examining perspectives toward experiences at residential schools for those with visual impairments. By understanding the perspectives of those who attended physical education in both contexts, researchers can gain valuable information about particularities that can make experiences meaningful or challenging. The purpose of this study was to examine how individuals who experienced physical education in both integrated and residential school settings viewed their physical education class experiences. Methods. This study utilized a retrospective interpretative phenomenological approach …

School Health Program: Impacting Physical Activity Behaviors Among Disadvantaged Students, Chia-Liang Dai
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
BACKGROUND: Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more apt to experience lower availability of nutritious foods, lack opportunities to exercise, and lack access to recreational facilities, and thus, are more likely to be obese and at greater risk for developing chronic diseases. We review school health education programs' impact on physical activity behaviors among disadvantaged students. METHODS: The inclusion criteria of the study were articles: published in English with full text between 2011 and 2017; focused on school health education programs for disadvantaged school‐aged students; assessed programs including a physical activity component; examined school‐aged children and adolescents' physical activity behaviors; and …
Maximizing Nvivo Utilities To Analyze Open-Ended Responses, Xiaoying Feng, Linda Behar-Horenstein
Maximizing Nvivo Utilities To Analyze Open-Ended Responses, Xiaoying Feng, Linda Behar-Horenstein
The Qualitative Report
Open-ended responses are widely used to explore and understand participants’ experiences and perspectives in a variety of fields. As one of the most powerful computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, NVivo allows researchers to analyze open-ended responses to survey and/or interview questions, as well as other text data like reflective writing, image, and videos. The purpose of this paper is to describe and demonstrate how the NVivo word frequency, text search, and matrix coding features can be used to analyze qualitative data from a longitudinal evaluation project. The authors show how the matrix coding feature maximizes NVivo utilities in an analysis …
Conceptualizing Emotion Within Physical Education: Exploration Of Antecedents And Outcomes Using The Control-Value Theory Of Achievement Emotions, Kelly L. Simonton Jr
Conceptualizing Emotion Within Physical Education: Exploration Of Antecedents And Outcomes Using The Control-Value Theory Of Achievement Emotions, Kelly L. Simonton Jr
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Investigating student emotions has gained attention in motivational literature because they represent mechanisms for interpreting experiences and behaviors. Physical education (PE) is critical to promoting skills and positive experiences that lead to an active and healthy lifestyle. Yet, in PE there is a dearth of information and theoretical evaluation of student emotions. To address this gap, this dissertation uses the control value theory of achievement emotions (CVTAE) as a lens to investigate student emotions, antecedents, and outcomes in PE-related settings.
The purpose of Study 1 was to investigate effects of an attribution-training treatment on participants’ emotions and motivation toward a …

Impacts Of Mitochondrial-Targeted Antioxidant (Mitoq) On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Function In Peripheral Arterial Disease Patients, Jiwon Song
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disease that affects the arteries in the legs, causing decreased blood flow and oxygen transfer capacity to the skeletal muscle. This ischemia in the skeletal muscle in PAD patients may result in increased inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction due to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Inflammation and ROS production have been shown to attenuate vascular function in PAD patients Mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants (such as MitoQ) have been shown to combat ROS and inflammation in various diseases.
Purpose: We sought to examine the impacts of MitoQ intake on vascular function measurements in PAD patients. …

The VO2Max (0.87, p =.001), HRmax (0.85, p = .002) and LaMax (0.67, p
Altered Baroreflex Sensitivity In Young Women With A Family History Of Hypertension, Evan Matthews, Kelly N. Sebzda, Megan M. Wenner
Altered Baroreflex Sensitivity In Young Women With A Family History Of Hypertension, Evan Matthews, Kelly N. Sebzda, Megan M. Wenner
Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works
A positive family history of hypertension (+FH) is a risk factor for the future development of hypertension. Hypertension is associated with reductions in baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). Therefore, we hypothesized that young women with a +FH [n = 12, 22 ± 1 yr, body mass index (BMI) 21 ± 1 kg/m 2 , mean arterial pressure (MAP) 79 ± 1 mmHg] would have lower BRS compared with young women without a family history of hypertension (-FH) (n = 13, 22 ± 1 yr, BMI 21 ± 1 kg/m 2 , MAP 77 ± 2 mmHg, all P > 0.05 between groups). Continuous …
