The Art Of Acknowledging That We Know Nearly Nothing, Jimmie Leppink

Health Professions Education

It is early March of 2018 – Winter is supposed to be coming to an end and so is a book I have been writing together with two fellow scholars in the field of education. Writing a book, your mind goes back to conference discourse, visiting scholar trips to institutes in other countries, conversations over a good beer, literature you read, things you learned from your teachers, intriguing questions from some of your students, questions that kept you awake at night and remain unanswered, and so much more. The reiterating melody or Leitmotiv in all these activities, related or unrelated …

The Single-Item Questionnaire, Henk Schmidt Feb 2018

The Single-Item Questionnaire, Henk Schmidt

Health Professions Education

If, in the context of a survey, one wishes to know how old a participant is, one question suffices: “How old are you?” The same applies if one is interested in participants’ alcohol use per day, or whether the person is married or not. The use of a single item to measure constructs is also common practice in disparate fields such as job satisfaction ,1 stress research ,2 or happiness studies .3 In fact, how many different ways are there to ask how happy a person is? In education however, things are different. There, multi-item questionnaires and tests are traditionally …

Altruism: Should It Be Included As An Attribute Of Medical Professionalism?, Joanne Harris Feb 2018

Altruism: Should It Be Included As An Attribute Of Medical Professionalism?, Joanne Harris

Health Professions Education

Problem: Altruism is often included in classical and modern definitions of medical professionalism and some feel that medicine is a vocation where altruism is a pre-requisite. However since the 1970s there have been changes in society affecting the way all professions are viewed. Some high profile medical malpractice cases mean the public no longer perceives the medical profession as infallible. Following the Harold Shipman case, medical educators began to argue that retaining the concept of altruism did a disservice to the medical profession where “it is the claim of altruism that allows the medical profession to claim moral superiority”. 1 …

The Limited Use Of Self-Reports In Educational Research, Henk G. Schmidt Sep 2017

The Limited Use Of Self-Reports In Educational Research, Henk G. Schmidt

Health Professions Education

As an editor, I receive many papers for this journal in which the research is based on self-report. Often these studies are purely descriptive. Authors have measured one characteristic of a group of students– e.g., these students’ self-efficacy, or anxiety–and report on the results. Such one-shot studies are largely unpublishable because they lack context. Is the selfefficacy of the studied group to be considered high, medium, or low? And why? What causes the anxiety among the students? Answers on these questions are mostly missing and leave the reader dissatisfied.

Health Professions Education

Concerns have been periodically raised about care that lacks compassion in health care settings. The resulting demands for an increase in consistent compassionate care for patients have frequently failed to acknowledge the potentially detrimental implications for health care professionals including compassion fatigue and a failure to care for oneself. This communication suggests how mindfulness and self-compassion may advance means of supporting those who care for a living and extends the call for greater compassion to include people working within a contemporary health care setting in the United Kingdom. The potential benefits for both health professionals and patients is implied, and …

The Arrival Of Neuroscience To Diagnostic Reasoning: Four Issues To Keep In Mind, Jerome I. Rotgans, Lucy V. Rosby, Naomi Low-Beer

Health Professions Education

With the rapidly increasing access to brain imaging facilities, we are potentially at the dawn of a new era for understanding diagnostic reasoning. Although, this may sound bold, and appears to echo the many claims made in other disciplines, we will highlight in this paper why neuroscience can be a useful tool for advancing diagnostic reasoning research. But first some cautionary notes. Fact is that all too often the high expectations of neuroscience are not met, such as the expectation in “educational neuroscience” that the insights of the brain will transform classroom teaching and learning.1 There is currently no compelling …

Reflection In Medical Diagnosis: A Literature Review, Silvia Mamede, Henk G. Schmidt

Health Professions Education

Purpose: Reflection in medical diagnosis has been said to prevent errors by minimizing flaws in clinical reasoning. This claim, however, has been much disputed. While some studies show reflective reasoning to improve diagnostic performance, others find it to add nothing. This paper presents a narrative review of the literature on reflection in medical diagnosis aimed at addressing two questions: (1) how reflective reasoning has been conceived in this literature; and (2) what is the effect of different forms of reflective reasoning on diagnostic performance. Method: We searched PubMed and Web of Science for papers published until June 2016 and identified …
