Investigating Person-Specific Profiles Of Readiness-To-Exercise: Exploring Associations With Hypothetical Experiential Outcomes And Perceived Relevance, Cory Beaumont
Doctoral Dissertations
Autoregulation is a person-adaptive strategy wherein exercise workloads are adjusted to match one’s readiness (e.g., acute mental, physical, perceptual state). Prior work demonstrated that structural features of readiness profiles (i.e., which factor(s) are most important) differ across individuals. As this work relied on mathematical modeling, research is needed to understand the informational utility of person-specific profiles (PSPs) of readiness. Purpose: Model heterogeneity in PSPs of readiness (Aim 1), explore associations between PSP factor scores and forecasted experiences to hypothetical muscle-strengthening exercise (Aim 2), and explore participants’ perceptions of relevance and utility regarding their PSP (Aim 3). Methods: For …
“In The Skin I’M In…I Represent A Different Version Of What Help Looks Like:” Black Women Sport Psychology Professional’S Experiences In Applied Sport Psychology, Sharon R. Couch
Doctoral Dissertations
Black Feminist Applied Sport Psychology (BFASP) is a culturally inclusive theoretical framework for centering Black women’s experiences in applied sport psychology (Carter et al., 2020; Couch et al., 2022). For the past two decades, (White) Feminist applied sport psychology professionals (FASPPs) described the experiences of Black women as unique but were overlooked in research and participant pools due to the prioritization of White women's and Black male sport experiences. (Carter & Davila, 2017; Carter & Prewitt-White, 2014; Gill, 2020; Hyman et al., 2021). The purpose of this study was to explore the life and work experiences of BASPPs (i.e., faculty, …
“If I’Ve Got God On My Side, I Can Do It”: A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Lived Experiences Of Spirituality For Lds Ncaa Di Student-Athletes, Matthew J. Moore
“If I’Ve Got God On My Side, I Can Do It”: A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Lived Experiences Of Spirituality For Lds Ncaa Di Student-Athletes, Matthew J. Moore
Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of spirituality for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) student-athletes who also identified as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Using an existential phenomenological approach (Thomas & Pollio, 2002), nine interviews were conducted with four self-identified female and five self-identified male members of the LDS Church who were current NCAA DI athletes at the time of the study; they participated in four different DI sports (cross-country/track and field, football, soccer, and volleyball) and attended five different DI institutions. Their mean age was …
Self-Control Effect During A Reduction Of Feedback Availability, Aaron Dean Von Lindern
Self-Control Effect During A Reduction Of Feedback Availability, Aaron Dean Von Lindern
Doctoral Dissertations
A growing body of recent research has pointed to the potential value of allowing learners to have some autonomy in shaping their learning environment. Studies of this so-called self-control effect have demonstrated that allowing learners to control some aspect of the instructional setting facilitates motor learning compared to conditions that are controlled externally. The purpose of the present study is to examine how learners ostensibly provided self-control over feedback behave when the actual availability of feedback is constrained by a predetermined schedule of coach availability to provide feedback. Furthermore, an investigation into potential underlying mechanisms will be examined through a …
Sleep Habits Of High School Students: An Intervention To Improve Them, John Edward Wallace
Sleep Habits Of High School Students: An Intervention To Improve Them, John Edward Wallace
Doctoral Dissertations
Adolescence is a time of tremendous growth: physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Many experts state that good sleep habits are very important for adolescents and emotional well-being. The few studies of adolescents' sleep habits have reported that many high school-age students sleep less than eight hours when their bodies actually need nine hours a night. Research has found a relationship between shortened sleep duration and chaotic sleep patterns to overall poor school performance.
Sleep problems among adolescents have been found to be associated with anxiety, depression, inattentive behavior, social problems, aggressive behavior, and delinquency. Additional studies indicate that adolescents who …
The Effects Of Asymmetric Directional Microphone Fittings On Acceptance Of Background Noise, Jong Sik Kim
The Effects Of Asymmetric Directional Microphone Fittings On Acceptance Of Background Noise, Jong Sik Kim
Doctoral Dissertations
The present study investigated the effects of asymmetric directional microphone fittings (i.e., an omnidirectional microphone on one ear and a directional microphone on the other) on speech understanding in noise and acceptance of background noise in 15 full-time hearing aid users. Subjects were fitted binaurally with four directional microphone conditions (i.e., binaural omnidirectional, asymmetric right directional, asymmetric left directional and binaural directional microphones) using Siemens Intuis directional behind-the-ear hearing aids and comply earmolds. The results revealed that speech understanding in noise improved when using asymmetric directional microphones compared to binaural omnidirectional microphone fittings and were not significantly hindered compared to …
Assessing The Hiv/Aids Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Of Representative Football Student-Athletes In The Southern Conference, Jamie N. Whited
Assessing The Hiv/Aids Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Of Representative Football Student-Athletes In The Southern Conference, Jamie N. Whited
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this investigation was to assess the current level of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to HIV infection and AIDS among representative freshmen and senior football student-athletes from institutions in the Southeastern Conference of the NCAA. The secondary purpose was to assess student-athletes' sport-specific attitudes and knowledge source related to HIV infections and AIDS.
Based on the literature review and input from professionals in the field of sports medicine and AIDS education, a survey instrument was selected. The instrument was divided into six parts. The first part, Modified DiClemente AIDS Knowledge Survey, was a true-and-false scale (31 …
Life-Cycle Cost Effectiveness And Safety Evaluation Involving Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation Vehicles, Curtis Lee Sturgill
Life-Cycle Cost Effectiveness And Safety Evaluation Involving Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation Vehicles, Curtis Lee Sturgill
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the life-cycle effectiveness and safety factors involved in operating Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) motor vehicles from zero miles through life-cycle. The major concerns were to provide a balance of economic and safety factors for determining when vehicles should be replaced.
The data were collected from TBI files, Department of Transportation (DOT) records, and the National Automobile Dealers Associations Guide (NADA).
The analysis consisted of entering the data into a computer where they were cross tabulated to determine the correlation between operational costs and mileage.
The major findings of the …
