The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
Shared Knowledge Conference
Based on a review of research and best practices in mental health awareness and skills, this inquiry project argues for state legislative policies that would require mental health awareness and skills in the K-12 curriculum. Mental health affects individual accomplishments in every stage of people’s lives beginning in early childhood and throughout the life cycle. Prevention and treatment of mental illness plays a key role in the ability of an individual to cope with loss and develop resiliency and perseverance in challenging times and to make better decisions that improve the individual’s life and the lives of those around them. …

The Intersection Of Mental Health Literacy And Mental Health Stigma: A Literature Review
The Intersection Of Mental Health Literacy And Mental Health Stigma: A Literature Review
Symposium of Student Scholars
BACKGROUND: Any discussion of health should involve a discussion of health literacy, as it is a critical factor in the acquisition and application of health-related information. One specific area is mental health literacy (MHL), which refers to knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders.
MHL has experienced improvement in the areas of recognition, management, and prevention; however, current efforts for MHL development and improvement have a one-sided focus. MHL efforts do not address the issue of stigma in terms of reduction or awareness setting the stage for the current research.
METHODS: A review of the literature explored the intersection of MHL …

Little Milligan Elementary School in rural Carter County, Tennessee was provided with health literacy resources in the form of health education Go-Packs––easily implementable lessons contained in a small storage tote––as part of the community project requirement of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine Rural Primary Care Track Curriculum. These Go-Packs included detailed lesson plans and accompanying materials that were designed to facilitate health education in the classrooms by providing easily deployable lessons for the teachers to utilize. Four Go-Packs were provided for hygiene, oral health, tobacco use, and nutrition that teachers used to augment instruction during teachable moments that …
Social Media's Influence On Adolescent Identity, Kerri Doble
Social Media's Influence On Adolescent Identity, Kerri Doble
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
The fact that social media plays a prominent role in many lives today led me to ask the question: how does digital stress from social media use influence adolescent relationships? This research question was formulated out of concern that the shifting norms related to social media use may impact identity formation and a teens search for belonging, potentially stalling development. Taking the perspective that if we lead by example, we will help them lead, my aim is to share information with adults involved in the lives of teens to promote the modeling of healthy social media behavior. My creation of …

The Effects Of Optic Flow On Locomotor Symmetry, Lauren Bowman
The Effects Of Optic Flow On Locomotor Symmetry, Lauren Bowman
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Walking seems to be an undemanding task; however, it requires a complex ability to adapt to changing environments. Our body relies on feedback from several sensory systems: visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular. When these systems conflict, the body relies primarily on visual feedback. Asymmetrical walking patterns, in both the spatial (i.e. step length) and temporal (i.e. step time) components may result from aging and disease. Learning how vision contributes to adapting to an asymmetrical walking pattern may prove useful in rehabilitating patients with asymmetric walking patterns. Twenty healthy, young adults participated in this study and were separated into two groups, virtual …
Effects Of Hypobaric And Normobaric Hypoxia On Myogenic And Proteolytic Gene Expression In Humans, Caleb I. Ross
Effects Of Hypobaric And Normobaric Hypoxia On Myogenic And Proteolytic Gene Expression In Humans, Caleb I. Ross
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Current research suggests that physiological responses to hypobaric and normobaric hypoxia may be different. It is unknown if these differences extend to skeletal muscle and the transcriptional responses regulating muscle mass. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of hypobaric and normobaric hypoxia on myogenenic and proteolytic gene expression. METHODS: Recreationally trained subjects (n = 15; age = 24 ± 4 y; VO2max = 3.60 ± 0.83 L · min-1) completed three trials of 60-min cycling at 70% of Wmax followed by 4-h recovery at ambient conditions (975 m), hypobaric hypoxia (4,420 m), and normobaric hypoxia (4,420 m). …
Photovoice Of Obesity On Murray State University's Campus, Karley Wray, Melissa Godby
Photovoice Of Obesity On Murray State University's Campus, Karley Wray, Melissa Godby
Scholars Week
The issue we decided to discuss on campus using Photovoice was obesity. Obesity is becoming a very big topic that we all need to start focusing on. Obesity is defined as having a BMI at or above 30. This is becoming more common with our cultural change. We are becoming more fast food eaters and are not exercising as much as we should. It is even getting worse on college campuses. We all knew of what was called the freshmen 15, but now it is becoming a four year 15. It is becoming more common for college students to become …
The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy
The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy
Scholars Week
Hand washing is when you wet your hands under warm water, add soap and rub hands together for 20 seconds or longer, rinse, dry with paper towel, and finally turn off running water with that paper towel you just dried your hands off with. Hand washing is something that helps prevent the spread of germs that lead to illness. This is a health problem that could anywhere and everywhere in the community, but I specifically looked into the Paducah-Murray regional campus.
Photovoice is a process where members of a community take pictures that give some insight on what they believe …
Motor Development And Skill Acquisition In Elementary Aged Students, Joanna M. Guerrant Ms.
Motor Development And Skill Acquisition In Elementary Aged Students, Joanna M. Guerrant Ms.
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Mastering physical movement occurs through motor learning and experience. Motor development is needed for successful acquisition of sport and other physical skills. A lack of motor skills has been associated with decreased physical activity later in life, which has been linked to a variety of hypokinetic diseases. This study examined motor learning and skill acquisition in elementary age children. Twenty 2nd-5th grade students were recruited through the local school system. Subjects did not have any injuries that would preclude them from performing three basic skills (modified squat, tree, and arm and leg raises). IRB approval, parental consent, …
Social Marketing Campaign For The National Eating Disorder Awareness Week Among Utah State University Students, Kelsey Despain, Maya Miyairi
Social Marketing Campaign For The National Eating Disorder Awareness Week Among Utah State University Students, Kelsey Despain, Maya Miyairi
Student Research Symposium
As one of the Healthy Campus 2020 initiatives, college campuses nationwide are encouraged to focus on reducing the proportion of students who report experiencing an eating disorder/problem within the last 12 months from 5.3% to 4.8% (American College Health Association, 2015). In a survey of 639 Utah State University (USU) students, 0.6% of respondents reported an eating disorder/problem having a negative impact on their academic performance (American College Health Association, 2015). Although this data is less alarming to our institution, we still have significant concerns about students’ body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors such as extreme dieting and over exercise. …

Aliem Air-Pro Series: Identifying Quality Content From Blogs And Podcasts For The Senior Emergency Medicine Resident, Fareen Zaver, Michelle Lin
GW Research Days 2016 - 2020
Introduction: In 2008, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education endorsed a change such that EM residency programs can now decrease their synchronous conference experiences by up to 20% in exchange for asynchronous learning termed Individualized Interactive Instruction (III). Identifying quality online resources that would also fulfill III’s reporting criteria (program director monitoring, evaluation component, faculty oversight, program effectiveness) is challenging.
Using crowdsourced expertise, the Approved Instructional Resources (AIR) series from Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) was created in 2014 to provide a credible method to identify quality educational blogs and podcasts. The identified resources, however, focused on …
