Quicksand Craft Center: Documentation & Analysis Of A Handweaving Program In Vest, Kentucky, Deborah Champion

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Data on the handweaving program at the Quicksand Craft Center in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky were compiled and analyzed. Four areas--history of the craft program, business organization and financial structure, weave patterns of goods woven and sold by the craft center, and weavers employed in the program --were examined to assess the success of the program in the local community. Factors in the four areas examined contributed to the success of the program. The benevolence, perseverance, and co-operation of the founders, directors and community members involved with the craft center have been largely responsible for the continued success …

Adult women are enrolling in colleges at a growing rate. From the mid-1960's to the mid-1970's higher education institutions experienced an increase in students due primarily to a rapid increase in the traditional college-age population. After several years of narrow fluctuation, enrollment figures began to rise again as a result of increased participation of older adults, especially women (The Condition of Education, 1985).

Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed. One dressmaker, Mrs. A. H. Taylor of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was studied in order to draw attention to the role of the dressmaker in American fashion. A biography of Mrs. A. H. Taylor and the business history were compiled; available designs were analyzed in relation to current fashion; and an investigation of the business organization was made. It was found that the dressmaking establishment played an important role in the lives of women of that time period. Fashionable custom fit clothing was made available to local residents and to mail-order customers. The establishment was one of the few businesses which …

The study was designed to determine the problems that low and middle socioeconomic status families have in clothing their elementary school-age children. Comparisons were made of the consumer buying attitudes and practices of mothers of elementary school-age children from middle-and low-socioeconomic status families in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Differences between the groups were measured on a 92- item Likert scale questionnaire on the variables-planned buying, appropriateness, conformity, labeling, faulty merchandise, care, serviceability, comfort, and versatility. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences. The middle socioeconomic group indicated a more knowledgeable attitude on all the scales. Data from personal …

The collection pertains to Dr. Powell’s work as a Winthrop faculty member, scholar and specialist in family and child development and her involvement with such organizations as the Christian Children’s Fund and the Southeastern Council on Family Relations. The birth rate in the United States has been declining over the past years from a peak reached in 1957. It is apparent that during the past twenty years increasing numbers of couples have made decisions to limit family size; moreover, the decisions could be easily and effectively implemented with use of modern contraceptive methods. Tubal ligations and vasecetomy have further served to implement decisions to end fertility permanently for millions of couples. In recent years, legal abortion has extended the decision period beyond the point of conception.
