A major goal in nutrition education is to promote adequate nourishment throughout the entire populace. Frequently, teenagers are identified as a population subgroup with poor dietary habits. Adolescents tend to skip meals, snack excessively, adopt poor dietary patterns, and, in general, have chosen rather carefree attitudes toward nutrition. Medical science asserts that the benefits of proper eating habits, established early in life, have influenced the ability to: concentrate, think on a higher plane, enjoy physical well being, and maintain good health. The Development Of An Assessment Form To Screen Preschool Children For Nutritional Referral, Donna Bond Phillips

The Ten State Nutrition Survey (1968-1972) included West Virginia as a participant and provided data on the nutritional status of various age groups including preschool children. Information from biochemical tests, anthropometric measurements and a 24-hour dietary recall indicated that a significant number of children in West Virginia and the United States are malnourished or at nutritional risk. For this reason it is essential that nutritional evaluation of children be carried out during physical examinations. However, it may not be necessary for the evaluation to be completed by a nutritionist.
