Digital tools are crucial in modern education for improving teaching practices and student engagement. While technology enhances learning, many teacher candidates still struggle to effectively integrate it into their teaching (Habibi et al., 2023). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to disclose the writing challenges faced by students in Grades 5–8 who have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and writing strategies that can be helpful for these specific students. Six students were recruited as participants within a school district located in a suburban area in the Northeast region of the United States. In this phenomenological qualitative study, I explored how school-building leaders’ perspectives, experiences, and knowledge impact the implementation and sustainability of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in Northeastern U.S. schools. I conducted semistructured interviews with 10 elementary- and middle-school-building leaders to gain insights into their lived experiences and leadership practices related to SEL. Grounded in distributed-leadership theory (DLT), which emphasizes shared leadership, study results showed that all participants viewed SEL as essential to students’ well-being and academic success. However, leaders reported inconsistent implementation across classrooms and schools, accompanied by limited district support. Although schools promoted SEL in theory, participants noted a lack …

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect approximately 1 in 4 children in the United States, often resulting in behavioral and developmental challenges within school settings. This qualitative case study applied Thomas et al.’s (2019) trauma-informed framework to examine the extent to which 15 Title I elementary teachers in a rural West Virginia district implemented evidence-based practices to address trauma-related behaviors. Using semi-structured virtual interviews and a peer-reviewed protocol, data were thematically analyzed across key domains including trauma screening, interdisciplinary collaboration, positive behavior intervention systems (PBIS), cognitive-behavioral strategies, restorative practices, multitiered systems of support (MTSS), social emotional learning (SEL), and family engagement. …

Inquiry-based science instruction fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific literacy by engaging students in exploration, questioning, and reflective learning. However, implementing inquiry-based practices presents significant challenges for elementary teachers, who often balance multiple subjects and may feel less confident facilitating open-ended investigations. This study examines how school-based coaching and professional learning communities (PLCs) support teachers in adopting inquiry-based science instruction. In the mid-2020s, Structured Literacy has become a central focus in education policy, pre-service teacher preparation, professional development, and curricular design. While Structured Literacy offers a strong foundation for early literacy, it does not fully capture a holistic view of literacy.

These changes have directly impacted teachers. This qualitative study explored K-1 teachers’ experiences with curriculum change in one school located in the northeastern United States. There were ten participants in the study including kindergarten teachers, first-grade teachers, a special education teacher, an English language development teacher, and a guidance counselor. Students Obtaining Tools to Achieve Regulation (SOAR) is a doctoral capstone project that addressed the need for integrated social emotional learning (SEL) in elementary education. SEL is an evidence-based approach shown to improve academic outcomes, behavior, and long-term life success, yet implementation barriers remain in school settings. The Foundational Numeracy Transformation Cycle (FNTC) was created in part to increase the percentage of students with disabilities performing at or above grade level in middle school mathematics. Through professional development and support, the FNTC worked within regional co-ops to increase math proficiency at all grade levels by building instructional capacity in primary educators. In addition to increasing student proficiency, the FNTC also aimed to enhance educator confidence in implementing Mathematical Teaching Practice (MTP) #2. This thesis examines the strengths that Afghan students and their families bring to U.S. schools and how these strengths are often overlooked. Drawing on my experience as an Afghan immigrant, math teacher, and bilingual instructional aide, I explore how Afghan students, parents, and teachers describe these cultural, linguistic, and relational assets that shape students’ learning and sense of belonging. I use the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Funds of Knowledge (FoK) as guiding frameworks to understand the aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital present in participants’ experiences (Moll et al., 1992; Yosso, 2005).
