Teacher Factors That Influence Student Achievement: A Study Of Third And Fifth Grade Teachers, Jewelle L. Harmon

Student achievement is of the highest concern for the government, educational administrators and parents. Researchers have looked at several possible student factors that affect student achievement. However, very little research has been done on teacher factors and their relationship with student achievement. The current study looked at the relationships among teacher absence, teacher job satisfaction, work-family conflict, family/work conflict, teachers' attitudes towards achievement measures, and their correlation with Virginia's standardized measure of student achievement; the Standards of Learning (SOLs). District differences in student achievement were also examined. Three school districts in southeastern Virginia accepted the invitation to participate. …

This study researched the effects of Breakthrough to Literacy (1998), a phonological awareness computer-based program, on elementary school students in grades kindergarten through three. The treatment group received the Breakthrough to Literacy program in kindergarten. The control group received the traditional curriculum without this program. The students were assessed on phonological awareness skills at the end of kindergarten, the fall and spring of grade one and grade two. Their reading comprehension skills were also assessed at the end of grade 3. This exploratory case study examines the perceptions of parents, teachers, students and principals on eight factors of school effectiveness. Two low income elementary schools in the City of Norfolk, Virginia served as the research setting for this study. Though both schools consist almost entirely of African American students, and are otherwise similar in demographics, they have achieved at different levels. While one has been recognized as a national model, based on continuous improvement in students' academic achievement, the other has not attained the same level of achievement, based on standardized test scores.

To achieve these purposes, data were collected by using the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills Multilevel Battery (ITBS) of general education students and students with at-risk profiles, Kaufman Tests of Educational Achievement (KTEA) of students with disabilities, completed Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives of students with disabilities, report card grades of all students, and referrals to principal for inappropriate behavior of all students. This study examined the correlation of four measures of upper body strength (traditional pull-up, modified pull-up, flexed-arm hang, and push-ups), currently being used in physical fitness test batteries, as well as a grip strength test. Seventy-one male (mean ± SD: age 10.6 years ± 6.9 months) and 68 female (age 10.6 years ± 7.6 months) subjects enrolled in the fourth or fifth grade participated in the study. The sample population for this research was drawn from four randomly assigned first grade classes attending an elementary school with urban characteristics. The objective of this research was to complete an experimental study which would investigate the nature of the relationship between readiness and achievement. Data collection included two components: scores from the Metropolitan Readiness Test (MRT), administered at the kindergarten level; and scores from the Science Research Associates (SRA) Achievement Series, administered to the same 284 subjects at the fourth grade level. Correlation coefficients between these two tests were determined for all subtests, total tests, composites, and the Educational Ability Series. A comparison between publishers suggested grade levels and readability grade levels derived by the Dale­ Chall readability formula were investigated. In a junior high school social studies class of 104 students, cloze tests of comprehensibility were administered and a comparison was made with the readability grade levels of the text­ books, The results demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the publishers' suggested grade levels and those grade levels derived by the readability formula. There was also a significant difference between the grade levels and the results of the cloze tests. These findings seemed to indicate that publishers need …
