Limited information is available, however, to aid in developing and carrying out a program of internship experiences as one phase of administrative requirements. The purpose of this study was to develop a handbook for elementary principal internship in the state of Washington.

This study had the twofold purpose of (l) gaining an overall picture of phonetic analysis skills (at the primary level) of two series of basic readers, and (2) learning where and what phonetic analysis skills are presented at the various levels of each series. The Scott, Foresman and Ginn readers were selected for the comparison as they are the basic and readers were selected for the comparison as they are the basic and co-basic readers, respectively, in the school district of the writer.

When the standards for the education of teachers and for initial certification are raised to this level, the standards of school service will automatically reach an appropriate level. It is hoped that the public (parents) will soon rise up and demand this degree of professional respectability of the teachers of their children.

The new elementary school of the Central Washington College of Education, at Ellensburg, which was completed in September, 1939, is a foremost example of the new type of structure which is replacing the old and inadequate formal training school. It was designed to house a modern and functional elementary school and to be an integral part of a progressive teacher-education program. The curriculum is based upon contemporary life and individual student needs. It provides facilities for enabling teachers in training to secure the necessary experiences essential to the administration of the modern elementary school.
