Having taught students Language Arts from 2nd grade through sophomore year of high school, I have encountered numerous samples of handwriting, with great variance in their legibility. It has caused me frustration as a beginning teacher trying to decipher what has actually been written and just what the student was trying to convey to myself, as their teacher. In some cases I have graded a spelling test, marked words incorrect because I could not read the letters in the word. Using Guided Reading To Improve Reading Achievement, Julie W. Ross

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of guided reading on the reading achievement and growth of third grade students. The hypothesis was that students (n = 12) would achieve at greater levels with a guided reading curriculum than a control group using a traditional basal reading curriculum (n = 15). The instrument used to test achievement was the 2005 Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The students' results were compared using the 2004 Georgia CRCT results as a pretest. Many states and school districts are using federal funds to hire instructional coaches to provide quality professional development for teachers. These instructional coaches provide on-site, on-going support for teachers. This study inquired into about teachers' perceptions of instructional coaches, both positive and negative. A survey was given to 52 teachers from four elementary schools that have had a coach for the past few years. The results indicated that 97% of the teachers who have been coached perceived the experience as beneficial and would choose to be coached again in the future. The professional literature on the configuration of flexible reading groups for reading instrnction in a regular first grade classroom was examined to determine if flexible grouping yields any benefit to students who have been assessed to be below grade level in reading. The research showed support for the idea that flexible, fluid grouping is an accelerant to producing higher levels of reading improvement. As a result, an instructional handbook was created to aid educators in the implementation of flexible reading group instruction.

This study examines how elementary school teachers learned to teach mathematics during their pre-service education and during their first few years of teaching. The study identifies those experiences teachers found to be most significant in their development as mathematics teachers. All seven teachers in this study had been taught using procedural methods and each had to find a way to integrate conceptual mathematics education into their own understanding. The study examines the teachers' motivations for pursuing this understanding and the circumstances that provided opportunities to do so.

Guided by the central question "How do professional development opportunities regarding the use of running records effect the thinking and practice of veteran teachers ?", this study investigated the way in which eight highly experienced literacy teachers learned to use formative assessment to guide instruction of a student at risk of failure in reading. From the most veteran teacher with thirty-three years to the "baby" with fifteen years of service to children, they represented a seasoned group of early childhood professionals willing to grapple with formative assessment, a concept for which all admitted they had been ill-prepared. There are basic fears among many on how to teach art to special education children. Some art teachers decline a school assignment after finding out they would have an adaptive class with cognitively disabled (CD) or hearing impaired (HI) students. This study describes first-grade teachers beliefs and practices about reading instruction. Drawing from interview and observational data, 16 teachers from four districts were placed on a continuum from skills-based to literature-based in relationship to their use of the basal. Only 2 teachers were found to rely solely on the basal, while 3 teachers enhanced the basal with literature, and 4 teachers used only literature in their reading instruction. Six teachers enhanced their basal use with additional skills and 1 teacher relied on skills only in her reading instruction. Kitty Stone, wife of JSU President Emeritus Ernest Stone, was a longtime educator who worked to improve standards in the Jacksonville School System and the State of Alabama. She began her career in Jacksonville in the 1940s as a first grade teacher at what was then known as Jacksonville Elementary Laboratory School, which was an extension of Jacksonville State Teachers College. Stone went on to serve as director of the laboratory school and JSTC's student teacher program, and later principal of the school until her retirement on 30 September 1971. Job Sharing Among Elementary School Teachers, Denise Ione Walsh

The practice of job sharing, in which two teachers share the responsibilities of one teacher, is described. A comprehensive review of related literature is presented. Perceptions of those directly affected by the practice in one school district were gathered through 70 structured interviews with elementary principals, job sharing teachers, full-time teacher colleagues, students in job sharing classrooms, and parents. The study reveals predominantly positive reactions to the practice, and supports continuation of job sharing as an employment option for teachers.

The purpose of this field study was to develop a school effectiveness model which may be implemented at Washington Elementary School in Centralia, Illinois. In 1980 this researcher was named principal at Washington Elementary School. At the same time Centralia City Schools were entering a desegregation program which included bussing. For the first time there were more than three minority students at Washington Elementary School. More than half the students at the school are from economically disadvantaged families and achievement had been low for many years. Thus, this study was deemed timely and relevant.
