Masuchika Boldt argues that gender is ever-present in the classroom and children are constantly making assertions about the meaning of gender and the authenticity of their own and others’ gender performances. The Impact Of Somatic Movement On Academic And Behavioral Performance In The Fourth-Grade Classroom, Sara Collson

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact that somatic movement had on the academic and behavioral performance of elementary students. 21 participants were chosen, with permission, from a designated fourth-grade classroom to participate in the applied treatment—somatic movement. This included stretching, balancing, and low intensity movements. The method of this study was to incorporate somatic movement exercises for approximately five minutes prior to language arts class. The results collected from the study showed that applying the somatic movement exercises in the classroom improved students’ engagement, focus, and productivity for an immediate and short amount of time.

This series of activities invites students to explore animals and their habitats, classify “animal” figures by habitat, sort, represent, and analyze data. In the first activity, the picture book Listen to Our World by Bill Martin, Jr. and Michael Sampson will be used to discuss eleven different animals and their habitats. Questioning strategies will focus on student comprehension and inferential reasoning skills related to why each animal lives in a particular type of habitat. This book is utilized at all grade levels to introduce the subsequent activity.

However, what independent reading looks like, teacher expectations related to it, and student attitudes toward it differ greatly depending on the individual classroom. Increasing demands on teachers to improve student achievement has resulted in more time spent in teacher-directed instruction and teacher-selected text, and less time for students to read self-selected, engaging text, resulting in lack of interest and purpose for reading (Gran & DeVoogd, 2008). It approaches the question of sequencing social and emotional competencies for instruction through experiential learning. This paper presents a case study drawn from design-based research (DBR) on a mobile, place-based augmented reality history game. Using DBR methods, the game was developed by the author as a history learning intervention for fifth to seventh graders. The game is built upon historical narratives of disenfranchised populations that are seldom taught, those typically relegated to the 'null curriculum'. These narratives include the stories of women immigrant labour leaders in the early twentieth century, more than a decade before suffrage. Analyzing LGBTQ-inclusive children’s literature and teaching practices in the elementary classroom, the author outlines a vision for a queer literacy pedagogy. The article begins with a description of four different sexual diversity frameworks: homophobia/heterosexism, tolerance/visibility, social justice, and queer. It includes an exploration of children’s literature and teaching practices that exemplify each framework, making explicit the connections between theory and practice. It then expands on the theories, principles, and practices composing queer literacy pedagogy. The article will be of particular interest to teacher educators and elementary classroom teachers, though the frameworks are equally applicable to all levels and settings.

Academic Achievement Of 6th Grade Students In A Social Studies Classroom Implementing Traditional Vs Project-Based Learning, Keith Bryan Overholt

This study compared students taught with traditional teaching methods and those with project-based learning methods in a sixth-grade social studies classroom. Student assessments were examined to determine how students scored on lower-level thinking questions and higher-level thinking questions as defined by Bloom’s taxonomy of learning. Results indicated that students who were taught through traditional methods scored significantly higher on lower-level thinking questions than those taught through project-based learning. Conversely, students taught through project-based learning scored significantly higher on higher-level thinking questions than those taught through traditional methods.

The purpose of this project is to teach students about multiracial identity issues. Multiracial populations in the U.S. continue to grow and it’s important for educators to address the needs of these students. A 5-E multiracial literature lesson plan was created for second grade that incorporates KWL and Text-to-World teaching strategies. A second grade class were read two children’s picture books, each featuring a biracial protagonist, and were asked to discuss and evaluate the content and commonalities of these stories. Why “Correcting” African American Language Speakers Is Counterproductive, Alice Lee

In this article, I address the topic of AAL usage in the classroom, particularly the line of thinking that assumes “correcting” the language is what will “set students up for success” in the future. By providing some abbreviated information on how children acquire language, I explain how AAL “correction” is actually counterproductive for student “success”—in both language acquisition and learning. Additionally, I will offer practical suggestions for how AAL can be incorporated in curriculum and instruction.
