Constructivism Made Easy Using The Consider, Construct, Confirm Learning Cycle, Timothy E. Goodwin Ed.D
Essays in Education
Shifting from didactic, teacher-led instruction to a student-centered, constructivist classroom is often a daunting task for teachers. The Consider, Construct, Confirm Learning cycle is a framework for teachers to organize their planning—be it individual lessons, units of study, or whole courses. The CCC Learning Cycle framework shifts the format of a typical lesson from didactic instruction leading to short-term renting of knowledge through memorization, to student-centered, lived experiences resulting in students owning their new knowledge.

Literacy Warriors: Engaging Our Community In The Fight For Literacy, Monica Rene Manns, Diane Saunders
Virginia English Journal
The Literacy Warriors initiative is designed to address the pervasive issue of illiteracy in underserved communities through innovative, community-driven strategies. Rooted in the evidence-based methodologies of Marva Collins and Orton-Gillingham, the program equips community members—referred to as Literacy Warriors—with the skills to teach foundational literacy, including phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Recognizing literacy as a tool for equity, empowerment, and social justice, this initiative emphasizes culturally affirming practices that resonate with the lived experiences of Black and marginalized students. The program also addresses a critical gap: many Literacy Warriors themselves were not taught phonics due to past whole-language initiatives, which …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The work conducted in this research builds on the work of many who have also worked to provide a platform to illuminate the voices of Black folks, especially Black boys. This research is not the first to make the case that Black boys are as fully human as anyone else, and yet they have internalized the white gaze, even as they are proud of their blackness, their color, their race, their culture. However, there exists limited research with Black boys in elementary school, particularly before the 5th grade (before 10 years of age).
This project was about freedom dreaming—a collective …

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Providing students with opportunities to connect has never been more critical, especially in today’s increasingly isolated and divided society. By incorporating community-building circles into the regular classroom routine, educators can positively impact various aspects of students’ experiences in school. Not only does circle practice nurture students’ sense of belonging in the educational community and help them sharpen interpersonal skills, but it also prepares young learners for life beyond school, setting them up for future success. Using principles from Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Martin Seligman’s well-being theory, and social-emotional learning theory, the researcher in this study examined the influence of community-building …
Exploring Elementary And Middle School Building Leaders’ Experiences, Perspectives, And Strategies In Implementing, Integrating, And Evaluating Social-Emotional Learning In Northeastern United States Schools, Muntaha Hussein
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
In this phenomenological qualitative study, I explored how school-building leaders’ perspectives, experiences, and knowledge impact the implementation and sustainability of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs in Northeastern U.S. schools. I conducted semistructured interviews with 10 elementary- and middle-school-building leaders to gain insights into their lived experiences and leadership practices related to SEL. Grounded in distributed-leadership theory (DLT), which emphasizes shared leadership, study results showed that all participants viewed SEL as essential to students’ well-being and academic success. However, leaders reported inconsistent implementation across classrooms and schools, accompanied by limited district support. Although schools promoted SEL in theory, participants noted a lack …

Literacy Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Instructional Choice Within A Structured Literacy Approach, Brianna Horst
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
In the United States over the past two centuries, differing views on reading instruction have fueled public and scientific debate. In the mid-2020s, Structured Literacy has become a central focus in education policy, pre-service teacher preparation, professional development, and curricular design. While Structured Literacy offers a strong foundation for early literacy, it does not fully capture a holistic view of literacy.
This mixed-method explanatory sequential design examined teachers’ stance on Structured Literacy, their instructional practices, and self-efficacy in literacy instruction. Participants included 30 survey respondents and 5 interviewees. Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory (1978, 1997) informed the analysis. Phase I involved …

Beyond The Bin: Transforming Relationships With Waste Through A Collaborative Inquiry-Based Environmental Education Curriculum, Kaylee V. Morris
Beyond The Bin: Transforming Relationships With Waste Through A Collaborative Inquiry-Based Environmental Education Curriculum, Kaylee V. Morris
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis presents Beyond the Bin, a collaborative inquiry-based environmental education curriculum designed to transform how young learners understand and interact with waste. Motivated by the limitations of current downstream waste education—focused primarily on consumer behavior and individual disposal practices—this project argues for an upstream approach that identifies the underlying cause of these prevalent systems of disposability. Grounded in environmental education theory, affective learning, and ecological literacy, the curriculum encourages students to rethink waste as a material with creative potential rather than something to discard. Through creative engagement, experiential learning, and community-based initiatives, the curriculum fosters collaboration between students, teachers, …
