This 2021 study focused on the relationship between not grading formative assessments and summative assessments. The focus was on whether students will do their formative assessments if they know they would not be graded. Furthermore, if they decided to complete or not complete their formative assessments, this study would show the effects on their summative scores. The study lasted for one chapter in their curriculum. The research took place in a North Dakota school, specifically 52 geometry students. Data showed that majority of students will not do their homework if not held accountable. The data also suggests that not grading …

This qualitative phenomenological study sought to explore the experiences of emergent bilingual refugee-background [1] students in Florida and their self-perceptions as bilingual learners. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with seven participants learning English both in-person and virtually in high school or adult education programs during the pandemic. The researchers completed content analysis individually and, in subsequent collaboration, identified patterns, and themes. Findings indicated that students took pride in their bilingual skills, demonstrated metalinguistic awareness, and were resilient and proactive learners with strong determination to succeed in the new country. This capstone project reports the interventions, progress, and results of five elementary students who were identified as ‘at-risk’ for preliteracy reading skill acquisition. The capstone discusses differentiated instructional strategies and the rotation of intervention strategies utilized to increase the preliteracy skills of the students. The capstone discusses the interventions implemented across four weeks between the collection of baseline and final data. This research finds that students at-risk for acquiring preliteracy skills can increase their preliteracy skills through differentiated instructional strategies.

This qualitative phenomenological research was designed to develop an understanding of caregivers’ understanding of early literacy expectations for their firstborn or only child as they begin their kindergarten schooling. This study consisted of seven participants and six interviews with caregivers that enrolled their children in the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Schools in Southeast, MI. With the findings of this study, school administrators and researchers alike may be able to find a deeper understanding in efforts to support their families as they begin their educational careers and establish a solid foundation for further growth and development.
