Co-Authorship Maps To Support Leadership Selection, Robert Hc Chen
Co-Authorship Maps To Support Leadership Selection, Robert Hc Chen
Research Analytics Summit 2024
VOSViewer co-authorship mapping is a powerful tool typically used for analyzing research collaboration. Users provide publication data and VOSViewer produces a map where authors are plotted on a 2-dimensional map based on how often they are in the author lists of the same publication.
In this presentation, I propose a series of tweaks to the input data that can leverage co-authorship maps to support leadership selection based on how often candidates co-author papers with their institutional peers and some of the attributes of these papers. I will suggest how best to interpret the resulting maps and address the major assumptions …
“Just Hold On, You Can Do This”: Conceptualizing Familial Support For First-Generation Undergraduate Students Of Color, Stephany Cuevas
“Just Hold On, You Can Do This”: Conceptualizing Familial Support For First-Generation Undergraduate Students Of Color, Stephany Cuevas
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study illustrates how parents, siblings, and extended family provide emotional, informative, instrumental, and appraisal supports to first-generation undergraduate students of color. Findings also suggest that families’ support is shaped by families’ understanding of the challenges first-generation college students face, their access to information about college and college life, and their consideration of students’ emerging adult developmental needs. Based on the experiences and perspectives of 12 family members, this study shows that families continue to be engaged in first-generation undergraduate students’ college education in essential ways, countering deficit perceptions of these populations, and providing new understandings of what family engagement …
The Relationship Between Internet Addiction Test Scores And Academic Achievement, Michael L. Houston, John Foubert
The Relationship Between Internet Addiction Test Scores And Academic Achievement, Michael L. Houston, John Foubert
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) score and academic performance in college students. The IAT measured the students’ addiction to the internet based upon their use. Academic performance was measured by grade point average (GPA). A sample of 692 traditional-aged college students from both public and private institutions was used to examine if IAT scores were related to and predictive of GPA. This study found a negative relationship between students’ IAT scores and GPAs. As IAT scores increased, students’ GPAs decreased. A better understanding of how internet addiction is related …
The Elephant In The Room: The Intersection Of Religion And Pornography Among Young Christian Men, Ryan Hewitt
The Elephant In The Room: The Intersection Of Religion And Pornography Among Young Christian Men, Ryan Hewitt
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Pornography presents a unique paradox for young Christians —a culturally normative phenomenon among younger generations, yet one that most Christians morally oppose. These conflicting trends make pornography an “elephant in the room” among young Christians today—an ever-present reality, yet one often not discussed due to its sensitive nature. This work presents a recent quantitative study exploring pornography use patterns and its impact on Evangelical Christian men from both Christian academic institutions and other social and religious contexts. Results revealed high levels of religiosity and porn use, and significant correlations between religiosity, porn use, potentially problematic use, and perceived problems due …

The Racial Attitudes Of White Students At A Christian Institution, Jarad Russell
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This phenomenological study used semi-structured interviews to understand the lived experiences and racial attitudes of White students at a Council for Christian Colleges and Universities institution as they related to Black people. The participants were asked about their past experiences with Black people, their discussions with family about race, their present understanding of terminology related to race and racism, and their desire to support racial justice in the future. Through this study, three categories of students emerged: those that had taken steps to educate themselves on matters related to race and racism, those that were just beginning to understand issues …
Revisiting Domestic And International Study "Abroad" Program Learning Outcomes: A Qualitative Pilot Study, Jessica Martin
Revisiting Domestic And International Study "Abroad" Program Learning Outcomes: A Qualitative Pilot Study, Jessica Martin
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Christian institutions missionally commit to educate students to be both professionally competent and capable of engaging across difference. This quantitative pilot study analyzes survey responses from graduates of two intentionally-designed Christian off-campus study programs—one located in the United States and one located abroad. A multivariate analysis of covariance reveals graduates of both programs scored comparably on professional competency and engaging difference scales. This challenges narrow approaches to researching, designing, and promoting international study abroad programs as superior arenas for developing global competency and domestic programs as primarily focused on professional development. Consequently, Christian educators are invited reconsider how various off-campus …

Sel Walkthroughs: Promoting Practices That Foster Social And Emotional Learning, Garrett Podgorski
Dissertations of Practice
The concept of social and emotional learning (SEL) has been around Illinois since the early 2000s and a part of legislation for schools to implement since 2003. This dissertation focuses on the extant data of 483 observations from the Municipal Nashville Public School (MNPS) SEL walkthrough tool, which was utilized to investigate SEL implementation in select Illinois schools. Data were collected in the South Cook County area of Illinois.
This dissertation provides a review of literature in the areas of SEL that should be taught in K-12 schools and provides an in-depth review of best practices for utilizing walkthrough observations …

The Complexities Of Disproportionality In A Large Urban School District: A Look Into District Interventions And Identification Processes, Linnie Tennile Tarrant
Dissertations of Practice
This study delves into the implementation of the multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and the special education identification process in a large urban school district in Illinois, with a specific focus on disproportionality in special education referrals. The district has been identified as disproportionate in categorizing African American students under the emotional disturbance (ED) category since 2014. Using a grounded theory approach, interviews were conducted with ten building-level administrators to investigate the consistency of MTSS implementation and the process of identifying students for special education services. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, and themes were analyzed using open, axial, and …
Research-Based English Language Arts (Ela) Instructional Practices: Characteristics Of Effective Ela Instructional Practices That Drive Student Achievement In Title I School Districts, Tequila Stamps
Dissertations of Practice
Children who attend and are educated in Title I School Districts often experience limited access to consistent research based and empirical English Language Arts (ELA) instruction. Consequently, such students are not adequately prepared for career and college readiness and typically underperform on standardized achievement tests. The purpose of this study is to explore the instructional strategies of middle school ELA teachers, who serve students at-risk of poor academic outcomes, yet support sustained student growth and achievement. It is to further identify a specific set of research-based strategies that foster student growth and achievement, particularly with students in Title I School …

Learning Through Play At School: Ukraine, 2019-2024, Rachel Parker, Amy Berry, Kellie Picker, David Jeffries, Prue Anderson, Oksana Zabolotna
Student learning processes
The Learning Through Play at School Research Study Ukraine was a four-year longitudinal intervention study funded by the LEGO Foundation and implemented by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA). The study was implemented between 2019 and 2024, during COVID-19 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces. Despite, at times, insurmountable challenges, the professional learning intervention was successful in supporting most teachers to progress from a surface level understanding of learning through play to a deep level. In addition, almost all children’s literacy and social-emotional skills grew significantly from start …
Edtech For Learning Outcomes And Impact: A Comprehensive Approach, Priyanka Sharma
Edtech For Learning Outcomes And Impact: A Comprehensive Approach, Priyanka Sharma
Student learning processes
A precise estimation of learners' abilities is the first and foremost step in personalized learning including EdTech solutions. Predictive analytic techniques such as Item Response Theory (IRT), Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT), and Performance Factor Analysis (PFA) are established practices to achieve this purpose. However, the complexity, cost, and time involved in calibration, and the challenges in online implementation, have led to the adoption of simpler alternatives such as Elo, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, the estimation of abilities is just one facet of personalized learning, and designing effective personalized learning experiences is equally essential to guide learners through their …

Conceptualizations Of Data Visualization Use Beyond Efficiency In Evaluation, Sarah Douville
Conceptualizations Of Data Visualization Use Beyond Efficiency In Evaluation, Sarah Douville
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Data visualization (data viz) is a valuable tool within evaluation for its ability to aid cognitive efficiency over text-based presentation of data (Card et. al., 1999; Evergreen, 2017, 2018; Few, 2012; Nussbaumer Knaflic, 2015; Tufte 2001). This exploratory multi-phase mixed methods research study considers purposes for using data viz in evaluation that can be achieved with that increased efficiency through the research question: “What conceptualizations of data viz use do program evaluators have beyond increased efficiency?”
In Phase I, secondary analysis of existing interview data with experts in both data viz and evaluation was used to better understand conceptualizations of …
Improving School Climate: The Impact Of A Perma-Based Intervention On Educators' Well-Being And Emotional Intelligence, Jennifer Andrews Kenney
Improving School Climate: The Impact Of A Perma-Based Intervention On Educators' Well-Being And Emotional Intelligence, Jennifer Andrews Kenney
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
Research has demonstrated that the condition of a school’s climate substantially influences student outcomes. This study investigated the factors influencing a sub-optimal school climate in a rural school. Results indicated that educators’ unmet social and emotional needs and an absence of well-being support influenced the quality of the school climate. To address this problem, this study examined the impact of an eight-week PERMA-based multicomponent positive psychology intervention (MPPI) on rural educators’ well-being, emotional intelligence (EI), and professional practice. The participants consisted of 13 rural educators. Using a convergent mixed methods research design, the researcher merged quantitative data comprising pre-test and …

Weaker MAP growth was also observed in STAAR tested grade levels, while students in K-1 exhibited statistically significant growth from fall to spring testing periods. Teacher …
Forward-Looking Academic Impact Rankings For U.S. Law Schools, Matthew Sag
Forward-Looking Academic Impact Rankings For U.S. Law Schools, Matthew Sag
Faculty Articles
Although the very concept of law school rankings is currently under fire, rankings abolitionism is misplaced. Given the number, diversity, and geographic dispersion of the more than 190 law schools fully accredited by the American Bar Association, rankings are essential to enable various stakeholders to make comparisons between schools. However, the current rankings landscape is dire. The U.S News law school rankings rely on poorly designed, highly subjective surveys to gauge "reputational strength," rather than looking to easily available, objective citation data that is more valid and reliable. Would-be usurpers of U.S. News use better data but make other arbitrary …
