Examining Mattering, Spiritual Mattering, And First-Year Retention At A Private, Religiously-Affiliated Institution Of Higher Education, Jason Morris, Alison A. Spencer, Avia Gray Jan 2016

Examining Mattering, Spiritual Mattering, And First-Year Retention At A Private, Religiously-Affiliated Institution Of Higher Education, Jason Morris, Alison A. Spencer, Avia Gray

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The primary purpose of this project was to explore how Schlossberg’s (1989) theory of college student’s mattering relates to college student retention in the context of a Christian institution of higher education. In addition, the authors created and tested a “spiritual mattering” measure based on Schlossberg’s theory. Mattering is a self-perception that refers to how important we believe we are to others. Schlossberg (1989) inserted this concept into the realm of higher education when she examined mattering and adult students returning to college. The purpose of the study was accomplished through the following three research objectives: a) Determining whether “institutional” …

Mediated-Efficacy: Hope For “Helpless” Writers, Eileen K. Camfield Jan 2016

Mediated-Efficacy: Hope For “Helpless” Writers, Eileen K. Camfield

University Writing Programs Staff Articles and Papers

Building on previous studies of college students' writing self-efficacy beliefs, this article presents the empirical foundation for a reconceptualized understanding of this identity process. The study assessed 131 college freshmen enrolled in a developmental writing course who were evaluated holistically using grounded theory methodology. The study identified (a) major theoretical categories revealing the nature of students' initial pessimism about themselves as writers and sense of learned helplessness and (b) a subsequent shift toward optimism and self-efficacy triggered by a particular learning relationship formed with their instructors, the core of the posited mediated-efficacy theory. Implications for college-level developmental writing pedagogy are …

A Systematic Review Of Studies Using Gettier-Type Thought Experiments, Maximilian Popiel Jan 2016

A Systematic Review Of Studies Using Gettier-Type Thought Experiments, Maximilian Popiel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experimental epistemologists have recently begun using Gettier-type thought experiments to test various philosophic theories. Generally speaking, these thought experiments present a justified, true belief which intuitively does not seem like knowledge. Despite the studies using this same general definition, they have exercised a myriad of different particular Gettier cases and experimental methods. Some results have been conflicting, or otherwise counter-intuitive, and interpretations of their findings have been divergent. The present study was a systematic review of these experiments, with a focus on experimental methods. Studies were compared on readability and factors effecting participant fatigue and comprehension. The results suggest that …

A Reliability Generalization Study Of The Brief Symptom Inventory-18, Dareen Taha Alzahrani Jan 2016

A Reliability Generalization Study Of The Brief Symptom Inventory-18, Dareen Taha Alzahrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reliability generalization (RG) is a meta-analytic method that aims to assess the variability of test score reliability across studies and identify the sources of this variability. In this study, a reliability generalization analysis was performed on studies of the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18) to examine the variability in Cronbach's alpha reliability estimates reported in the literature. This inventory was chosen because of its extensive use in counseling and medical settings and documented reliability and validity. The database that was consulted to collect articles was PsycInfo. The reported Cronbach's alphas were obtained to assess whether defined moderator variables affected reliability estimates. …

A Comparison Between Propensity Score Matching, Weighting, And Stratification In Multiple Treatment Groups: A Simulation Study, Priyalatha Govindasamy Jan 2016

A Comparison Between Propensity Score Matching, Weighting, And Stratification In Multiple Treatment Groups: A Simulation Study, Priyalatha Govindasamy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The application of propensity score techniques (matching, stratification, and weighting) with multiple treatment levels are similar to those used in binary groups. However, given that the application of propensity scores in multiple treatment groups is new, factors affecting the performance of matching, stratification, and weighting in multiple treatment groups are less explored. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the performance of different propensity score techniques with multiple treatment groups under various circumstances. Specifically, the study focused on examining how the three propensity score corrective techniques perform in estimating treatment effects under (1) overt and (2) hidden types of selection …

Don't Forget Your Parachute: Using The Ubd Framework To Guide Unit Planning, Angela Hines, Nicole Ludwa Jan 2016

Don't Forget Your Parachute: Using The Ubd Framework To Guide Unit Planning, Angela Hines, Nicole Ludwa

Instructional Modules for Professional learning Responding to Opportunities and Valuing Educators (IMPROVE)

The audience for this module includes educators at all levels of all subject matters. This module is designed for educators interested in increasing student understanding and in creating more effective curricula and assessment through unit planning, beginning with the end in mind. Thinking about what to teach and how to teach it is a matter of habit, thinking about the learning outcomes leads to appropriate teaching and is how backwards planning works. Lessons should be created by the results sought, not the activities with which a teacher is most comfortable. Many times teachers are focused on the inputs rather than …

Feedbackly – A Tool For Collecting Real-Time Feedback On The Student Experience., Steve Meaney Jan 2016

Feedbackly – A Tool For Collecting Real-Time Feedback On The Student Experience., Steve Meaney

Teaching Fellowships

In higher education institutes feedback is collected via various formal (e.g. quality assurance processes) and informal (e.g. one-to-one discussion) methods. A core distinction between these approaches is the immediacy of informal feedback set against a slower, but potentially more powerful, formal feedback mechanism. This project aimed to explore a real-time mechanism to explore the student experience, using a simple data entry point connected to a webaccessible dashboard which summarises the data. A prototype was successfully developed and deployed, and collected feedback from students across the College of Sciences and Health. The system was broadly used by students, with more than …

Literature Review Relating To The Current Context And Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education, School Readiness And Transition Programs To Primary School, Jacynta Krakouer Jan 2016

Literature Review Relating To The Current Context And Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education, School Readiness And Transition Programs To Primary School, Jacynta Krakouer

Indigenous Education Research

Since the educational experiences of Aboriginal Australians are often framed from a ‘deficit’ perspective, whereby the failures of Indigenous people to engage with the mainstream educational system are seen as the ‘problem’, an alternative approach to Indigenous early childhood education discourse is preferable. This alternative approach highlights the strengths that many Aboriginal children possess when commencing school, strengths that may result from Indigenous child-rearing practices. Consequently, this literature review utilises a strengths-based perspective for Aboriginal early childhood education and school readiness, noting that Aboriginal children are frequently expected to adapt to a foreign educational system whereby school expectations differ from …

Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh Jan 2016

Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh

Grant Evaluation & Statistical Support

This study presents comparisons of subset selection criteria used to help determine the "best" regression model in multiple linear regression. No such criteria can replace a researcher's knowledge of theory to help choose useful models, but such criteria may help in exploratory research. Relationships among variables can be more complicated than expected and may require adjustment to theory based on empirical models. Knowing how well each subset selection method performs can be useful in such cases. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compare a number of well-known criteria (e.g., AIC, BIC, PRESS, adjusted R2 ) to some less well-known …

Comparing Stepwise Regression Models To The Best-Subsets Models, Or, The Art Of Stepwise, Pornchanok Ruengvirayudh, Gordon P. Brooks Jan 2016

Comparing Stepwise Regression Models To The Best-Subsets Models, Or, The Art Of Stepwise, Pornchanok Ruengvirayudh, Gordon P. Brooks

Grant Evaluation & Statistical Support

Stepwise regression methods are widely recognized as undesirable for explanatory purposes. As exploratory methods, however, they may provide efficient means for researchers to examine multiple models for further investigation. This study used Monte Carlo methods to examine the use of forward and backward regression without stopping criteria (i.e., with customized stepping criteria) in order to create all possible stepwise models (i.e., from one predictor to the fully specified model). Using these stepwise methods without stopping criteria often produced the same models as best-subset regression when there was little multicollinearity. Agreement was still good, but it declined, as multicollinearity became stronger. …

The Secret Ingredient For Improving Infant/Child Mental Health: Teaching Parents To Play, Geraldine Healy Marini Jan 2016

The Secret Ingredient For Improving Infant/Child Mental Health: Teaching Parents To Play, Geraldine Healy Marini

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Disorders in mental health are the highest of all disorders and results in the most common form of disability. Since 2011, mental health disorders have increased at alarming rates. It is estimated that 9.5 to 14.2% of children between the ages of 0 to 5 years have and emotional or behavioral problem. The mental health of parents or caregivers can affect and impact the development of young children (Nelson & Mann, 2011, Zero to Three, 2004).

The over arching goal of this research is to explore issues of mental health within parent-child interactions. Coaching parents during the co-occupation of play …

Research As Preparation For Practice-Based Research, Robin Throne Ph.D., Linda K. Bowlin Ph.D., Steven A. Buckner Ph.D.

Conference Proceedings

At United States online doctoral institutions, many doctoral candidates focus their dissertation research on study problems that emerge from professional practice, which may serve as a vital first experience and preparation for continued practitioner or practice-based research. Although there have been many definitions offered as to what constitutes workplace research, this scholarly reflection explores three essential considerations for duality (dual roles), positionality, and stance in a doctoral dissertation research problem originating from a doctoral candidate’s workplace setting or professional practice. As a doctoral scholar with a dual role as a workplace professional and doctoral candidate, the doctoral candidate must often …
