Impact Of Community-Based Creative Arts Programs On Youth, Kasey Jacques, John Seipel, Nyairah Abdullah, Trelijah Miller
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The purpose of our study was to reflect on how community-based cultural arts programs have had an impact on academic achievement, academic performance, and self-esteem among youth, aged 13 to 24 years old. Community-based creative arts offer a medium through which youth direct their energy toward achieving positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes (Wright, John, Alaggia, & Sheel, 2006). Our study took an approach known as “Positive Youth Development (PYD).” According to Ersing (2009, page 27), “(PYD) is a promising approach that rejects labeling young people as ‘at risk’ for a host of social, emotional, and behavioral problems and, instead, …

Developing And Implementing A Sustainable Assessment Program For The Self-Aware College Language Tutor, Brian L. Adler
MA TESOL Collection
The aim of this project was to determine whether language tutors at a community college in the U.S. state of Virginia who play an active role in the design and implementation of new assessment strategies will see an increase in awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses and whether this awareness will drive them to change and adapt their learning and tutoring for the better. The author will show that assessment can be used as an avenue for tutors to share strengths with one another through indirect observation in the form of recorded tutoring sessions, qualitative surveys, and informal interviews. …

Progress In The Past Decade: An Examination Of The Precision Of Cluster Randomized Trials Funded By The U.S. Institute Of Education Sciences, Jessaca Spybrook, Ran Shi, Ben Kelcey
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
This article examines the statistical precision of cluster randomized trials (CRTs) funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Specifically, it compares the total number of clusters randomized and the minimum detectable effect size (MDES) of two sets of studies, those funded in the early years of IES (2002–2004) and those funded in the recent years (2011–2013). Overall, the average precision in terms of MDES of studies in the recent cohort was more than double that of the early cohort (i.e. 0.48 compared to 0.23). The findings suggest a consistent and substantial increase in the precision of CRTs funded by …

Binning For Equity And Access: Formative Assessment–Focused Teacher Professional Development For Middle School Mathematics Classrooms, Brent Duckor, Carrie Holmberg, Joanne Becker
Faculty Publications
While research has shown for over a decade that teachers who engage in formative assessment (FA) practices may have the most powerful impact on student learning (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Hattie, 2012) less is known about the development of teachers’ knowledge and use of formative assessment as they plan, enact, and reflect on their practice. Our qualitative case study focuses on how in-service middle school math teachers take up the specific moves (Author, 2014a) associated with formative assessment practice as they plan, enact, and reflect on their practices as part of a FA-focused professional development cycle of inquiry. The study …

Whose Reality? A Meta-Analysis Of Qualitative Research In International And Comparative Education, Romina B. Da Costa, Stephanie M. Hall, Anne Spear
The Qualitative Report
This meta-analysis seeks to critically examine the qualitative research being published in influential journals in the field of international and comparative education in order to determine whether qualitative research has remained true to the constructivist paradigm and its theoretical and philosophical underpinnings. Decades after the heated paradigmatic debates within the field of education in the 1980’s, we seek to examine whether predictions that the constructivist paradigm would be pushed out by the call for post-positivist, quantifiable, data-driven research have come to fruition. Based on a review of all qualitative research published in the past three volumes of five influential journals …

Student Learning Outcomes: Tools, Planning, And Contribution To Institutional Goals, Kathy Collins
Assessment in Action Conference
On our campuses, students spend a significant amount of time outside of the formal classroom. What are we doing to creatively think about capturing this learning and evaluating it to enhance the student experience? There are numerous ways to develop assessment plans, tools, and learning outcomes to provide evidence of student learning. Even more important is preparing and supporting quality professionals in the field to do quality assessment work.

Motivation For Mathematics: The Development And Initial Validation Of An Abbreviated Instrument, Kenneth Lee Butler
Motivation For Mathematics: The Development And Initial Validation Of An Abbreviated Instrument, Kenneth Lee Butler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study outlines the development and initial validation of an abbreviated instrument intended to measure motivation for mathematics of university students in developmental algebra courses. I look across many of the predominant theories on motivation with the aim of representing several of these theories as latent constructs in a single instrument that is short enough to be administered in a reasonable amount of time, but inclusive enough that it could incorporate subscales representing multiple distinct latent factors. This study answers a call by researchers expressing a need to investigate relationships between disparate theories on motivation and is a response to …
The 80 Percent Pension Funding Target, High Assumed Returns, And Generational Inequity, Robert M. Costrell
The 80 Percent Pension Funding Target, High Assumed Returns, And Generational Inequity, Robert M. Costrell
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Generational inequity in pension funding is highly sensitive to the lax policies of 80- percent funding targets and high assumed returns to investment. I develop a simple, powerful relationship between steady-state (SS) inequity in contributions – the percent of extra contributions to fund prior cohorts – and the SS unfunded ratio. I then show how the SS unfunded ratio is governed by x-percent funding targets and the gap between assumed and true returns. The SS degree of inequity is over 60 percent under an 80 percent funding target and over 50 percent with a one point gap between assumed and …
The Role Of Calibration Bias And Performance Feedback In Achievement Goal Regulation, Krista R. Muis, Philip H. Winne, John Ranellucci
The Role Of Calibration Bias And Performance Feedback In Achievement Goal Regulation, Krista R. Muis, Philip H. Winne, John Ranellucci
Publications and Research
Do achievement goals change across time in response to performance feedback? Does goal orientation relate to calibration of estimated to actual achievement? We studied these issues over three tasks spanning a semester-long course where ninety-nine undergraduates received feedback about performance on each task. Learners were consistently and quite substantially biased in estimating performance with bias inversely related to actual performance. Goal orientation was not stable across time as a function of task, and it varied in some tasks in relation to calibration accuracy. These findings demonstrate goal orientations are sensitive to task and feedback. Moreover, goal orientation had varying and …
The Evaluation Of Rhode Island Public High School Teachers: The Impact On Students, Stephen Lamontagne
The Evaluation Of Rhode Island Public High School Teachers: The Impact On Students, Stephen Lamontagne
Honors Projects in Mathematics
In 2012, the state of Rhode Island began the full implementation of a high-stakes teacher evaluation system. Its purpose is to increase teacher accountability and to improve student performance. However, a significant amount of literature casts doubt about the effectiveness and validity of teacher evaluation. This paper utilizes statistical methods including regression and decision trees in order to determine whether or not there is a relationship between teacher evaluation in Rhode Island and student performance, using RI Department of Education Data for each school from 2008-2015. Furthermore, this presentation investigates other factors that affect schools, to see if changes in …

Reviewing Measurement Invariance Of Questionnaire Constructs In Cross-National Research: Examples From Iccs 2016, Wolfram Schulz
Reviewing Measurement Invariance Of Questionnaire Constructs In Cross-National Research: Examples From Iccs 2016, Wolfram Schulz
Civics and Citizenship Assessment
nternational studies face the challenge of obtaining comparable measures across diverse national contexts, which are characterized by differences with regard to many factors such as language, culture, and educational contexts. In addition, in many countries there may also be differences across sub-national contexts (for example across regions or language groups). International studies in the field of education are increasingly incorporating ways of assessing the measurement invariance of the data obtained from tests or questionnaire used in these programs. In particular with regard to questionnaire items, there is a growing body of research indicating that questionnaire formats such as Likert-type rating …
Academic Factors That Predict Community College Students’ Acceptance Of Evolution, Meredith Anne Dorner
Academic Factors That Predict Community College Students’ Acceptance Of Evolution, Meredith Anne Dorner
Educational Studies Dissertations
There is great disagreement in the United States about with how evolution education should be dealt, as the acceptance of evolution is controversial among the general public of the United States. Furthermore, although a plethora of research has been conducted to understand which factors influence the understanding and acceptance of evolution among high school and university students -- and the general public -- there are few studies focusing on community college students. In an effort to help fill this gap in the literature, this dissertation investigates the relationship between the acceptance of evolution and academic factors among community college students. …
