Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background: For minority populations, there is a continuing disparity in the burden of death and illness from cancer. Research to address this disparity should be conducted by investigators who can best understand and address the needs of culturally diverse communities. However, minorities are under-represented in health-related research. The goal of this project was to develop and evaluate an approach to motivating and preparing master’s degree students for careers dedicated to cancer disparities research.

Method: A Cancer Disparities Research Training Program (CDRTP) was initiated in 2010. The program consists of coursework, practicum experiences, and research opportunities. Assessment of the curriculum is …

Has The Elite Foundation Agenda Spread Beyond The Gates? An Organizational Network Analysis Of Nonmajor Philanthropic Giving In K-12 Education, Joseph J. Ferrare, Katherine Reynolds

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

Previous research focusing on major philanthropic foundations suggests that these actors have collectively converged around a set of jurisdictional challengers promoting market-based education reforms. Using correspondence analysis, network analysis, and geographic information science, this article empirically tests whether this convergence has permeated to less prominent foundations and their grantees, or if these foundations are pursuing alternative organizational strategies to shape K–12 outcomes. The analysis draws from a sample of 15 nonmajor foundations and their 1,069 grantees serving some aspect of K–12 education in 2010. We find that nonmajor foundations have adopted some elements of major foundations’ organizational strategies to influence …

Open Educational Resources (Oer): A Framework For Adoption And Its Impact Assessment On Learning, Lewis Chongwony Oct 2016

Open Educational Resources (Oer): A Framework For Adoption And Its Impact Assessment On Learning, Lewis Chongwony

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

While there's general consensus among many stakeholders in the educational sector about the value and the need to deploy open educational resources (OER) as a potential cure to rising costs of instructional and learning materials, particularly textbooks; little agreement exists on how this noble endeavor should be mainstreamed. This could partly be due to complexities and variations in needs of various institutions as well as departments within the same institutions. In other words, there is a lack of universally accepted taxonomy of OER standards and clearinghouse and/or system dedicated to vetting quality and efficacy of OER. Additionally, not much research …

Boosting Graduation Rates In Texas Through Education Savings Accounts, Patrick J. Wolf Oct 2016

Boosting Graduation Rates In Texas Through Education Savings Accounts, Patrick J. Wolf

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Graduating from high school is a crucial outcome for young people. Unfortunately, 12 percent of Texas students fail to earn the vital credential of a high school diploma. Private school choice has a proven track record of increasing graduation rates. In this study I draw upon prior research, Texas demographics, and conservative assumptions to forecast that the launch of a universal private school choice program in the form of Education Savings Accounts in the fall of 2017 would generate 11,809 additional high school graduates in the Lone Star State by 2022. In other words, of those students attending high school …

This evaluation focuses on an intermediate goal of the organization — effective teaching practices — and uses a matching strategy to determine the effectiveness of Arkansas Teacher Corps Fellows. Data comes from third party observations and student surveys. ATC teachers are rated significantly higher on constructs of content knowledge, teacher-student relationships in class, and teacher-student relationships out of class by students. There are no significant differences between ATC and non-ATC teachers noted by observers …

Low German Mennonite Experiences In Alternative Education Programs In Southwestern Ontario, Cameron Brubacher Oct 2016

Low German Mennonite Experiences In Alternative Education Programs In Southwestern Ontario, Cameron Brubacher

Social Justice and Community Engagement

Low German Speaking (LGS) Mennonites have had a tumultuous relationship with Canadian educational institutions in the past, resulting in many from the community migrating to Mexico in the 1920s. Since the 1950s, LGS Mennonites from Mexico and South America have been migrating back to Canada, with over 40,000 making their homes in Ontario. Many in Ontario, however, still have misgivings about public education. With such a large presence in Ontario, Ontario schools need to make sure that they are inclusive places for this minority group. This MRP utilizes open-ended interviews to hear the experiences and views of Low German Speaking …

The Perceptions Of Missouri High School Principals In Regard To The Missouri Learning Standards, Christopher Lee Kell Oct 2016

The Perceptions Of Missouri High School Principals In Regard To The Missouri Learning Standards, Christopher Lee Kell

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to elicit the perceptions of high school principals regarding state education standards and whether or not increasing education standards has a positive impact on student achievement. Missouri adopted a new set of standards which placed academic focus on fewer topics per subject and required teachers to create lessons that increased critical thinking within the classroom (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education [MODESE], 2013b). To identify how the new standards might affect student achievement, four research questions were asked as part of this study. As a result of these questions, findings showed perceptions of …

An Exploration Of Informed Student Goal Setting On Achievement In A Midwest Middle School, Laura Conley Oct 2016

An Exploration Of Informed Student Goal Setting On Achievement In A Midwest Middle School, Laura Conley

Dissertations

This dissertation is a mixed-methods study that critically looked at peer-reviewed articles and empirical research findings about goal setting for middle school students and the possible effects that goal setting had on achievement. The study spawned from the literature review and critically assessed one teacher’s use of the informed goal setting process to affect the achievement of her Midwestern middle school students. Students in the treatment group completed pre and post-questionnaires that assessed their understanding of goal setting and achievement. …

Socialization And Retention Of Part-Time Doctoral Students: A Review Of Ten Years Of Literature, Mildred Cunningham, Christy L. Spurlock

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

The growing population of part-time doctoral students has created a need for research into the determining factors for part-time doctoral student success, especially related to retention and program completion. In order to gain a better understanding of the current literature and its importance, the researchers used purposive sampling and thematic analysis to compile emerging factors from over 20 recent articles. Three themes materialized: the growing part-time student population; the differing needs of part-time versus full-time students; and the need for specialized student support resources for part-timers. This article explains the analysis and present findings that indicate that the socialization process …

The Role Of The Technology Coach In Middle School English Language Arts Classrooms, Brenda Christine Conyac Oct 2016

The Role Of The Technology Coach In Middle School English Language Arts Classrooms, Brenda Christine Conyac

Dissertations

Technology should play an important role in K-12 education, according to most educators and policymakers (Hastings, 2009). However, despite numerous classroom technology initiatives, supplemental funding, increased availability, encouragement by stakeholders, and urgency to develop 21st-century skills needed for the technology age, students and teachers are not making use of technology effectively in classrooms (Hastings, 2009). In this qualitative study, the researcher detailed how perceptions of technology coaches and teachers in sixth- through eighth-grade southwest Missouri classrooms related to the best model for implementing a technology coach. The duties and qualifications perceived to be important for the position of technology coach …

Action Research Using Entomological Research To Promote Hands-On Science Inquiry In A High-Poverty, Midwest Urban High School, Dustin Stockmann

Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods action research study was to examine to what extent entomological research can promote students’ hands-on learning in a high-poverty, urban, secondary setting. In reviewing the literature, the researcher was not able to find a specific study that investigated how entomological research could promote the hands-on learning of students. The researcher did find evidence that research on learning in a secondary setting was important to student growth. It should also be noted that support was established for the implementation of hands-on science inquiry in the classroom setting. The study’s purpose was to aid educators in their …

In addition, data were also examined to determine if there was a relationship between how teachers from the two groups responded …
