Carrying On Traditions, Sharing Knowledge: Communities In Midwestern Families And College Classrooms, Sue Kuykendall

Sabbaticals

Since both of my grandmothers were teachers in one-room schools and both my mother and my father attended one-room schools through the eighth grade, I grew up listening to stories about what it was like to teach and to go to school in these rural educational settings. I think it was these stories, along with the knowledge that I would be carrying on a family tradition, that largely motivated me to choose teaching as my profession. And I've always felt that in some way I was doing that--continuing the work that my grandmothers did and continuing the tradition of small-community …

Highlights From The Timss 1999 Video Study Of Eighth Grade Science Teaching

TIMSS 1999

The results of the TIMSS 1999 Video Study of eighth-grade science teaching suggest different country-specific patterns of eighth-grade science teaching in each of the participating countries and highlight the role of content and a core instructional approach in the relatively higher-achieving countries. Despite some commonalities across the countries, each of the countries, including the four higher-achieving countries, had a distinct approach to science teaching, providing students with different opportunities to learn science and different visions of what it means to understand science. The countries varied in the organizational features, content features, and the ways in which students were involved in …

Augmenting Postgraduate Student Problem-Solving Ability By The Use Of Critical Thinking Exercises, M N. Johnstone

EDU-COM International Conference

This paper describes the results of a research programme whose focus was critical thinking and explores how information technology (IT) postgraduate students model problems. Some results from the programme show that IT students appear to improve their problem-solving ability by undertaking structured critical thinking exercises. An AC Nielsen survey commissioned by DETYA in 2000 sought to gauge employer satisfaction with graduates using a variety of methods including questionnaires, focus groups and in-depth interviews. A key finding was that ‗the skills employers consider to be most important in graduates are creativity and flair, enthusiasm and the capacity for independent and critical …

This study utilizes six-year graduation rates and E&G expenditures for the population of all public, four-year or more degree-granting institutions in the United States, as reported in the National Center for Educational Statistics’ IPEDS database, to examine the correlation between graduation rate and institutional expenditures expressed as percentages of total institutional E&G expenditure. Results of this study’s partial correlation analysis revealed there is not a strong correlation between graduation rate and levels of E&G expenditures. Further, the study showed that the proportions of E&G expenditures do not vary appreciably at institutions with the highest, lowest, or mid-level six-year graduation rates. …

Best Practices Of National Board Certified Teachers And Non-Board Certified Teachers In Grades One And Two, Sue Ellen Hollandsworth Jan 2006

Best Practices Of National Board Certified Teachers And Non-Board Certified Teachers In Grades One And Two, Sue Ellen Hollandsworth

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The education of children in America has been the cause of much debate and conflict. At the center of this debate is the need for quality teachers. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was formed to advance the quality of teaching and learning by recognizing accomplished teaching. Teachers with this certification fit West Virginia’s definition of a highly qualified teacher under No Child Left Behind. If the National Board Certification (NBC) itself is reason for the highly qualified designation then the classroom practices of those teachers should differ from those who have not gone through the certification process. …

Correlations Between The Wisc-Iv, Sb: V, And The Wj-Iii Tests Of Achievement : Which Has A Better Relationship With Reading Achievement?, Krystal Campbell Jan 2006

Correlations Between The Wisc-Iv, Sb: V, And The Wj-Iii Tests Of Achievement : Which Has A Better Relationship With Reading Achievement?, Krystal Campbell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The relationship between the WISC-IV and the SB: V to three reading subtests on the WJ-III Tests of Achievement was used to determine which intelligence test correlates better with achievement using 22 students. Results yielded insignificant values when assessing significant relationships, comparing two correlated correlations, and significance between means. This study concludes that both intelligence tests measure reading similarly and does not result in whether or not one should be preferred over the other. Future implications to further validate these results would include a larger and more generalized population.

The Community's Contribution To Science Learning: Making It Count, Leonie Rennie Jan 2006

The Community's Contribution To Science Learning: Making It Count, Leonie Rennie

2006 - Boosting Science Learning - What will it take?

Underpinning the title of this address are two assumptions. The first is that the community should contribute to science learning. To justify this assumption, I describe a little of what we know about the outcomes of learning science. The second assumption is that the potential community contribution needs some assistance to ‘make it count’. To explain this, I outline community-based opportunities for learning science, meld this with what we know about learning outside of school, and then use case studies to illustrate how we can make it count.

Primary Connections: A New Approach To Primary Science And To Teacher Professional Learning, Mark Hackling Jan 2006

Primary Connections: A New Approach To Primary Science And To Teacher Professional Learning, Mark Hackling
