A Teaching Strategy Using Visual Literacy Skills In Grades Four Through Six, Mark Truman Collins

The purpose of the project was to develop a brief curriculum which would provide classroom activities related to visual literacy. The project was focused on grades four, five, and six. Visual literacy activities were developed to be used as learning experiences to develop specific visual skills. Other activities were also developed to be used as teaching aids in the subject areas of language arts and reading. The lessons were then tested on a limited basis in classroom situations. The results of the tests showed the activities to be functional and motivational.

The Effects Of An Active Student Council On Total Student Body Behavior, James Hoffman

This paper represents a study of the activation of iii a student council and its effects on total school climate. The activation program was outlined with specific activities described in detail. The study was designed to provide for a comparison of predetermined indicators which were measured before and after the activation took place. Conclusions included positive observations made during the course of the study and recommendations for implementing more student involvement in the ongoing business of the school.

The writer was requested to identify activities which might provide a more effective occupational curriculum at the Occupational Skills Center (OSC), a cooperative facility serving the high school students in the Federal Way, South Central and Highline School Districts.

As the reading specialist in an elementary school, it was my responsibility to assist the classroom teachers with their reading program; specifically, with those students who were having difficulty. It was not feasible for me to meet with all who needed help; at the most, I could help forty-three students per week. The pace at which I had to function to assess and meet their individual needs became too great. In view of this situation, the following program was designed to stimulate every intermediate student's desire to read and to do so at his own pace.

The purpose of this field study is actually two-fold. First, one must understand Martin Luther King Elementary School. King is an "open concept" school. The program is based upon different teaching techniques and philosophies than a more traditional type elementary school. After his years at King, a student then goes on to McLaughlin Junior High. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the degree of individual growth in reading ability made by the pupils enrolled in the Reading Improvement classes at the Emerson Elementary School, Seattle, Washington, during the 1957-1958 school year; (2) to keep an accurate record and description of techniques and materials used in securing this individual growth; and (3) to present the findings in a form that might be of assistance to other teachers in developing similar programs.

The small high school has some problems to overcome in order to do an effective job in the guidance of its young people. It is difficult for the staff to find time for guidance activities in the busy schedule of today's curriculum. Released time is very necessary if effective counseling is to be done.
