Online Vs. Face-To-Face Instruction: Similarities, Differences, And Efficacy, David Barnett, Lola Aagaard

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Developing leadership skills within graduate students who aspire to be school administrators requires that these students be involved in authentic experiences similar to those faced by today’s school leaders. While conventional graduate training has relied heavily on face-to-face instruction, the proliferation and availability of technology within today’s society has more and more students seeking training in an online setting. Professors make an effort to provide authentic experiences online, but sometimes are unsure of their effectiveness. What are the perceptions of graduate students pursuing leadership certification who are involved in online classes versus face-to-face instruction? Participants in this study indicated that …

The Effects Of School Location On Math And Science Achievement Trends: A Primer On Growth Modeling In Education Policy Research, Edward B. Reeves Jan 2005

The Effects Of School Location On Math And Science Achievement Trends: A Primer On Growth Modeling In Education Policy Research, Edward B. Reeves

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The effect of school location on math and science learning is currently an important policy issue in the United States and in other countries, such as Australia. The present paper uses a 5-year series of math and science achievement data from the state of Kentucky to determine the effects of school location on learning in these subject areas. Adopting an organizational assessment approach, I show how growth models may be used to estimate achievement trends. I also demonstrate methods for discovering two important sources of invalidity in growth models: regression artifacts and spuriousness. Failure to account for these sources of …

Fighting For Freedom: The 1649 War Between The Cossacks And The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Adrian Mandzy Jan 2005

Fighting For Freedom: The 1649 War Between The Cossacks And The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Adrian Mandzy

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

To most westerners, the Cossacks remain a mysterious and romanticized people. Nineteenth century writers and artists depict the Cossacks as extraordinary horsemen. This image is often reinforced by descriptions of Cossacks immune to the vigour of the Russian winter as they continued to nip at the heels of Napoleon’s Grand Army in 1812. Novels, like Gogol’ s Taras Bulba, and the opera Mazepa, suggests the Cossacks were both cruel and crafty, while others highlight their barbarity and backwardness.

The Effects Of Rural High School On Attending College And Earning A Bachelor’S Degree? A Multivariate Longitudinal Analysis Of A National Cohort Of High School Seniors, Christopher S. Snyder Oct 2004

The Effects Of Rural High School On Attending College And Earning A Bachelor’S Degree? A Multivariate Longitudinal Analysis Of A National Cohort Of High School Seniors, Christopher S. Snyder

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examines the effects of attending a rural high school on postsecondary education outcomes. Besides rural high school attendance, other school, family, and individual characteristics are examined to determine if they moderate the effects of high school location upon entering a four-year college or not and graduating with a B.A. degree or higher. Using data for the 1992 cohort of high school seniors gleaned from the National Educational Longitudinal Survey (NELS 88/2000), the results indicate that the long-term effects of receiving a rural high school education are not as detrimental as some previous research has suggested. The disadvantages of …

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore Oct 2003

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

Interfacing An 8085-Based Microcontroller: A Practical Approach To Developing Computer Applications Skills, Ahmad Zagari, Jien-Ren Li

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In the Electronics Technology course – EE 445, students were directed to construct, troubleshoot, and interface an 8085-based microcontroller in order to control electromechanical circuits. This microprocessor, using Intel 8085A processor, was assembled from components and was interfaced to take full control of a stepper motor’s motion. In addition, the microprocessor’s application to generate and measure waveforms was examined. This manuscript attempts to describe the basic architecture of a microcontroller system, and examine its interfacing techniques as well as its applications in providing communication to the outside world.

The Pinto Legacy: The Community As An Indirect Victim Of Corporate Deviance, Paul J. Becker, Arthur J. Jipson, Alan Bruce

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In 1978, in Elkhart County Indiana, three teenage girls died following an "accident" in which their Ford Pinto was struck from behind and burst into flames. Two years later, in what has been described as a landmark case (Maakestad, 1987; Clinard, 1990; Frank and Lynch, 1992; Hills, 1987), a trial began in which the Ford Motor Company, as a result of this incident, found itself facing three charges of reckless homicide (State of Indiana v. Ford Motor Company, hereafter referred to as the Pinto Case). While this was not the first time an automobile manufacturer was faced with a potentially …

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Eight studies of data warehousing failures are presented. They were written based on interviews with people who were associated with the projects. The extent of the failure varies with the organization, but in all cases, the project was at least a disappointment. Read the cases and prepare a one or two page discussion of the following: 1. What’s the scope of what can be considered a data warehousing failure? Discuss. 2. What generalizations apply across the cases? 3. What do you find most interesting in the failure stories? 4. Do they provide any insights about how a failure might be …

Taking Instruction Online: The Art Of Delivery, Donna R. Everett

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The notion that people seek to make meaning out of their world, whether it is the classroom or the living room, is not a new one. Educational philosophers and learning theorists have attempted to explain how learners learn and construct meaning from instruction or the classroom. Stimulus-response theorists (Thorndike, Guthrie, Pavlov—as cited in Hilgard & Bower, 1966; Watson, 1960; and Skinner, 1960) view learners as reactive, passive robots only responding when stimulated by something outside of themselves. Reese & Overton (1970) propose to call this the mechanistic world view—any change in the learners comes from outside of themselves. Organismic theorists …
