Classroom Personalities Of Effective Teachers Within A Technical College Setting, Fred Manley

Dissertations

This study used student ratings to examine relationships between instructor personality and teaching effectiveness for technical college faculty. Research was specifically conducted to address three questions: (1) what personality traits are associated with effective teaching, (2) do the personality profiles of effective teachers differ by academic area, and (3) are there personality dimensions that distinguish above average from below-average instructors.

Students enrolled in classes taught by instructors randomly selected from the accounting, computer information systems, marketing, and office occupations departments at five Wisconsin technical colleges rated their instructors on 29 personality traits and 18 teaching behaviors. Pearson product-moment correlations were …

In The Name Of The Student... What Is Fairness In College Teaching?, Rita Rodabaugh Jan 1995

In The Name Of The Student... What Is Fairness In College Teaching?, Rita Rodabaugh

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

If we remember our own college days, most of us can think of at least one professor who was less than ideal. All of us have had professors who fit one or more of the following descriptions: dull, boring lecturer; confusing and hard to follow; too easy and presents no challenge; and so on. Yet if you describe your worst experience as a student, more than likely it was one in which you were treated unfairly.

For the past two years, much of my research has focused on college students' perceptions of fair practices in the classroom. From this research, …

Emerging Trends In College Teaching For The 21st Century, Milton D. Cox Jan 1995

Emerging Trends In College Teaching For The 21st Century, Milton D. Cox

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

After national calls for the reform of undergraduate education were made a decade ago, students, parents, and legislators began to apply pressure to reestablish the importance of student learning. More recently, central administrators have begun to change reward structures. University-wide community is beginning to be built around teaching. New disciplinary journals that publish the scholarship of teaching are being started, and established ones are gaining respect. National teaching conferences and journals that provide a forum for the scholarship of teaching are expanding. With these emerging opportunities, faculty are going public about their interest in teaching and learning. Over the last …

Negotiating The Future: Nlra Paradigm And The Prospects For Labor Law Reform, William C. Green

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Japan's rising economic prowess in the 1980's and its penetration of the North American automobile marketplace produced a major economic restructuring. Seven Asian automobile assembly plants, along with four Japanese-Big Three joint ventures, and GM's Saturn were built across the industrial heartland of the United States and Canada.' This common experience, accompanied by a transformation in industrial production methods and the reorganization of work defined in terms of Japanese lean production techniques and cooperative labor relations, created a crisis for the Fordist regime of industrial production, its system of labor-management relations, and organized labor. Lean production has also created a …

An Exploration Of Students’ And Business Persons’ Ratings Of The Importance Of Writing Skills For Business Success, Miriam P. Coleman Dec 1994

An Exploration Of Students’ And Business Persons’ Ratings Of The Importance Of Writing Skills For Business Success, Miriam P. Coleman

Dissertations

The central question explored in this research was whether the perceptions of undergraduate students and business employers about the importance of writing skills for success in business differ from one another. Related questions were posed about the relationship of certain individual characteristics such as sex, student classification, and student institutional affiliation and their interactions to these perceptions.

Subjects were selected from both public and private institutions of higher education and 11 medium-sized businesses in western Michigan. Data collection was accomplished using two 30-item Likert-type Importance of Business Writing (IBW) questionnaires developed for obtaining information on the perceptions of subjects relative …

The Process Of General Education Reform: An Impossible Dream ... Almost!, Thomas D. Curran, David F. Curtis, Frances S. Grodzinsky

SHU Faculty Publications

The simplest explanation for why Sacred Heart University began a review for creating a new general education curriculum is that the last university strategic plan (1989-94) called for it and a faculty survey showed strong support for it.

A process so long and intense as curriculum revision must finally teach us many things.

The Why Of Teacher/Student Relationships, Richard G. Tiberius Jan 1994

The Why Of Teacher/Student Relationships, Richard G. Tiberius

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

I heard it again last week, "Yeah, she has a good relationship with her students, but can she teach?", as if the two were completely separate entities, like the icing and the cake. But a teacher's relationship with learners is not icing. It is an essential component of the teaching and learning process. Plumbers and computer technicians may be able to perform useful services on sinks and computers without entering into relation with them or with their owners but teaching simply cannot happen without teachers entering into relation with their students. Moreover, the teacher's success in facilitating learning is directly …
