Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Perceptions of student and professor competence and respect were investigated through a survey of 2042 students from 77 liberal arts colleges, both Christian and non-Christian. The Christian schools are part of the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities); CCCU responses were 78.5 percent of the total. Chi- Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine if gender and type of college affected students’ responses. Two conclusions can be made about student competence and value: (1) male CCCU students are most likely to believe that male students are viewed as more competent than female students and (2) non-CCCU students are …

The Effects Of The Use Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Achievement And Interest, Heidi B. Hansen
The Effects Of The Use Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Achievement And Interest, Heidi B. Hansen
Mathematics Graduate Theses
This study examines the current research that exists on the effects that the use of dynamic geometry software has on student achievement and interest level in mathematics. Additional questions examined are whether using dynamic geometry software has a greater impact on high or low achievers, and what current methods of implementation are suggested by the research. A review of the relevant literature indicates that the use of dynamic geometry software does have a positive effect on student achievement, particularly achievement in areas of high-level thinking. Insufficient research has been done on the effect that the use of dynamic geometry software …

Administrator And Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact And Effectiveness Of Academic Standards On Select Indiana High Schools, Andrew T. Melin
Administrator And Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact And Effectiveness Of Academic Standards On Select Indiana High Schools, Andrew T. Melin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in perception of high school teachers and administrators, as well as the differences in perception between math and language arts teachers and all other teachers, in regard to teacher understanding of state standards, the level of standards' implementation in instruction, and the degree to which student achievement is affected by a standards' focused curriculum. Teachers and administrators were compared because current school accountability legislation on both a state and national level places greater pressure on administrators than on teachers to assure standards are taught. Math and language arts teachers were …
Essay Review: A Marxist Critique Of Michael Apple’S Neo-Marxist Approach To Educational Reform, Ramin Farahmandpur
Essay Review: A Marxist Critique Of Michael Apple’S Neo-Marxist Approach To Educational Reform, Ramin Farahmandpur
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay review examines Apple's most recent work. It begins by providing a brief historical account of Marxist educational theory since the late 1970s. Next, it offers an analysis and a critique of a number of the theoretical underpinnings of Apple's neo-Marxist approach to educational reform. These include, among others, his interpretation of Gramsci's concept of the 'commonsense' his employment of the 'decentered unity' which he identifies as an counter-hegemonic alliance among progressive forces on the left; and finally, his notion of a 'dual strategy' for building alliances between progressive forces on the left and those on the Right. Finally, …

Tales From Two Cities: Service-Learning As A Christian Educational Practice, Todd Ream
Tales From Two Cities: Service-Learning As A Christian Educational Practice, Todd Ream
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
As an educational practice, service-learning offers an important means by which to work toward the integration of the curricular and co-curricular efforts on our respective campuses. However, the larger conceptual framework through which service-learning is defined and exercised is driven by what Augustine defines as the city of the world in a way that neglects the significance of what he referred to as the City of God. In this article, I identify the roots of this problem and offer an alternative conceptual framework for service-learning as a Christian educational practice. This conceptual framework challenges Christian educators to not just engage …

Using Electronic Portfolios As A Pedagogical Practice To Enhance Student Learning, Yves P. Labissiere, Candyce Reynolds
University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Real learning transcends barriers of time and place. It can also provide a bag of tools one can take on the journey through life. Some students, unfortunately, leave college with empty toolkits, or ones they do not know how to open. Engaging students in the process of salient, transformative learning is a challenge, but one worth taking. Tagg (2004) speaks eloquently in a recent About Campus article about the need for faculty to use practices in the classroom that improve the quality of learning, and calls for faculty to help students claim their learning and engage in what Kegan (1995) …

Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel
Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Education at a Christian college properly features both honest inquiry and unwavering allegiance to core theological standards, such as those embodied in the classical creeds. This combination of commitments can create tension for the Christian educator, as insistence upon doctrinal allegiance can inadvertently reinforce dogmatic attitudes so common among late adolescents. In this paper I discuss the virtue of intellectual humility and its importance for combating student dogmatism in an atmosphere of steadfast Christian commitment. After distinguishing between theological essentials and disputable matters, I discuss philosophical and theological grounds for being intellectually humble. And I illustrate ways in which faculty …

The Ongoing War For The Soul Of School Administration, Theodore J. Kowalski
The Ongoing War For The Soul Of School Administration, Theodore J. Kowalski
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The volume in which this essay appears was a response to the book Better Leaders for America’s Schools: A Manifesto, published in 2003 by the the Broad Foundation and the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation. It was created around the premise that America's schools face a crisis in leadership. For America to have the great schools it needs, it contended, schools and their school systems must have great leaders.
The material to which Dr. Kowalski's essay responds is available online here>>>.

The purpose of the study was twofold. First, the study attempted to predict how post-secondary two-year college faculty embraced change as measured by the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ). Second, the study assessed whether formal training in the use of assessment centers would affect the concerns, attitudes and perceptions of college faculty at a post-secondary two-year institution about the implementation ofthe assessment center innovation in their institutions. This study used existing data collected by Ivy Tech State College- Wabash Valley Region. The population consisted of 44 faculty members from Ivy Tech State College- Wabash Valley Region who completed the SoCQ …

Education Technology
This report presents some early evaluation evidence on the effectiveness and impact of the implementation of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI). The goal of the Year One evaluation, which is being conducted by the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI), is to provide policymakers and practitioners with information that will assist them in determining whether or not, and to what degree, the vision and goals of the MLTI are being achieved. The Year One design is focusing primarily on the students who entered seventh grade in September 2002, and their teachers and schools.
The MEPRI evaluation team has focused …

Through A Mirror Dimly: Social Constructionism Through The Lens Of Faith, Amy Quillin
Through A Mirror Dimly: Social Constructionism Through The Lens Of Faith, Amy Quillin
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Postmodernism has often been excoriated in Christian circles for its departure from commonly recognized principles of truth seeking. How can we, as educators, help students grapple wisely with this pervasive worldview in the context of encouraging a biblical and vibrant development of their faith? Are there components within postmodernism that might help inform students’ faith development? This article will examine social constructionism, a variant of postmodernism, from the lens of Christian faith and spirituality, and will attempt to answer some of those questions.
