An Evaluation Of Project Iread: A Program Created To Improve Sight Word Recognition, Theresa Meade Marshall

This program evaluation was undertaken to examine the relationship between participation in Project iRead and student gains in word recognition, fluency, and comprehension as measured by the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Test. Linear regressions compared the 2012-13 PALS results from 5,140 first and second grade students at adopting and non-adopting schools. Similar regressions were performed at early and late adopting schools. The outcomes for Project iRead indicated statistically significant improvement in word recognition at the district level. However, the results were not practically significant as less than 1% of the variation was explained by the model. In addition, Project …

Methods and models used to evaluate the teaching performance of theatre arts teachers appear to have limited applicability due to the specialized nature of theatre in the classroom. Instructional leaders whose responsibilities include observation and evaluation may find additional challenges when charged with evaluating theatre arts teachers using general educational evaluation models. The present study aimed to build on existing research surrounding struggling adolescent readers. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of the reading program READ 180(TM) by Scholastic, Inc., on struggling adolescent readers in a middle school setting and also to examine whether this intervention has promise for closing the achievement gap between African-American and white students.;The study was conducted using a nonequivalent control-group design. Licensed primary teachers (N = 93) in nine schools completed surveys of their self-efficacy beliefs, level of implementation, and the value they placed on the strategies before and after participating in four levels of inservice training in the Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading. The independent variable was the structure of the training teachers received, and the dependent variables were teacher sense of efficacy in general, teacher sense of efficacy for reading, implementation of the reading strategies, and the value of the reading strategies taught. This study investigated principals' and teachers' perceptions about professional development and conditions for change. Specifically, the following research questions were answered: (1) How do principals describe professional development at their schools? (2) What professional development experiences did teachers report as having an effect on their teaching practice? and (3) What common factors or conditions did teachers at the three schools report as influencing whether they change their classroom practices after participating in professional development initiatives?;Data collection incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies using principal interviews and teacher surveys. The purpose of this study was to determine what types of programs designed to stimulate students' independent reading were being utilized or had been utilized in the past five years in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This descriptive study examined how such programs were selected, implemented, and evaluated plus business involvement and incentives.;The sample consisted of 102 or 77% of the 132 school divisions whose superintendents had an original and confidential survey completed and returned.;of the 367 programs, Pizza Hut's accounted for 87% and SSR for 78%. A literature search or a professional journal influenced the selection of 34%. Businesses were …
