Women In The Trenches: Barriers To Female Staff's Advancement In Higher Education, Carla A. Costello

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This qualitative phenomenological case study examined the intersection of organizational structures and gender, as well as perceptions of climate, and their collective impact on professional advancement opportunities of women working in lower-level positions in higher education, namely classified and professional staff (Acker, 1990; Allan, 2011; Kanter, 1977). Kanter's (1977) theory of the role of structure in organizations posits that position in the organizational hierarchy and work role influence the amount of access an employee has to information, resources, promotional opportunities, and support. In gendered organizations (Acker, 1990, 2006), women face barriers in advancement. While Kanter (1977) argued that structure not …

The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati Jan 2012

The Millennial Generation: Howe And Strauss Disputed, Holly Alexander Agati

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Researchers have attempted to untangle the complexity of a generation through four primary effects---time interval, cohort, period, and attitude---based on personal and societal attributes. The Millennial generation, born 1982-2000, has received considerable attention through the media, in educational institutions, and in the workplace. The seven persona characterization of the Millennials of Howe and Strauss (1991, 2000) has been extensively cited, yet not been widely scrutinized. Higher education personnel, in particular, have utilized Howe and Strauss' theory to explain changes observed with the current college student population.;This case study sought to discover the relationship and interrelationship between the four-generation effects and …

A Balancing Act: Division Iii Student-Athletes Time Demands And Life Roles, Daniel R. Hoover Jr.

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A majority of the research on student-athletes occurs at the Division I level, acid less is known about Division III student-athletes. The scant research addressing the experiences of Division III students-athletes focused on academics, campus involvement, development, and athletic identity (Griffith & Johnson, 2002; Heuser & Gray, 2009; Richards & Aries, 1993; Schroeder, 2000; Umbach, Palmer, Kuh, & Hannah, 2006). What remains unknown is how they manage life roles as Division III student-athletes.;This case study sought to address the time demands and life roles (e.g. athletics, family, friendship, religion, academic, and romantic interests) of student-athletes. Two private, Division Ill institutions …

Situatedness: The Interrelation Of Factors Impacting The Educational Pathway To Degree Attainment Among Black And White Doctoral Students, Candice P. Baldwin

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Given the absence of a comprehensive theory of doctoral student persistence within the current literature base, the purpose of this study was to propose and test a model that would predict doctoral degree completion using an integrated scheme of background, financial support, and experience variables between Black and White students. The impact and interaction of these variables was explored individually and collectively to describe a concept defined as situatedness. The situatedness model illustrates that a student's background is related to the financial support they receive in doctoral programs; in turn, these factors are connected to a student's departmental and personal …

The Impact Of Organizational Culture On The Academic Success Of Historically Black College And University Athletes: A Case Study, Ralph Charlton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Increasing the graduation rates of student athletes is one of the more visible NCAA academic goals. Overall student-athlete graduation rates have improved significantly among many institutional members. However, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) student-athlete graduation rates lag considerably behind. Although the NCAA claims that a causal relationship exists between lack of economic resources and lower student-athlete graduation rate for HBCUs, analysis within Division I HBCUs indicates no relationship between per student academic spending and the student-athlete graduation rates. Seeking an additional explanation for graduation rates, this case study examined the organizational culture of an HBCU athletic department with an …

Rape Myth Acceptance, Hypermasculinity, And Demographic Characteristics As Correlates Of Moral Development: Understanding Sexually Aggressive Attitudes In First Year College Men, Jerry Lee Tatum

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Male perpetrated sexual aggression has long been recognized as a serious problem on college campuses. The purpose of this Multiple Regression Correlation research design study was to assess the relationship between levels of moral development (measured by the Defining Issues Test) and the degree to which first year college men (N = 161) ascribed to rape supportive attitudes. Rape supportive attitudes, for the purposes of this study, included assessed levels of rape myth endorsements (measured by the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale [IRMA]) and hypermasculinity (measured by the Hypermasculinity Inventory). Respondents completed three research instruments and a demographic questionnaire prior …

One-third of the women were African American.;Information on each woman was …

School-University Partnerships: An Exploration Of The Relationship, Daisy Bertha Wood Jan 1996

School-University Partnerships: An Exploration Of The Relationship, Daisy Bertha Wood

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of a particular model for collaboration when applied to a successful school-university partnership. A specific framework for establishing and maintaining successful school-university partnerships, proposed by Frank Wilbur of Syracuse University, was identified in the literature. Wilbur's model was selected as the conceptual framework for this study since it contains critical elements supported by at least four other researchers studying and writing on collaborative endeavors and was, in fact, the most comprehensive of any of the suggested conceptual frameworks. The answer to one overall research question was sought: to what extent …

Faculty Moonlighting: An Exploratory Study Of The Motivation For Seeking Outside Employment And Its Relationship To The Effectiveness Of Community College Faculty, Joanna Davis Hanks Jan 1996

Faculty Moonlighting: An Exploratory Study Of The Motivation For Seeking Outside Employment And Its Relationship To The Effectiveness Of Community College Faculty, Joanna Davis Hanks

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Full-time community college faculty moonlight to a much greater extent than does the general workforce. The number of faculty who work second jobs outside of their full-time teaching contract can be projected to exceed 40 percent with a strong possibility that more than half have employment outside of their primary faculty jobs. Chief community college administrators do not believe--or are not willing to admit--that their full-time faculty are so engaged in outside employment.;When faced with years of the same teaching assignments, heavy teaching and advising workloads but limited opportunities and resources for professional growth and renewal, veteran community college faculty …

"Mattering" Doesn't Matter: An Analysis Of Adult Undergraduate Persistence Patterns, Terri Laskey Fauber Jan 1996

"Mattering" Doesn't Matter: An Analysis Of Adult Undergraduate Persistence Patterns, Terri Laskey Fauber

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A steady rise in the number of nontraditional students combined with high attrition has raised questions about whether postsecondary institutions have been effective in creating environments that facilitate adult student success. This concern led to the current study which investigates whether adult undergraduate perceptions of environmental support and responsiveness to student needs affects persistence patterns.;Tinto's (1993) Academic and Social Integration Model and Schlossberg, Lynch, and Chickerings' (1989) ecological perspective have guided this study. Students' perceptions play a critical role in their willingness to become engaged or involved in the educational environment and therefore affect persistence. Schlossberg, Lasalle, and Golecs' (1990) …

Managing Change For A Distance Learning Initiative: An Evaluation, Jeanie Pollard Kline

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this case study was to examine the degree to which those managing change for a distance learning initiative followed David Nadler's (1989) four action steps designed to reduce resistance in making the transition from the former operational state to a newly-created state.;The four action steps include providing opportunities for participation among employees, allowing employees to identify current operations that will not work in the new organizational state, rewarding behavior that assists in the transition, and allowing sufficient time for the change to take place. The findings in this study revealed that participation was the critical component that …

The College Investment Decision For Nontraditional Students: Factors Affecting The Choice Of Postsecondary Enrollment And Quality, Shahram Amiri Jan 1993

The College Investment Decision For Nontraditional Students: Factors Affecting The Choice Of Postsecondary Enrollment And Quality, Shahram Amiri

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As the shift in demographics and the aging population of the United States make their presence felt, colleges and universities throughout the country must address the question of supporting the goals of the non-traditional student in higher education. While it is difficult to characterize a "typical non-traditional student," it is important to analyze the role that certain demographic factors play in the student's decision to go to college.;We hypothesize that the non-traditional student's decision to attend college is influenced by several factors that, in broad, general terms, include family background characteristics, the student's demographic profile and aptitude, and external economic …
