Higgins Presents Talk On Bishop Curtis And Beyond, Michael W. Higgins
Michael W. Higgins
On September 23, as part of Sacred Heart University’s commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Michael W. Higgins provided insight into the University’s beginnings and its promising future. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

At Catholic universities we have lofty and ambitious learning outcomes for our graduates. We want to provide our students with the knowledge, ideas, skills, and critical abilities needed to understand} reflect upon, and act with purpose and effect in our increasingly complex, ever-changing, global-world. We want to equip our students with the intellectual abilities, spiritual discernment, and moral and ethical principles that will enable them to distinguish between those things which inspire the mind, satisfy the soul, and advance the human good - and those things which do not. We want to develop in them the intelligence and compassion needed …

Since the Second Vatican Council, lay women and men are assuming greater responsibility for guiding the mission of the Catholic Church in the modern world. This is particularly the case in institutions of Catholic higher education in the United States. The eighteen essays in this volume, based on presentations at a conference sponsored by Sacred Heart University and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, examine the many challenges facing lay leaders of Catholic institutions of higher learning. The volume begins with a report on a detailed study of the background of lay leaders; the essays that follow address such …

Sacred Heart University Press Books
This collection of essays by a variety of educators, scholars, and theologians lays out some of the content behind the term "Catholic intellectual tradition," a tradition that is both a treasury of classic and contemporary texts, including religious and aesthetic products, and a "way of doing things" borne of experience, prayer, and critical reflection. Contributions focus on such topics as the ideal of the Catholic mind, the relationship between Catholicism and other faith traditions, notions of the Catholic artist and intellectual, and future directions for Catholic universities.
