Champs In A Second-Grade Classroom, Amanda Ford
Champs In A Second-Grade Classroom, Amanda Ford
Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning
Classroom management can be a big struggle for some teachers, to the point that some school districts have begun initiatives for the implementation of specific behavior management programs. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of the behavior management program of CHAMPS. The author collected data through student surveys, classroom observations, and teacher and student interviews. After analyzing the data by using a constant comparative method, the author found five major themes. The first theme was the continual reference to CHAMPS expectations within the classroom. The author then found the theme of the …

Teachers And Their Perceptions About Adaptive Skill Training Within An Early Childhood Comprehensive Development Classroom For Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Jennifer R. Lynberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigated teacher perceptions about adaptive skill training within an early childhood comprehensive development classroom for students with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding about adaptive skills from a teacher's perspective. The aims of the study were to help educators understand the role of comfort level, importance of adaptive skills, planning for adaptive skills, and connecting adaptive skills to an academic outcome. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used, and an online survey was completed by 254 special education teachers. The participants that completed the survey were 93% female and on average had …
Embedding Play-Based Learning Into Junior Primary (Year 1 And 2) Curriculum In Wa, Jenny A. Jay, Marianne Knaus
Embedding Play-Based Learning Into Junior Primary (Year 1 And 2) Curriculum In Wa, Jenny A. Jay, Marianne Knaus
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Governments and their policy decisions inevitably influence the pedagogical practices of teachers. There have been considerable curriculum changes and national reforms in Australia with the implementation of two very different national curricula documents in the early childhood sector in the last decade. The political landscape in Western Australia is even more complex with the mandating of the National Quality Standard (NQS) in all public schools from Kindergarten to Year two. The introduction of the NQS has impacted on the teaching and learning in the early years of school, and in particular, the inclusion of play-based teaching strategies. The tensions that …

Preschool Enrollment And Elementary School Achievement In An East Tennessee School District, Derek Voiles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference in achievement scores exists among students based on whether or not they attended preschool as measured by standardized achievement reading-language arts and math scores on the Tennessee Comprehensive Achievement Program assessment for fourth grade students in a single East Tennessee school district. The variables of grade level and preschool attendance were considered. The population consisted of fourth grade students during the 2014-2015 school year. Data were gathered from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program achievement test scores obtained from the 2014-2015 school year and from the school district’s preschool …
The Impact Of Video Self-Reflection On Teacher Practice, Michelle Grantham-Caston
The Impact Of Video Self-Reflection On Teacher Practice, Michelle Grantham-Caston
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this research study was to analyze the teacher’s ability to utilize video self-reflection as a structured learning tool to enhance their teaching practice and CLASS scores. Research has demonstrated that teachers are better able to be self-reflective when provided with a framework (Calandra, Gurvitch, & Lund, 2008). Literature has documented video self-reflection and CLASS as links for growth in children and professional development support for teachers (Pianta, Mashburn, Downer, Hammer, & Justice, 2008). Results from the present study indicated that the teachers became increasingly aware of the CLASS Toddler tool criteria through scoring their own behaviors, which …
Effects Of A Coaching Intervention On Teacher’S Implementation Of Naturalistic Strategies To Promote Communication In Children, Kaitlin J. Dick
Effects Of A Coaching Intervention On Teacher’S Implementation Of Naturalistic Strategies To Promote Communication In Children, Kaitlin J. Dick
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
With accountability on the rise, educators are changing their focus to optimizing instructional strategies in the classroom. Their job performance depends upon their ability to show progress on child outcomes. One way teachers advance this process is by executing more evidence-based practices in their classroom. There is a lack of research in early childhood that report treatment integrity of the treatment package. This study utilized a multicomponent coaching intervention to increasing treatment fidelity of teacher implementation of naturalistic teaching strategies in an early childhood classroom. This coaching intervention could prove to be more efficient and practical for educators. This study …
Re-Generating Research Partnerships In Early Childhood Education: A Non-Idealized Vision, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw, Fikile Nxumalo
Re-Generating Research Partnerships In Early Childhood Education: A Non-Idealized Vision, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw, Fikile Nxumalo
Education Publications
This chapter provides a challenge to positivist notions of partnership in early childhood education, and instead proposes a re-generative posthumanist perspective, based on relationality of partnerships. Specifically, the chapter addresses the troubles and struggles inherited in research partnerships through a non-idealized vision of research partnerships. It experiments with the notions of regenerating ‘change’ and regenerating ‘relationality’. It also addresses the multi-layered aspects of knowledge-in-the-making; non-innocent relations; difficulties of thinking change in research; and the potentialities of conflict and dissension. However, no certainties and closures about research partnerships are provided.
Using An Art Therapy Assessment To Screen For Barriers To Learning In The Primary Grades, Carol Ann Beeman
Using An Art Therapy Assessment To Screen For Barriers To Learning In The Primary Grades, Carol Ann Beeman
Theses and Dissertations
The study examined the use of an art-based, art therapy assessment and accompanying survey to test construct validity of the survey instrument, reliability, and effectiveness as a screening tool in the primary grades, K-2, in a public school, a private, parochial school, and with a comparison group of already identified special education students in another parochial school. The goal was to identify children who may need evaluation or intervention to promote success in the learning environment. Art is a simple, natural way to discover mental functioning through the expressive nature of experience and its underlying physiological and psychological processes. The …

A Toddler's Development: Analyzing "One Who Walks Unsteadily", Valerie Sharie Davis
XULAneXUS
On April 19, 2009, for exactly two hours, I observed a twenty-four month old toddler at her home, with parents' consent, to fulfill an assignment for a Normal Language Development course. The assignment was to observe a child ranging between the infancy stages to three years old. After observing the child, students were instructed to complete a language analysis sample on every word or phrase that the child produced. This sample was conducted by writing down what the child said and comparing it to what linguistic and motor development researchers expected from a child at the approximate age level observed. …

Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe
Kindergarten Readiness: A Checklist For Parents And Teachers, Monica Rose Wolfe
All Graduate Projects
The standards for kindergarten are being raised each year. Kindergarten is no longer a place for play and socializing. Instead, children are expected to read, write and use mathematical concepts. Using the questionnaire to evaluate a child will allow for communication between parents and teachers as to whether or not the child is ready to take on the new challenges of kindergarten. Providing feedback for parents as to what their child needs to work on to be adequately prepared for kindergarten, will help children to be more successful at the beginning of their school years.

Multiple Intelligence Motivational Activities Using Literature For Kindergarten And First Grade Students, Heidi Jo Ann Otis
Multiple Intelligence Motivational Activities Using Literature For Kindergarten And First Grade Students, Heidi Jo Ann Otis
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to identify a set of multiple intelligence activities that foster motivation for reading. These activities were to accompany specific pieces of children's literature. Children who are motivated and spend more time reading become better readers (Gambrell, 1996). The central element for this project was to develop activities for children's literature using Gardner's multiple intelligence theory. Gardner lists those seven intelligences as: Linguistic, logical/mathematical, spatial, music, kinesthetic/body, interpersonal and intrapersonal (Gardner, 1983). By giving young children a variety of intellectual modalities associated with children's literature it was hoped that all students would develop an early …

An Evaluation Of The Kindergarten Program In Chelan, Lois M. Detering
An Evaluation Of The Kindergarten Program In Chelan, Lois M. Detering
Graduate Student Research Papers
Many significant studies of reading readiness were under way at the direction of private, public, or federal funds, thus focusing attention on kindergarten and pre-kindergarten readiness. Because of this, many parents, teachers, and administrators showed keen interest in the possibilities of educating youngsters at the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten age. It was therefore felt that a study of this kind would be pertinent. Specifically, many persons wanted their five-year-olds to attend kindergarten in Chelan, Washington. This attitude was reflected elsewhere and it was decided to make a study of kindergarten programs and their relationships to the program in Chelan. It was …
