Cartoons From The 2000s: The Representation Of Disability And A Culture Of Inclusion, Alessia Rosa, Claudia Chellini
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Representations of diversity and otherness in cartoons offer metaphors for identity that can affect children’s perceptions and attitudes towards the potential and challenges associated with various forms of disability. This contribution analyses a corpus of animations made up of feature films, series, and short films with a focus on how disability is represented. It examines the role that characters with physical or mental disabilities play in the story, the structure of narratives in which disability is presented as an integral part of reality, and the types of disability explored in the stories. The image that emerges is one in which …
Teachers’ Experiences With The Reduction Of Play And Its Impact On Social-Emotional Development And Behavior In The Preschool Setting., Jacqueline Renee Smith
Teachers’ Experiences With The Reduction Of Play And Its Impact On Social-Emotional Development And Behavior In The Preschool Setting., Jacqueline Renee Smith
Student Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative, phenomenological study explored teachers’ experiences with the reduction of play in the preschool setting and its impact on social-emotional development and behavior in the preschool classroom. The problem addressed was the decreasing amount of time spent on play in early childhood education. While play is a developmentally appropriate way for children to develop social-emotional, physical, and cognitive skills, the teachers in East Tennessee are experiencing a decline in play. Deficits in social-emotional skills and behavior affect not only the child but also schools, early childhood centers, teachers, administrators, and other students in the classroom. There are long-term ramifications …
Supporting Teachers In Social Emotional Learning, Olivia Radley
Supporting Teachers In Social Emotional Learning, Olivia Radley
Masters Projects
The development of social emotional skills in children is crucial, yet many teachers lack the necessary training and support to effectively implement social emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom. SEL focuses on essential competencies such as self-regulation, relationship-building, and responsible decision-making that are vital not only for classroom success, but for long-term wellbeing. While teachers have always played a significant role in fostering children’s social and emotional development, research explores the gap in teacher training and preparation for social emotional learning implementation. Effective SEL instruction depends on intentional strategies such as strong classroom management, meaningful relationships with students and families, …

Masters Projects
This project aims to tackle the issue of kindergarten readiness. Chapter 1 focuses on the significant gap in kindergarten preparedness, with many children lacking the academic, social, and emotional skills needed for a successful kindergarten transition. Socioeconomic disparities, lack of access to good early childhood education, and the compounded effect of the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted early learning opportunities and parental engagement have widened this gap. As such, the project presents a Kindergarten Readiness Toolkit that aims to promote young learners' academic and social-emotional skills by providing targeted interventions. The second chapter thoroughly reviews the literature, including the use of …

The Importance Of Developing Social-Emotional Skills In Early Childhood, Jaren Whitney Phillips
Masters Projects
Abstract
This proposal explores the importance of developing social-emotional skills at a young age and the impact it can have on a child’s short-term and long-term success. Social-emotional skills can be developed in the classroom on a daily basis. Teachers can do this by providing a supportive, safe, and caring classroom environment that influences learning and providing opportunities for students to practice and apply their social emotional skills in different settings and situations (Zins et al., 2007; McClelland et al., 2017). Teachers need the proper training on how to effectively implement and embed social-emotional skills in the classroom in all …

How Do Children Learn How To Learn? Promoting Early Development At Home Through Play: A Scoping Review, Annika J. Larson
Senior Theses
Early childhood is a critical time in human development, during which children are discovering and practicing countless skills, from basic motor and language skills to problem-solving, self-regulation, memory, and other foundational abilities like literacy and math skills. From infancy through childhood, play is thought to be the primary condition under which most early skills are developed and perfected. During this time, young children are especially vulnerable to adversity and negative environmental influences due to their brains’ high plasticity; adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact an individual well beyond early childhood, specifically in early skills deficits. Play is known to be a …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications
During a modern era of rising white nationalism and racial reckoning, the opportunity to reimagine the national model for school social work practice was explored in partnership with practitioners, scholars, researchers, and leaders of the profession. It sparked a parallel process of engagement that required the critical analysis of the systemic and structural racism impacting not only our educational communities, but also the historical influences shaping the school social work profession. Like the many antiracist efforts that have come before, the revision process was impacted by a pervasive culture of white supremacy, yet what emerged was an equity-centered model to …
The Power Of Pre-Reading Skills, Amy Vandermeer
The Power Of Pre-Reading Skills, Amy Vandermeer
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Early primary students can struggle with pre-reading skills, and this struggle leads to a lack of reading development as they enter primary grades. Research reveals that factors such as working memory and disorders such as dyslexia influence children's reading development, yet strategies such as orthographic mapping and embodied learning can improve their pre-reading skills. Research has also shown that pre-reading skills are correlated with later reading abilities. This study aims to describe the characteristics of pre-reading skills and explain the impact of pre-reading skills on later reading abilities. Based on a literature review on the impact of pre-reading skills, assessment …

Identifying Universal And Language-Specific Features In Play-Based Writing Of Young Children, Shaya Helbig
Identifying Universal And Language-Specific Features In Play-Based Writing Of Young Children, Shaya Helbig
Dissertations
Young children’s marks when writing consist of universal features such as scribbling and drawing, and language-specific features such as letters or letter-like forms and spaces (Clay, 1979; Puranik & Lonigan, 2011; Rowe & Wilson, 2015; Teale & Sulzby, 1985). It is widely agreed that exposure to words and written language play a pivotal role in children’s writing development (Clay, 1979; Teale & Sulzby, 1986). However, it remains unclear whether children form more complex writing skills through specific developmental stages, and if age plays any part in this progression (Clay, 1979; Justice & Vukelich, 2008; Teale & Sulzby, 1986). The lack …
