The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
This article presents the Collaborative Design Model as a tool for developing collaboration and self-efficacy for preprofessional educators and service providers. As student populations continue to become more diverse, preprofessionals entering the classroom must be prepared to collaborate with colleagues effectively and efficiently to address the variety of needs presented in the classroom. Little research exists on the collaboration among preprofessional teachers and preprofessional occupational therapists. The proposed model provides a method for supporting preprofessionals in collaborating to meet the needs of students at risk for or with disabilities. Initial pilot findings suggest the Collaborative Design Model could potentially increase …
Teacher Perceptions Of The Digital Badge In Kindergarten Reading Attainment, Amy Cooper
Teacher Perceptions Of The Digital Badge In Kindergarten Reading Attainment, Amy Cooper
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Educators are consistently seeking appropriate measures of assessment and guidance tools in the 21st century. Tools in classrooms today are lacking the needs relevant to digital natives. Digital badges are a form of assessment, achievement, and accomplishment that show competencies and growth. This phenomenological research study was conducted to examine the experiences of seven teachers and three principals in a suburban school in a Northeastern state regarding the implementation of the digital badge in early literacy. The analysis of the data showed digital badges as intrinsically engaging, preferred over report cards, with a strong impact on instruction and relationships, validating, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
The library profession is one that serves the educational system of any nation, therefore both the educational and library systems must be in nexus if effective and efficient formulation and implementation of policies will be established. The impact of the library can be felt at all levels in the education sector, starting from the grass root, that is, School libraries in primary and secondary schools to the Academic libraries in the tertiary institutions. Hence the importance of the library in the educational development of a country cannot be over-estimated.
The library policy objectives have not been difficult to identify …

Education Specialties Faculty Publications
In this paper, we explore the complex nature of preparing diverse professionals for authentic, relationship-based care for infants and toddlers in child care. Looking through the eyes of one student caregiver, we travel with her through a semester-long course introducing her to infant care as an integral part of early childhood teacher preparation. We draw on her descriptions of her weekly experiences in an infant room focusing on a key child, her formal reflections in written assignments, and her responses to a series of interview questions once the course was completed to construct a theory of authentic practice through relationship-based …

Assessing Adult Perceptions Of Sexual Behavior In The Early Childhood Setting, Jamie Spencer
M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Research Projects
In recent years, there has been an increase in challenging behavior in early childhood settings
because of “sexual behavior”, making an understanding of healthy development in children crucial to the work of the early childhood educator. This study explores information gathered from early childhood educators throughout the state of Maine to assess adult perceptions, opinions, and attitudes about the concept of sexual behavior in early childhood settings, as well as needs for support. Utilizing an online survey tool, the study gathered feedback from 633 respondents throughout the state of Maine. The study revealed that while 72% of educators are comfortable …

Full Day Play Vs. Part Day Play, Ashley Mcdonald
M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Research Projects
Early education is an essential part of development (Jalongo, Fennimore, Pattnaik, Laverick, Brewster, & Mutuku, 2004), however, there is much debate about what type of program will best meet the needs of young children. Programs have great variation with children attending as little as 12 hours a week to children attending 40 to 50 hours a week. A qualitative research design was used to analyze playful learning within a high quality early education center examining possible differences between a full day program and a part day program. The focus of this study was on the amount of time children spend …
Barriers To Parental Involvement, Emily J. Berry
Barriers To Parental Involvement, Emily J. Berry
M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Research Projects
The research discussed in this paper explores parent and educator perspectives towards family involvement activities, and the barriers that cause lower participation rates. The foundation of this research is built from Bronfenbrenner’s (1977) ecological theory, asserting that children have more meaningful experiences when there is a positive connection between their mesosystems. This study surveys pre-k families regarding their perspective on the importance of parental involvement in school activities. Such activities include class celebrations, family activity nights, parent trainings/workshops, volunteering in the classroom, and attending pre-k parent groups. Parents report on the barriers preventing them from being able to attend school …

The purpose of this research will be to examine the decline of licensed family child care programs in Maine. Information gathered from Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services, (DHHS) Office of Child Care and Family Services, (OCFS) Child Care Licensing Department show a continuous decline of family child care in Maine over the last five years. Programs dropped from 1324 in July 2013 to 1109 in July 2017. (S. Bhuvanagiri, personal communication, July 17, 2018). The research will begin to identify the reasons that have caused the downturn. It will also begin to identify potential supports for family child …
Childminding In Ireland: Attitudes Towards Professionalisation, Miriam O'Regan, Ann Marie Halpenny, Noirin Hayes
Childminding In Ireland: Attitudes Towards Professionalisation, Miriam O'Regan, Ann Marie Halpenny, Noirin Hayes
Articles
In light of rapid changes in the early years sector in Ireland since 2000, questions arise about the professionalism of childminders (family day carers), the vast majority of whom are exempt from regulation. Fewer than 0.1% (<120) of childminders are registered with Tusla, the national regulator, despite the National Childminding Initiative, (NCMI) which has promoted professional, high quality childminding. To investigate current attitudes to NCMI’s process of professionalisation (Brannen and Moss [2003]), among childminders and parents, a cross-sectional study was designed using a mixed-method approach. Specifically an anonymous online survey was conducted with 325 participants, followed by a qualitative World Café forum for 40 members of Childminding Ireland, the national childminding body. Findings from both phases of research revealed many of these childminders were well-qualified and engaged, with a sense of professional identity, seeking a distinctive approach to support childminding. Moreover, both childminder and parent participants value the distinctive characteristics of childminding – close relationships, a nurturing pedagogy, a rich, home environment – to a greater extent than markers of professionalism. These findings call for an innovative approach to childminding in Ireland, one that facilitates an organic development of agentic, professional childminding as part of a competent ECEC system.

Reducing Racial And Gender Implicit Biases: The Effects Of Multicultural Education On A Child’S Preferences And Occupational Aspirations, Bryanna Paskowitz
Human Development Honors Papers
This project explored the effect of reducing implicit racial and gender bias and the impact on children’s occupational preferences and aspirations. Participants included fifty-two children aged three, four, and five years old from the Connecticut College Children’s Program in New London, Connecticut. The initial hypothesis theorized that children, regardless of race and gender, would have a preference towards White and male individuals as being “good or nice,” and for most occupational roles. The children would also have a prejudice against individuals of color as being “naughty or bad,” and for most occupational roles. The other hypothesis theorized that after children …

Investigating Early Childhood Teachers’ Perceptions Of A Preschool Yoga Program, Kenya Wolff, Alicia Stapp
Faculty and Student Publications
© The Author(s) 2019. Yoga for young children has become a growing area of interest in early childhood settings across the United States. Evidence suggests that yoga has the ability to improve young children’s physical development, executive functioning, self-regulation, and can aid in decreasing stress and anxiety. While the scope of research on yoga for young children has primarily focused on the experiences and outcomes of the children who participate, far less is known about the experiences and perceptions of teachers who have engaged in such programs with their students. This study utilized a qualitative case study to investigate teachers’ …

Latent Growth Curve And Latent Change Score Modeling Of Developmental Relationships Between Executive Functioning And Math Achievement In Early Elementary School, Kerry-Ann Lewis Pearcy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study compared latent growth curve (LGC) models and latent change score (LCS) models capabilities in modeling complex data in a development framework. Using the nationally representative ECLS-K:2011 dataset, LGC and LCS models explored the dynamic relationship between executive function and math achievement. The relationship between the two constructs has been extensively examined but little is understood about their dynamic relationship. The findings of this study indicated LCS to be more robust than LGC in modeling complex data and in examining dynamic relationship. The findings also suggested that one of the two executive functioning tasks, Dimensional Change Card Sort …
