Training Early Childhood Educators To Identify Behavior Function And Select Function-Matched Interventions, Laura V. Cox

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Problem behavior in the classroom can have a negative impact not only on the student’s learning but on his or her social interactions and the child may risk rejection by teachers and peers. This study evaluated the effects of a training package delivered to preschool teachers on their ability to identify what may be causing the problem behavior and identify strategies that may reduce problem behavior.

Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of this training package in older age groups or grade levels as well as to other professionals who work with children with problem behavior. Results from this study …

Representation Matters: How Representation In Children's Literature Influences Children Of Different Ethnicities, Taylor Cavalovitch Apr 2016

Representation Matters: How Representation In Children's Literature Influences Children Of Different Ethnicities, Taylor Cavalovitch

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

This action research project explores how the use of representational children’s literature in an elementary classroom might shape the engagement of emergent bilingual students who are underrepresented in the local context. Representational children’s literature is literature that represents students of all backgrounds. Students use this literature as either a window, observing a different perspective, or a mirror, the reader sees himself or herself in the text. Over a period of three weeks during my literacy field experience in the PreK-4 Leading Teacher program, I focused on one participant: a student of Venezuelan heritage who lives in Pittsburgh. Data collection included …

Systemic Solutions To Systemic Problems Of Injustice: Exploring Empathy And Self-Awareness In Preservice Teacher Training And The Preschool To Fourth Grade Classroom, Christina L. Mcelwee Apr 2016

Systemic Solutions To Systemic Problems Of Injustice: Exploring Empathy And Self-Awareness In Preservice Teacher Training And The Preschool To Fourth Grade Classroom, Christina L. Mcelwee

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Social justice issues are systemic problems of inequity that must be dealt with in a systemic way if they are to be resolved; it is my belief that resolution will come through the development of young children via trained preservice teachers, equipped to teach about empathy and inequity while celebrating diversity. If children, ages preschool to fourth grade, become aware of injustices surrounding social justice conflicts, the likelihood of social change occurring increases because of children’s exposure to issues of injustice. Preservice teachers and their future students must cultivate outlooks celebrating diversity and nurturing empathy, self-awareness, critical thinking, and creative …

Preschool students who display social emotional deficits pose challenging issues for families, caregivers and teachers who educate them. In this study, the effectiveness of an assistive technology based treatment package consisting of video self-modeling and behavior management software was investigated to determine if its combined use would result in increased student self-regulation skills. Using a multiple baseline design, three students used the treatment package to increase self-regulation skills. During the investigation, the accuracy to self-identify behaviors, the documentation of desired and undesired behaviors and the overall impact of the treatment package was studied. Interobserver agreement (IOA) was used to determine …

Preschooler Digital Usage And Visual Spatial Performance: Implications For The Classroom, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman Jan 2016

Preschooler Digital Usage And Visual Spatial Performance: Implications For The Classroom, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman

Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications

This research to practice paper summarizes a study focused on typically developing preschooler’s integrated technology usage. Different amounts of usage were found based on parental education, ethnic/racial identity, and SES. Television viewing patterns from a 2010 study were also compared to a 2014 group of children. Preschoolers from the 2014 group were watching similar amounts of television, but also had increased technological device usage. Children had greater total screen time than in the past. Lower maternal education, lower SES, and being from a historically disadvantaged background were associated with greater usage time. Preschoolers with higher reported digital media usage had …

Digital Media And Preschoolers: Implications For Visual Spatial Development, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman

Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications

Preschoolers’ integrated technology usage was examined related to cognitive and visual spatial functioning. The participants consisted of 492 typically developing preschool children. Parent/caregiver reports of children’s television viewing and digital technology usage, and WPPSI-IV intelligence scale scores and Visual Spatial Composite scores were examined. Preschoolers’ screen time was also compared to a previous 2010 group to look for changes in television viewing patterns following an increase in digital device usage. The results provide evidence of an interaction between digital media usage and visual spatial abilities. Preschoolers with higher reported digital media usage had lower WPPSIIV Visual Spatial Composite scores and …

Listen Up: Reflections On The Cdi And Hse Speech And Language Services In Tallaght West: Early Intervention, Speech And Language, Noirin Hayes, Judy Irwin

Reports

The early intervention approach described in this report, which was developed by CDI and evaluated by Dr. Noirin Hayes and Judy Irwin, engages both parents and teachers in a meaningful partnership via a three-pronged approach, whereby the therapist works with the child and the parent/carer and the Early Years practitioner or teacher. We have long recognised in other domains, such as health promotion and youth crime prevention, that no single agency or discipline can fully resolve difficulties and this learning has been integrated here to inform an innovative and effective model that brings added value, minimises stigma and employs an early …

The Arizona Kith And Kin Project Evaluation, Brief #4, Eva Marie Shivers, Charles Yang, Flora Farago

Faculty Publications

Despite the prevalence of family, friend, and neighbor (FFN) child care (NSECE, 2015), relatively little is known about the characteristics of this type of care, quality of care, and the features of effective quality improvement initiatives for FFN care providers. In general, the early childhood field has remained relatively silent about FFN child care in policy and research discourses surrounding child well-being and quality initiatives (Shivers, 2012; Whitebook et al., 2004). The overall goal of the analyses described in this brief, Brief #4 in a series of four, was to explore and analyze FFN providers’ awareness and use of community …

The Association Of Preschool Enrollment And The Predictive Traits Of Special Education Identification, Sarie Elizabeth Ates-Patterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early childhood education (ECE) consists of educational programs that serve children in the preschool years and are designed to improve elementary school performance. Colorado early childhood education programming has two preschool classifications that include Colorado Preschool Program (CPP) which is determined by a student's risk factors, and the State Preschool Special Education (Preschool SPED) program which is determined by the student's identified disability prior to attending elementary school. For the two cohorts who participated in Colorado preschool programming during 2009-2010 school year, special education and demographic extant data are compared in order to study the subsequent identification for special education …
