Approaching Equity: Strategies For Working With Hispanic Students In The Middle School Health Science Classroom, Heather L. Jones

This project provides middle school science teachers with practical classroom strategies for working with Hispanic students. The strategies are built upon national and state recommendations as well as other expert opinions which can be found in the Review of Literature. The strategies align with the Essential Academic Learning Requirements for Washington state. For each strategy, a rationale is provided based on the literature review. In addition, each strategy includes a detailed explanation, along with specific examples. The strategies themselves address environmental, communicative, pedagogical, as well as assessment considerations. Recommendations for implementation are also discussed.

The "Transition Support Program" described in this report is the Western Australian Transition Support Program for students with disabilities, a pilot program funded by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET) under the Transition Support Component of the National Equity Program for Schools.

Determining The Educational Quality And Equity Among Students In Order To Set Goals As Part Of The Effective Schooling Process, Annie L. Justice

Two hundred-forty-seven elementary school students in selected school district in Georgia served as subjects for this study. The population mean scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in Reading, Language Arts, and Math were used in the assessment. A four-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) model was used to determine the educational quality and equity among students in order to set goals as part of the effective schooling process. Significant differences were found at the .05 level as a function of gender and race.

A Demographic Study Of Emotionally Disturbed Hispanic Students Enrolled In The Public Schools Of Texas, Luis Manuel Mancha

A demographic study was made of the public schools in Texas and it was found that the majority of the emotionally disturbed students are White, non-Hispanic. At the same time, the results of the study indicated that the majority of the public schools in Texas are serving less than two percent of the total student enrollment with programs for the emotionally disturbed. Further examination indicated that overall, the public schools in Texas are failing to serve 12% of the student population with special education services. The four purposes of this study are: (1) to gain a better understanding of the characteristics, problems, and attitudes of the culturally deprived youth in our society; (2) to determine how Seattle, by better understanding these characteristics, problems, and attitudes, might meet the educational needs of the culturally deprived child; (3) to explore what other large cities in the United States have done in meeting the educational needs of the culturally deprived child; and (4) to describe how Seattle has used the experiences of other large cities in helping it to formulate its educational program for the culturally deprived child.

Our culture presents many barriers that prevent women from using their intellect for the greatest good. As counselors, we need to begin freeing ourselves from the limits of narrow and inappropriately differentiated masculine and feminine roles. An awareness of the reasons for and the extent of these prejudices will help to understand ourselves and thus the people with whom we work. Through understanding the pressures of our society on the jobs we do, we can gain knowledge enabling us to use more of our intellectual resources and thus to plan better for today while looking to the future.
