Critical Pedagogy In Classroom Discourse, Loukia K. Sarroub, Sabrina Quadros Jan 2015

Critical Pedagogy In Classroom Discourse, Loukia K. Sarroub, Sabrina Quadros

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The classroom is a unique discursive space for the enactment of critical pedagogy. In some ways, all classroom discourse is critical because it is inherently political, and at the heart of critical pedagogy is an implicit understanding that power is negotiated daily by teachers and students. Historically, critical pedagogy is rooted in schools of thought that have emphasized the individual and the self in relation and in contrast to society, sociocultural and ideological forces, and economic factors and social progress. In addressing conceptualizations in Orthodox Marxism (with Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim) in the mid-19th century and the …

Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano Aug 2014

Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

At the risk of opening with a cliché statement- at the heart of the most effective mentor is a burning passion. The fuel for this passion is a desire to convince, not just try to, but actually convince your mentee that you care about their success (be it in the classroom, career, or personal life). I am guilty of believing in, and living by, this cliché. However, despite passion being my primary motivator, I am not unwilling to admit that rationale for mentoring can sometimes transcend this ethically normative line of thinking. I believe that there are also sometimes quantitative, …

Stuck Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of College Students Who Do Not Request Accommodations, Denise P. Reid May 2014

Stuck Between A Rock And A Hard Place: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of College Students Who Do Not Request Accommodations, Denise P. Reid

Educational Studies Dissertations

For this phenomenological study, thirteen participants from two private universities, located in the western region of the United States shared their lived experiences of being a college student who does not request accommodations. The author used recursive analysis to analyze qualitative data from semistructured interviews. Initial codes were combined to create interconnected families of codes. A second level of analysis resulted in seven spaces in which participants described their lived experiences. Findings suggest participants experience various tensions, ranging from incompatible options to competing perspectives, as they negotiate their identify and environment. including the principle of opportunity cost. Recommendations for college …

Negative Social Constructions Of “Disability” And How Individuals With Disability May Better Transition From Childhood To Adulthood In The United States, Estella Li May 2014

Negative Social Constructions Of “Disability” And How Individuals With Disability May Better Transition From Childhood To Adulthood In The United States, Estella Li

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The objectives of this study are to assess the meaning of “disability” through etic and emic frameworks, to bring awareness to effects that negative social constructions have on individuals with disabilities’ self-worth, and to find more accommodating approaches to not only help individuals with disabilities grow in inclusive classrooms, but to also help them apply confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills to their community after the age of 21 in the United States. Since the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) fall short of providing individuals with disabilities adequate services and support for adulthood …

This paper evaluates the accessibility of selected field and laboratory high school science activities, and provides suggestions for increasing accessibility for students with disabilities. Becoming An Inclusive Educator: Applying Deleuze & Guattari To Teacher Education, Loraine M. Mckay, Suzanne Carrington, Radha Iyer Mar 2014

Becoming An Inclusive Educator: Applying Deleuze & Guattari To Teacher Education, Loraine M. Mckay, Suzanne Carrington, Radha Iyer

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

New ways of thinking are required in teacher education to promote beginning teachers as change agents in education. Twenty years after the Salamanca Statement (UNESCO, 1994) that called for schools to provide equitable opportunities for all children, teaching practices in many classrooms are informed by the deficit view of learning. Beginning teachers need to be prepared to challenge the ideological influences that operate in schools. Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987) model of the rhizome is used to report one beginning teacher’s journey as she learnt to negotiate structural and personal obstacles to create an inclusive learning environment. Data from reflective diaries, …

The Impact And Effectiveness Of Student-Centered Classroom Structure, Amie P. Westberg Feb 2014

The Impact And Effectiveness Of Student-Centered Classroom Structure, Amie P. Westberg

Mathematics Graduate Theses

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of student-centered learning as an alternative classroom structure. It is important that we continually reflect on our teaching methods and explore alternatives that can help give our students the best chance to succeed. While the literature is mixed with regard to which classroom style is best, there are many sources showing the benefits of student-centered instruction over a strictly teacher- centered classroom. Sources also showed that teachers do not need to choose exclusively one style of teaching, and that a blended classroom using a variety of teaching styles can be …
