Syracuse University Library and Access partnered to provide library orientations to six Syracuse University students who have developmental disabilities. Access is a service that supports college course attendance for students who have developmental or cognitive disabilities. Students with developmental disabilities are being included in college life more and more. As this occurs, academic libraries will be providing more services to this population. We hope Syracuse University’s experience will be useful for other libraries to build on as they develop services. Additionally, we discuss opportunities to improve services for all students by focusing on students with developmental disabilities.

Data reveal that the largest increase in identified disabilities of incoming college freshmen are in the area of learning disabilities. Affirmative action has become an increasingly important topic in higher education because colleges and universities are key battlegrounds regarding how affirmative action policies are enacted. Senior-level higher education administrators have historically taken the lead in shaping affirmative action policies in higher education, and knowing their own community's standpoints on the policies could assist them in deciding how to proceed in defending affirmative action in the face of increasing opposition.

Status Of Women In Higher Education: A Metanalysis Of Institutional Reports, Kathleen Brittamart Watters, Carolyn Ridenour

The authors examined twenty-one institutional reports on the status of women on American college and university campuses. The analysis revealed a dominant discourse of women positioned as dependent on men. Among the five emergent themes included, first, the reality that women were marginalized on these campuses and second, overrepresented in lower power positions. Third, evidence suggested an unequal distribution of salary and perquisites by gender. Fourth, adopting policies toward equity can lessen gender discrimination; however, not with a lack of a strong public and visible commitment to equity by campus leadership, the fifth theme. While the number of job openings within the academic ranks of sport management continues to prosper, the number of women filling these positions remains low. Grappendorf and Lough (2003) reported that women represent only 25 % of professors who hold membership in NASSM, and within doctoral sport management programs, Jisha and Pitts (2004) reported that most students are Caucasian males in their early thirties. Likewise, Morin and Grappendorf (2004) found doctoral sport management students to be 65 % men and 62 % Caucasian. This study identified and examined the service variable combination(s) provided by Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO program that had a statistically significant relationship with program participants’ academic performance and retention. SSS is a federally funded program designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of undergraduate first-generation, low-income, disabled college students. While SSS has played a significant role in the retention of disadvantaged students, scarce empirical research exist which examine the combination of SSS services that affect students’ academic performance and retention. This qualitative case study investigates the nature and role of a college mentor in facilitating the metacognitive development of college students with learning disabilities (LD). The researcher used three primary sources to triangulate the data for the inquiry: individual interviews with a mentor of college students with LD and three of her students; observations of sessions between the mentor and her students; and, documents from student files. The qualitative case study was conducted at Curry College. This site was chosen because of the specialized program for students with learning disabilities at this college.

This study examined the utilization of speech recognition programs by five college students with learning difficulties. A qualitative approach was implemented over the course of two semesters, Fall 2003 and Spring 2004, to: (a) ascertain students' perspectives on speech recognition, and (b) understand how students used speech recognition programs as a tool to meet the academic demands of postsecondary education. Data collection for this study included interviews, participant observations, field notes, videotape, and course assignments. What are the consequences of this teaching-learning situation when graduate students in a Department of Educational Leadership are enrolled in a course on cultural diversity? Might the words on the computer screen be completely unrelated to the humanity, personality, style, interpersonal behaviors, and dispositions of the student writing them, as Menand suggests? Or, might the detachment provide a security in which the most honest and unadulterated discourse can be shared between teacher and students, as some proponents hope? People with disabilities are just one of the groups designated for special attention in relation to equity in postsecondary education. This paper explores the way in which policies that provide academic accommodation for students disabled by chronic illness unfold in practice. As part of the administrative regime of the university, these policies are typically designed to reconcile the interests and relevances of the law with the interests and relevances of the academy. Problem. Learning disabled (LD) college students are attempting college in unprecedented numbers. This study explores the experiences of four graduating college students to determine how they managed their disability in the educational environment that has provided them with much difficulty for many years.

Method. A qualitative case study design with purposive sampling was used for this study. Over 9 months, four female college students, identified as learning disabled, were interviewed. Students with LD may show deficiencies in selective attention, both visual and auditory, which can affect interpretation of social situations. The Stroop Test is often used to gauge selective attention to congruent and incongruent visual stimuli. This report was commissioned by the Institute of Applied Language Studies of the Edith Cowan University in April 1991. Funds had been made available to Edith Cowan by the Department of Employment Education and Training for the 1991 academic year to survey the access to higher education of disadvantaged people in rural areas of Western Australia. Funds were also available to provide for a pilot Bridging Program for disadvantaged persons to enable their entry to courses at post secondary education level.
