Containing The Jeremiad: Understanding Paradigms Of Anxiety In Global Climate Change Experience, Brian Glaser

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This essay uses Bion’s concept of “containing” to read the psychological dynamics of jeremiads about global climate change, arguing that their structure reveals a strategy of communication that may be useful for more broadly raising awareness about this challenging state of the planet. More specifically, I argue that contemporary global climate change jeremiads have a structure that first elicits alarm and then moves to discuss solutions, and that this structure may be beneficial to those who are awakening to the reality of global climate change by rendering anxiety bearable and therefore open to purposive and creative response.

Writing About Wolves: Using Ecocomposition Pedagogy To Teach Social Justice In A Theme-Based Composition Course, Michael S. Geary

Elements of ecocomposition are employed to construct a course that uses the relationship between wolves and humans as a social justice metaphor. Students explore how mythmaking leads to dire consequences for any population being exploited. This approach to teaching first year composition allows students to acquire new knowledge about conservationism while focusing on developing their critical reading, writing, and researching skills.

The authors examined the research and activism of 10th graders (ages 15–16) involved in a youth participatory action research project in a course in qualitative research at their small public school in New York City, New York. The authors, a classroom researcher and a high school teacher, looked closely at how the youth researchers used photography, collage, and videography to transform their school hallways into a space for critical conversations about race and gender. The authors examined how the hallways became a civic space shaped by collective youth resistance, multimodal counterstories, and negotiated civic engagement.

In order to develop pedagogies around racial literacy, we must first define the goals and bounds of racial literacy as praxis. In this paper, I synthesize the findings of a year-long teacher research project to explore the significance of racial literacy in the college composition classroom. Drawing from existing scholarship and my own research into racial literacy instruction, I offer four visions of racial literacy in the English classroom, the last of which is Racial Literacy as Literacy. In this paper, I propose literacy practices that further shift us from subject-object dichotomies and exclusive language practices to a focus on relationships and multimodality. Based in large part upon Indigenous Scholar Shawn Wilson’s concept of relationality, I define a relational literacy wherein we counter an undue abstraction of the environment by mapping interspecies relationships and placing them within kinship narratives.

The purpose of this research was to examine the organization and management of a community-driven string music program under the direction of a parent-run board. This descriptive single-case study focused on an elementary public school, kindergarten through eighth grade, located in a middle-to-upper-class suburb in a metropolitan area in the Midwest. The research question focused on how the collaborative efforts among the adult contributors (school district administrators, parent-run board members, music teachers, and parents) influenced the organization and management of the program. What are the linguistic resources for teachers who pray in contemporary Catholic school classrooms? This article considers the intersections of prayer and language practice, and I make central two arguments. The first is that educational prayer—a particular type of teacher-led extemporaneous prayer in Catholic schools—is a linguistic phenomenon, a highly-flexible set of linguistic resources, captured within a special interactional frame marked by ambiguous boundaries which contains both prescribed formulaic linguistic properties and those which allow the performer to attend to real time classroom contingencies. Describing the situation of the street homeless in Metro Manila, the underlying causes of their condition and the – unfortunately still inadequate- responses of the government. Second, we review our, and hopefully also the Philippine Church’s, motivation and inspiration to engage in this kind of service. What resources, perspectives and experiences can we draw from formal Catholic Social Teaching and broader Catholic social thought to help us understand and interpret street homelessness in a global context? This article is intended to be an invitation to share narratives of hospitality on the ground vis-à-vis the problem of homelessness in the global world. Unlike top-down approaches, there are no clear principles to be applied; only concrete stories with all their frictions, ambiguities and difficulties hoping that God’s inspiration can reveal itself on the rough grounds where people walk in fidelity to the Gospel.

The ecclesiological priority of cultivating the art of “walking with” the vulnerable and marginalized as informed by these ecclesiological conversations, especially regarding those “with neither den nor nest” (Mt 8:20), the homeless who can sometimes seem alone in the streets, but are always journeying with the human family (and thus the Church, of which many of our unhoused brothers and sisters are a part) through history. As Vincent puts it, the communal dimension of living the Gospel together “is the wine that cheers and strengthens travelers along this narrow path of Jesus Christ.”

Homelessness is a complex, global and growing phenomenon, and street homelessness is its most visible aspect. These children, men and women who live on the streets are, in the words of the Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison, “the world tribe of the dispossessed/outside the halls of plenty/ looking in”. This article explores both the specific treatment of homelessness in Catholic social teaching and the ethical principles in Catholic social teaching that can be brought to bear on analysis, advocacy, and action in the area of homelessness.

Depaul Slovensko (Slovakia), a non-profit organization, was established as a response to the unreasonable dying of homeless people on the streets of Bratislava in the winter 2005/2006 and the absence of accommodation for them.
