Citizenship Education In The Social Science Subjects: An Analysis Of The Teacher Education Curriculum For Secondary Schools, Aaron T. Sigauke
Citizenship Education In The Social Science Subjects: An Analysis Of The Teacher Education Curriculum For Secondary Schools, Aaron T. Sigauke
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Citizenship education is widely acknowledged as a necessary part of the school curriculum for various reasons. For young people, it is assumed that citizenship can best be learnt through the school curriculum. This means that teachers need to thoroughly understand what citizenship means and how to pass this knowledge on to students.
This paper examines the nature of civics and citizenship education offered in the social sciences teacher education program at a teacher education institution in Australia. It analyses ten social science subject syllabuses to find out how pre-service teachers are trained about teaching citizenship education in schools when they …

Literacy Coaching Roles In Diverse Contexts Of Teaching And Learning: New Ways Of Working, Lisa J. Van Leent, Beryl Exley
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
As the demands placed on the literacy coach have evolved, so too have the roles of these educational providers who are often responsible for working with school teams to turn around student performance on standardized literacy tests. One literacy coach based in a Queensland primary school recounts her experiences via open-ended interview over a two year period. We offer a theorisation of the newways of working as a literacy coach in a context of teaching and learning marked by diversity.

The Influence Of An Activity-Based Explicit Approach On The Turkish Prospective Science Teachers’ Conceptions Of The Nature Of Science, Suat Celik, Samih Bayrakceken
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an activity-based explicit nature of science (NOS) instruction undertaken in the context of a “Science, Technology and Society” course on the prospective science teachers’ (PSTs’) understandings of NOS. In this course, social science based inquiry activities were used to as a context to lead reflection and explicit discussions and project based learning approach (PBL) was used to model an active student centred NOS teaching and learning. Participants were 36 senior PSTs. An adopted form of VNOS questionnaire along with semi-structured interviews was used to assess participants’ conceptions before and …
Putting ‘Maori’ In The Mainstream: Student Teachers' Reflections Of A Culturally Relevant Pedogogy, Steven S. Sexton
Putting ‘Maori’ In The Mainstream: Student Teachers' Reflections Of A Culturally Relevant Pedogogy, Steven S. Sexton
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper reports on student teachers experiences of an education program that was explicitly designed to be grounded in both Kaupapa Māori and mainstream pedagogy. This program started from the Kaupapa Māori view to be Māori as Māori. This was then supported by mainstream epistemology of New Zealand focused good teaching practice. A Kaupapa Māori approach was taken in this qualitative study that used participant driven spiral discourse. The paper suggests that this combined Kaupapa Māori and mainstream approach allowed these student teachers to find their place in education. Conclusions suggest that a culturally relevant pedagogy modeled as good teaching …

Locating Child Protection In Preservice Teacher Education, Kerryann Walsh, Louise Laskey, Elspeth Mcinnes, Ann Farrell, Ben Mathews, Freda Briggs
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
A recent report delivered by the Australian Centre for Child Protection has highlighted the need for empirical evidence of effective pedagogies for supporting teaching and learning of child protection content in Australian teacher education programs (Arnold & Maio-Taddeo, 2007). This paper advances this call by presenting case study accounts of different approaches to teaching child protection content in University-based teacher education programs across three Australian States. These different cases provide a basis for understanding existing strategies as an important precursor to improving practice. Although preschool, primary and secondary schools have been involved in efforts to protect children from abuse and …

The Fourth R : Reality Construction And The Sociology Of Knowledge, Prolegomena To Social Studies Curriculum Theory, P. Reynolds
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The nineteen sixties were marked by a revival of interest In the theory of curriculum construction and innovation which was derived from a psychological perspective. However, recent developments would seem to suggest a growing consciousness of the need for a sociological perspective on curriculum theory. This paper represents explorations within the wide field of the sociology of knowledge in an attempt to isolate the main issues of confl ict and controversy.
Training Teachers To Facilitate Inquiry, J. H. Lake
Training Teachers To Facilitate Inquiry, J. H. Lake
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Within the broad context of the topic Pre-Service and In-Service Education, I have decided to focus my attention on one rather narrow aspect of the pre-service education of primary school teachers. The topic which I want to consider is one which I have called " Training Teachers to Facilitate Inquiry " The examples which I ' ll use are drawn primarily from the broad field of primary science education. However since the type of intellectual activity involved in inquiry is desired in all areas of the primary school curriculum, I trust that what I have to say will have application …
