Teacher Education And The Politics Of Engagement: The Case For Democratic Schooling, Henry A. Giroux, Peter Mclaren Jan 1986

Teacher Education And The Politics Of Engagement: The Case For Democratic Schooling, Henry A. Giroux, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Henry A. Giroux and Peter McLaren argue that many of the recently recommended public school reforms either sidestep or abandon the principles underlying education for a democratic citizenry developed by John Dewey and others in the early part of this century. Yet, Giroux and McLaren believe that this historical precedent suggests a way of reconceptualizing teaching and public schooling which revives the values of democratic citizenship and social justice. They demonstrate that teachers, as "transformative intellectuals," can reclaim space in schools for the exercise of critical citizenship via an ethical and political discourse that recasts, in emancipatory terms, the relationships …

The Quality Of Public Education In Boston: An Assessment And Some Recommendations, Karen Seashore Louis Feb 1983

The Quality Of Public Education In Boston: An Assessment And Some Recommendations, Karen Seashore Louis

Center for Survey Research Publications

Motivation, self-esteem, achievement and the development of tolerance and acceptance of others -- these are the goals that most, like Crain, et al., have come to accept as legitimate objectives of public schooling. Yet, there is substantial opinion that the public schools of Boston have been unable to achieve standards in these areas that are acceptable to the public, the students who occupy the schools, and the professionals who run them. For example, a recent survey of Boston residents' attitudes toward the schools indicates that approximately 3/4 of all respondents -- irrespective of race, or whether there were any school …

Perception Of A University: A Study Of How Parents Develop Preferences For An Institution Of Higher Education, Carl Donald Hadsell Jan 1982

Perception Of A University: A Study Of How Parents Develop Preferences For An Institution Of Higher Education, Carl Donald Hadsell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As documented in previous research, parents are an important influence in their child’s college selection process. However, little attention had been given to how parents themselves develop perceptions of or preferences for specific colleges under consideration. This study’s research design tested the null hypothesis:

"THERE EXISTS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARENT(S) OF IN-STATE STUDENTS AND PARENT(S) OF OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS IN THEIR FORMATION OF PERCEPTIONS AND PREFERENCES FOR WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY (WVU)."

A sample was drawn from a general population that consisted of the following three categories of students who showed interest in WVU for Fall, 1981:

  1. High school seniors who only …

Institutional Self Study: Standard 11. Research, Wku University Senate

Faculty Senate

Western Kentucky University offers an educational program that emphasizes teaching, research and public service. Research is accomplished in two ways.

The first process is directly sponsored by the University through faculty research grants. These grants are supported by normal departmental efforts to provide an atmosphere for faculty/student involvement in developing and initiating new ideas, technology, and ares of investigation. The second process is that of externally sponsored grant and contract research. Standard 11 discusses both types of funding.

Although there have been some shifts in emphasis during the period studied, certain faculty members have a constant record of significant contributions …

Grades, Grading, And The Law, Nicholas George Evans Jan 1980

Grades, Grading, And The Law, Nicholas George Evans

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The problem is to devise for institutions of higher learning a model policy regarding grades and grading practices, specifically with respect to (1) grade appeal procedures, including instructor rights and student rights; (2) methods of determining grades; (3) definitions of grades; (4) responsibility for assigning grades; and (5) cheating regulations insofar as they affect grading policies. A model policy should assist colleges and universities in achieving conformity with recent court decisions and avoiding the many problems associated with litigation. At the same time, institutions should then be able to maintain their academic standards and provide academic fairness for all students. …

Two Papers Delivered At A Symposium, "The Response Of Society To Unusual And Extreme Pressure Groups," Presented At Indiana University School Of Law, Sidney Hook, Michael I. Sovern

IUSTITIA

The following articles by Professor Hook and Dean Sovern are derived from talks delivered at a symposium, "The Response of Society to Unusual and Extreme Pressure Groups," presented at Indiana University School of Law on November 6, 1970. While the door has apparently closed upon the period of ghetto and campus riots of the la te six ties and early seven ties, the fundamental issues of human righ ts which they raised remain unresolved. The symposium attempted to assess the origins, consequences, and remedies for these conflicts. The recent confrontation between American Indians and federal troops at Wounded Knee, South …

The United States Army Dependents Schools In Germany, Edward L. Treick Aug 1957

The United States Army Dependents Schools In Germany, Edward L. Treick

All Master's Theses

Never before in the history of the world has one country spent so much time and money in an attempt to educate all of its citizens. The United. States government realizes that the service personnel work better and are happier if their families can be with them. The men that make the laws also know that their children must be educated, hence this great overseas school system was initiated in the various services.

Building A Curriculum For The Rineyville School, H. L. Perkins Aug 1954

Building A Curriculum For The Rineyville School, H. L. Perkins

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

I shall approach this study, both from a survey of the vocation that the students have followed when out of school, and by what they have recommended to be offered in high school. By listing the subjects most needed when out in life, and also a list of the subjects that they would take, should they have their high school days to go over again, should help us to determine just what curriculum to offer.
