Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to provide sufficient data for determining whether the accounting curriculum in the Grand Rapids Public Schools is providing the training needed by entry-level accounting/bookkeeping/recordkeeping employees for the job tasks defined in the Michigan Department of Education Recommended Minimum Vocational/Technical Program Performance Objectives for Bookkeepers, and to provide data for possible revision of the curriculum.

The need for a more comprehensive education in the secondary school is a need which no one will deny; and as reading is the primary means through which most formal education takes place, the need for expert readers is ever-present. The tragedy of so many high school students graduating without having mastered the skill of reading reminds us that schools are not succeeding in its task of educating. As illustrated by the title, this field experience included two major areas: (1) an administrative internship and (2) the development of a high school curriculum guide and the updating of course descriptions for the author's school district.

The administrative internship was established for the purpose of giving the author as much first-hand administrative experience as possible. It involved the author (then a teacher at the high school) working during his preparation period each day in the high school office under the direction of the principal. One of the many jobs that the high school guidance counselor may find himself or herself doing is that of curriculum planner.

The objective of this paper is to construct a handbook for conducting a mini course program in Kewanee High School. This handbook can be adopted to set up a mini course program in any educational environment. With only a little modification, a successful program may be set up in a larger or smaller school system. It can also be used as a model for a junior high school or grade school program.
