The purpose of this project was to develop a model curriculum for selected physical education adaptations for student with special needs, in alignment with Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR's). To accomplish this purpose, a review of selected literature was conducted. Additionally, related information from selected sources was obtained and analyzed. The model curriculum was developed for implementation in the Ellensburg School District in the 2002-2003 school year.

A middle school physical education program designed to integrate fitness skills and lifetime activities into the physical education curriculum was implemented. Ways to improve fitness, increase participation, improve skills, provide competition and cooperation, and develop knowledge and values related to physical activity were researched and implemented. A curriculum guide from first quarter through fourth quarter was provided with expected student outcomes identified. An explanation of the rationale for conducting each of the separate activities in any modified format was stated. A handbook of fitness and lifetime activities was provided as a resource for other physical education teachers.

The benefits of exploring, understanding, and balancing the social, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions in one's life were researched. The research suggests that providing students in health education classrooms with meaningful avenues to learn about these dimensions within themselves would lead to higher levels of wellness and an overall higher quality of life. A handbook for educators was created to supplement parts of the existing curriculum, as well as show readers that this type of supplemental health handbook can be created by anyone to be used with any type of health curriculum. Motivating Marginalized Youth Through Health Related Service-Learning, Jane Klara Miller

The project provides secondary health teachers who work with marginalized youth with a handbook of service-learning ideas in six units to incorporate into the curriculum. The handbook allows students to utilize the skills they have learned in the classroom by participating in service-learning activities in their community. Students involved in all stages of the service-learning process gain confidence to take ownership of the program allowing for success. By connecting the community and schools through learning, students are given the opportunity to explore their talents, get to know their communities, strengthen developmental assets and learn from one another.

There are needs for keeping track of students' growth, development, maturation, goals, and accomplishments during their school experience. This project was developed to achieve those items at the middle school level. A student will be responsible to fill out a personal profile, record yearly goals, daily activities, health grades, and the physical fitness test data all in the health and fitness portfolio. The portfolio will allow students to take ownership in the program and motivate them to improve on health and fitness activities every year.

This project was created to supply the middle school level with a health and fitness curriculum. It has three separate chapters, with each chapter containing four lessons. The chapters cover basic health, nutrition, and physical fitness. The curriculum supplies information for the teacher, forms and worksheets for the students, and assessments to be used with the curriculum. This curriculum is intended to accompany a physical education class.
