Anxiety has been considered one of the main obstacles in second language learning in instruction-based contexts. During the last few decades, many scholars have tried to shed light on different aspects of this phenomenon. This literature review clarifies previous scholarly works and covers some of the most significant empirical studies conducted in this field. With contemporary events that have spotlighted social injustices, including the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States and the COVID-19 pandemic, any discussion of child development should take into account the diverse experiences of children facing injustice. In this article, I focus on social justice as it pertains to child development and how this topic has been addressed in literature targeted at students of child development theory. Serving as a synthesis of previously published studies and digests, this paper focuses on Southeast Asian refugees in America to address the complex interaction between refugee-learners’ ongoing construction of identity and the ESL environment. Drawing on a wealth of historical and contemporary research on one of America’s most prominent refugee populations, this exploration highlights the traits that constitute Southeast Asians as a unique group of learners due to their shared histories of trauma; social, cultural and religious influences; and ongoing sociocultural and linguistic negotiations of identity during resettlement. Medicins sans Frontiers estimates that twenty-five per cent of new asylum-seeking arrivals in Athens in 2016 were women [1]. Despite the sizable number of women asylum seekers arriving in Athens, women’s voices are often excluded from research on refugee needs. This research sought to understand the needs of women asylum seekers in Athens through the collection of qualitative data on their needs and experiences upon arriving in Athens. Twelve women from Syria, Afghanistan and other countries (background withheld for confidentiality) participated. Exploring Linguistic Space Occupied By The Teachers And Students Of An Esl Classroom In Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan: Comparisons Across Gender, Zaheer Abbas, Musa Ali, Safeer Hussain

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Classroom talk plays a key role in language learning especially in English as second language (ESL) classrooms. Therefore, in this study the linguistic space occupied by the teacher and students in an ESL classroom has been investigated. A descriptive and exploratory approach was employed and videotaping was used for data collection during five consecutive classroom lessons. Results revealed that the teacher occupied most of the linguistics space (60%) as compared to the students (40%). The average word count of boys (56%) was comparatively higher than that of girls’ word count (44%). This study reports important insights into the patterns of …
