“We believe it is the duty of both policy makers and educators to identify qualified minority youth and place them in channels that ensure success.” The ultimate objective of any college minority recruitment and retention effort should be to train and cultivate qualified students of color for leadership in their community, as well as the general society. The existence of special problems and conditions within certain communities is well documented. Although the success of university-community collaboration efforts varies from one community to the next, most college officials nonetheless find themselves calling for greater representation and participation. This workshop will present the …

There are gestures and facial expressions that replace words and are immediately understood by natives of each country. The same signs may exist in another culture and have different meanings. Although these cultural traits are very simple, they must be performed very accurately; otherwise they are as meaningless as a mispronounced word.

The phoneme /1/ (as calle=street, apellido=last name, Have= key or caballo= horse) has disappeared in many zones of Spanish America to give place to the "yeismo", a linguistic phenomenon characterized by the predominance of the /y/ over other phonemes like /1/. Because of this, the word calle is pronounced caye, apellido=apeyido, Ilave=yave and caballo=cabayo.

The Magnitude And Causes Of Dropout In Malawi: A Study Of Chiradzulu District, Christopher Winston Naunje

Master's Capstone Projects

Dropout is one of the problems many public education systems face all around the world. In Malm-vi, the problem worsened after l994 when primary education was made free and an influx of children came into the system. Soon after, the children started to quit. It is estimated that about 10 per cent of the children who were enrolled into primary school that year dropped out during the first six months of the school year. This trend is still going on, sometimes with as little as 25 percent completion rate (to the last class of the cycle).

The study sought to …

This project combined an extensive literature review, the creation of a practitioners manual and teaching materials, as well as the presentation of the ideas at a regional conference for Christian early childhood educators. For the literature review, I chose writers who dealt with multicultural education in general (such as Nieto, Bennett, and Banks), with Christian multiculturalism (such as Wilkerson, and Breckenridge), and also with those that wrote about how to affirm diversity and promote tolerance in early childhood education (Derman-Sparks, Spodek, Brown, Vold). I brought these three areas together in the practitioners manual, a seventy-page practical resource targeted for Christian …

"Like Everybody Else": Equalizing Educational Opportunity For English Language Learners, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2004

"Like Everybody Else": Equalizing Educational Opportunity For English Language Learners, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Equal educational opportunity for all students has long been a goal of public education in the United States. Realizing equality of educational opportunity for English language learners (ELLs), however, has proven to be a difficult task. This article examines 1 high school community's perception of educational opportunity and its approach to equalizing it. The findings reveal a community-wide endorsement of a policy of equal treatment for equalizing educational opportunity. This policy of difference blindness, however, was found to produce inequities for ELLs in at least 2 ways: restricted access to course content and inaccurate assessment and grading. Although teacher participants …

Five Things Most People Believe About American Education That Are Wrong, David E. Drew Jan 2004

Five Things Most People Believe About American Education That Are Wrong, David E. Drew

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Will Rogers said, "People's ignorance isn't the problem; it's what they know for sure that isn't true." One reason that reform of our educational system often fails is that every politician and voter holds strong opinions about American schools. After all, they all went through the school system. Some of those opinions are simply wrong.
