We Could Shape It: Organizing For Asian Pacific American Student Empowerment, Peter Nien-Chu Kiang
We Could Shape It: Organizing For Asian Pacific American Student Empowerment, Peter Nien-Chu Kiang
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
With the doubling of the school-age population of Asian Pacific Americans during the 1990s, the unmet needs of Asian Pacific Americans are escalating dramatically in schools throughout the country. In most settings, teachers, counselors, and administrators do not share the ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds of their Asian Pacific American students. Constrained by limited resources, an increasingly hostile, anti-immigrant climate, and their own stereotypical assumptions, educators have been unable to respond effectively to the full range of academic, social, and personal challenges that face growing numbers of Asian Pacific American students.

Attention teachers! We are entering the age of technology! As many of us are just becoming acquainted with e-mail and the internet, we struggle to keep up with our more computer-literate students, who seem more adept with a keyboard than a pencil. Although the almighty "information superhighway" may seem intimidating, it holds great treasures of information that we, as foreign language teachers, can use to bring culture to life.
A Study Of Why Some Learners Are More Successful Than Others At Acquiring A Second Language: The Roles Of Personality, Attitude & Motivation, Azah Yusof
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to convey and to support my belief that learners' affective domain, which consist of their personalities, attitudes, and motivation are responsible for causing the variation in the levels of second language proficiency of second language learners. My concern is to point out or support others who believe that second language learners are not machines that are able and willing to be programmed; they have feelings and attitudes which in turn govern their personalities and motivation. I also believe that the main focus of second language teaching should be on the "persons" learning the language, …

A Need For A Paradigm Shift In Today's Race Relations And Diversity Education, Franklin Titus Thompson
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Although the ranks of human relations change agents have been temporarily depleted, there is training available for front-line diversity educators. “Changeagents do not have to always be born. They can also be taught.”
A Quarter In Lynden’S Esl 40: Process And Product, Justin T. (Justin Taylor) Maggart
A Quarter In Lynden’S Esl 40: Process And Product, Justin T. (Justin Taylor) Maggart
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
As is indicated in the title, the hard copy of my Senior Project breaks down into two parts: process and product. The 'process' is represented by my Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Practicum Journal. This journal reflects the thoughts and feelings that I experienced during my first longterm exposure to an ESL setting. The Journal is by no means formal; instead of deciding on a particular format for my entries, I let them form themselves. I chose to approach the journal in this way so that my reflections could be seen in the clearest light, without the interference …
Using Distance Education To Improve Teaching In Namibia: Teachers' Views On An Inservice Training Program., Ndinovaameni Christian Shatona
Using Distance Education To Improve Teaching In Namibia: Teachers' Views On An Inservice Training Program., Ndinovaameni Christian Shatona
Master's Capstone Projects
Teacher education in Namibia is likely to involve more participants and more expenditure in the future. Analysis of the substance and character of teacher education programs as seen by the teachers are very important for the public. This study is a compilation of the thoughts of almost 70 teachers enrolled in a distance teacher education program. Their views are captured in conversations, observations, interviews and on questionnaires. Voice is an important aspect of the study, for both content and tone. The actual words of teachers have been quoted directly and at leng·h, so that they may speak for themselves, as …
Community Learning Groups: A Method In Adult Literacy For Community Participation And Learning, Sirkka Kapango Hamutenya
Community Learning Groups: A Method In Adult Literacy For Community Participation And Learning, Sirkka Kapango Hamutenya
Master's Capstone Projects
The study was done in the context of the Namibia National Literacy Program and was influenced by my working environment. While studying adult education, and by being exposed to a variety of philosophical views and ideas, I tried to reflect those views and ideas to the adult learner groups who graduated from the Namibia National Literacy Program as well as to those in the communities not attending any classes. The questions I had in my mind were the following: What can they do together to learn? How can they utilize their new skills to get involved in participatory community development. …
Adolescent Pragmatic Skills: A Comparison Of Latino Students In English As A Second Language And Speech And Language Programs, Alejandro Brice, Judith Montgomery
Adolescent Pragmatic Skills: A Comparison Of Latino Students In English As A Second Language And Speech And Language Programs, Alejandro Brice, Judith Montgomery
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
The purpose of this study was to compare the pragmatic performance of students from two adolescent groups-students receiving English as a second language (ESL) instruction versus bilingual students receiving speech-language (BSL) therapy. A pragmatics Screening scale (i.e., the Adolescent Pragmatics Screening Scale, Brice, 1992a) was used to measure pragmatic performance. The findings of this study indicated that the BSL students differed from the ESL students in expressing themselves, establishing greetings, initiating and maintaining conversations, listening to a speaker, and cueing the listener regarding topic changes. Both groups of students had difficulties regulating others through language. Thus, even language-intact students may …
Where Are The Women? A Report Into Issues Related To Women's Access To Workplace Literacy Programs, Marion Milton
Where Are The Women? A Report Into Issues Related To Women's Access To Workplace Literacy Programs, Marion Milton
Research outputs pre 2011
This study sought to investigate the provision of workplace literacy courses available for women in female dominated industries, and women's access to and participation in those courses. Further, it was intended to interview women who had dropped out or not accessed available courses.
Prior to discussing the study, it seems appropriate to locate it within the current economic, social and political climate of the Australian workplace, with a particular focus on the increasing demand for literacy skills.
