This thesis aims to investigate the issues surrounding California's Proposition 227, an important language policy passed in June of 1998 which drastically limited bilingual education. This proposition requires that all public school systems be in English only. Using a method known as Critical Discourse Analysis, this study exposes the underlying bias embedded in the discourse of newspaper articles from: the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Sacramento Bee. After analyzing articles from these newspapers various themes emerged which indicated that each newspaper adhered to either assimilationists' position which is conservative, or a pluralist position which is backed …

The purpose of this study will show that teaching is a career that involves a relatively high degree of stress. Without the proper coping skills or strategies, educators can face the risk of burn-out. The purpose of this study was to develop a parental guide for teachers and administrators that will help them to organize and implement 10 effective parent meetings for the parents of kindergartners in a Dual Immersion Program. Seven schools in San Bernardino City Unified School District have the Dual Immersion program. Out of those seven schools, only one of them holds monthly parent meetings.

This project explored the impact of the implementation of Proposition 227 on SAT-9 scores in grades 2-11 of the Leander Unified School District. Minimal growth in test scores was found as a result of replacing the bilingual programs with English-only programs, contradicting claims by proponents of the proposition.

Mediated structures are used to link the curriculum in the language arts with science materials. The purpose of this study was to connect English language learning (ELL) student's school life with their home life. Proposition 227, which prohibited the use of Spanish in the classrooms, has made it difficult to make the home-school connection. Research shows that parents play a vital role in the education of their children but Proosition 227 severely restricted Spanish speaking parents' participation in their child's education. This study demonstrates how the use of home response learning journals empowered parents to participate in their children's literacy and biliteracy development.
