The objective of this paper is to present aspects of the Japanese society and culture which may directly or indirectly affect the ESL class, specifically in a Japanese college or university. Teaching Oral Communication Skills Via Authentic Material: A Description And Analysis Of A Learning Experience In Japan, Philip B. Graham

This paper defines authentic material and describes how the language teacher can find or produce it. The author describes an approach to teaching oral communication skills in three demonstration lessons based on his experience teaching in Japan. The author then analyzes the learning process making the point that in this approach learners learn both language and process, communication skills and the process of learning communication skills. This is a report about teaching conditions in the private language schools based on my own direct experience and on information collected from interviews and from a questionnaire sent to schools in Kyoto and Osaka, Japan. The teaching conditions in lower secondary schools are also written in contrast to those of the private language schools. The questionnaries collected from each school are attached in this report.
