Globalisation And Migrant Labour In A 'Rainbow Nation': A Fortress South, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2008

Globalisation And Migrant Labour In A 'Rainbow Nation': A Fortress South, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

Outside southern Africa little attention has been given to the lively debates, particularly within South Africa, about migration, economic integration, racism/xenophobia and exclusion. After the collapse of apartheid the Southern African Development Community (sadc) developed initiatives on regional co-operation on population movement in a far-reaching 1995 Draft Protocol on Free Movement. However, the post-apartheid South African state was concerned solely with free trade and, with the support of other regional players, managed to halt the Protocol. The processes of neoliberal regional integration, socioeconomic transformations, poverty and inequality, as well as the political turmoil in countries of the sub-Saharan region, have …

Kατεδαφιζόμεθα Ή Καταρρέει Ένα Ιδεολόγημα, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The Emerging New Human Being, The Culture-In-The-Self, And Ahp's New Multidimensional Intercultural Initiative, Carroy U. Ferguson Jun 2008

The Emerging New Human Being, The Culture-In-The-Self, And Ahp's New Multidimensional Intercultural Initiative, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

The emerging New Human Being will need to explore and come to terms with a phenomenon, operating deeply, uniquely, and diversely at a core level of all human beings on the planet. I call this phenomenon the “culture-in-the-Self,” a term coined some years ago by cofounders of Interculture Inc. What we commonly think of as culture is just the surface of this phenomenon, often appearing outwardly in the diverse “forms” of cultural scripts, beliefs, values, behaviors, and customs). I want to call attention to what goes on beneath surface culture(s), and how AHP intends to play a primary role in …

Η Κύπρος Στα Δύσκολα Μονοπάτια Της Αλήθειας Και Της Συμφιλίωσης», [Cyprus Confronting The Difficult Pathway Of Truth And Reconciliation], Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

[In Greek] This paper is an attempt at approaching the issue of truth and reconciliation in Cyprus in a way that draws upon both the international as well as the local struggles and traditions, in an effort to critically integrate the knowledge, experiences and allow for reflectivity. What follows is a brief sketch of a more extensive paper which reflects upon the means, goals and ultimate objectives in a manner that is open-ended and non-exhaustive to contribute towards a debate on a subject that has not received its due attention . The paper draws upon some of the debates over …

Rethinking Reconciliation And Cooperation With View To Reunification In Cyprus: Challenges For Citizens, Political And Social Actors, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

Concept The conference aims to initiate a dialogue between the two communities on the concept as well as the potential for reconciliation and cooperation in Cyprus today: at a time when working groups and technical committees are engaged in a dialogue preparing the ground for the face to face meeting between the leaders of the two communities, academics, researchers, activists and concerned citizens cannot stand by and watch; they need to find ways to constructively engage in the debate over the future of Cyprus and contribute to building trust, communication and understanding between the two communities. The conference proposes to …

A Primary Human Challenge, Carroy U. Ferguson Apr 2008

A Primary Human Challenge, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

We may ask why, at both the individual and collective levels, it has seemed so difficult for us to choose to evolve our human games with Joy. There is no one answer for such a question, for each of us has the gift of free will. I will suggest, however, that built into our human games is what I call a primary human challenge. That primary human challenge is a dynamic tension, flowing from our creative urge for the freedom “to be” who we really are in our current physical form, and simultaneously to embrace our responsibility for our Being-ness.

Second Language Learners' Theories On The Use Of English Articles: An Analysis Of The Metalinguistic Knowledge Used By Japanese Students In Acquiring The English Article System., Yuko Goto Butler Apr 2008

Second Language Learners' Theories On The Use Of English Articles: An Analysis Of The Metalinguistic Knowledge Used By Japanese Students In Acquiring The English Article System., Yuko Goto Butler

Yuko G Butler

Although it is well known that many second language (L2) learners have trouble using articles “properly,” the primary causes of their difficulties remain unclear. This study addresses this problem by examining the metalinguistic knowledge of the English article system that learners employ when selecting articles in a given situation. By doing this, the present study attempts to better understand the process of “making sense” of the English article system by learners who are at different stages in their interlanguage development. Eighty Japanese college students with varying levels of English proficiency participated in this study. Immediately after completing a fill-in-thearticle test, …

“I Don’T Know”: Engaging With Problematic Moments In Multicultural Education, Stephanie Kent, James Cumming

Stephanie Jo Kent

“I Don’t Know” Engaging with Problematic Moments in Multicultural Education Marilyn Cochran-Smith (2000) describes a moment that occurred during a well-known and historically well-received pedagogical seminar that included addressing race and racism. As part of one session, Cochran-Smith invited a Native American colleague to share some of his experiences with the class. He concluded his presentation, near the end of the scheduled class period, by asking, “And what does this program do to help you examine questions about race and racism in teaching and schooling?” Cochran-Smith describes what happened next: Without hesitation, one student teacher, a Puerto Rican woman, raised …

The Linguistic Similarities Of Spanish Heritage And Second Language Learners, Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch

This article addresses the situation of lower-proficiency heritage language learners of Spanish in terms of their linguistic similarities to second language learners. The analysis highlights grammatical and lexical features in the oral discourse of Spanish heritage and second language learners at intermediate and advanced levels of study, establishing common linguistic ground between the two groups. Given the similarities, the article emphasizes the current need for courses designed to accommodate lower-proficiency heritage learners, integrating principles and aspects of second language acquisition theory and pedagogy.

Making Sense Of Academic Failure. Dissertation, Leena Her Dec 2007

Making Sense Of Academic Failure. Dissertation, Leena Her

Leena N. Her

This dissertation is an ethnography of first, how school participants in America make sense of academic failure and second, the consequences of their work. I study the methods they use and the explanations they invoke while engaged in this activity. I focus primarily on two groups of school participants in the American cultural landscape: educational researchers who are designated as the diagnosticians of the maladies of a "broken" educational system; and, students and school staff, who often have to explain the failure that they are confronted with. The analysis of how educational researchers traditionally make sense of academic failure utilizes …

The Hegemony Of English As A Global Language, Gulbahar Beckett, Yan Guo Dec 2007

The Hegemony Of English As A Global Language, Gulbahar Beckett, Yan Guo

Gulbahar Beckett

English, the first language of about 400 million people in Britain, the United States
and the Commonwealth, has become the dominant global language of
communication, business, aviation, entertainment, diplomacy, and the Internet. As
such, an estimated number of over a billion people speak it as their second or
foreign language. These second- and foreign-language speakers of English include
millions of migrant and immigrant English as a Second Language (ESL) schoolage
students (see Faltis, 2006) and over 560,000 international ESL university
students in the United States (Open Doors, 2006) and over 137,000 in Canada
(OECD, 2003). About a billion others in …

Measuring The Unmeasurable: Maternal Piety Scales, Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

Siti Aishah Hassan Ph.D.

The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that measures maternal spiritual characteristics. Particularly, the instrument aims to measure a domain of spirituality which is commonly regarded as “the un-measurable” i.e. Maternal Piety. The results provided evidence that the instrument achieved sound psychometrics properties.TLI, and CFI were > 0.90 and RMSEA was < 0.08 which were evidences for construct validity. Moreover, the findings supported the postulation that MP positively influenced MQR as evidence for the criterion-related validity. In short, Maternal Piety Scales is a reliable and valid instrument
