Explaining Academic Failure In The United States And Laos: Interpreting The Voices Of Hmong American And Hmong Lao Students, Leena Her

Leena N. Her

Claims about minority students' academic potentials are often used to explain the achievement gap between poor and minority students and their white counterparts in the United States. Alternatively, Professor Leena Her argues that as cultural citizens of the United States, ethnic minority students’ explanation of failure in the U.S. reveal much more about the culture and democratic ideology of the United States.

Creating Powerful High Schools For Immigrant And English Language Learning Populations: Using Past And Present Ideas In Today's Schooling Paradigm, Reynaldo Reyes, Leena Her

Leena N. Her

The high-stakes testing climate and the growing immigrant and English language-learning population have changed the face of teaching and learning in today's high schools. In this chapter, the authors emphasize the impact of a new paradigm of schooling based on high-stakes testing on Asian and Latin American students, as they represent the largest combined immigrant and ELL student populations. They discuss the research on high schools that have worked with significant numbers of immigrant and ELL students, and what can be learned from the ideas and programs that such schools have implemented. The authors argue that high schools in today's …

When Is A Student An English Learner?: An Ethnographic Account Of When Students And Educators Invoke The Institutional Identity "English Language Learner", Leena Her

Leena N. Her

This article complicates the articulation of the achievement gap between native English speakers and English learners (ELs) as a problem rooted in English language proficiency. I challenge the institutional and popular imagination that 5.1 million ELs in the United States are "limited in English proficiency" and whose performance in school can be attributed to limited English proficiency. This argument is drawn from eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in a northern California High School where students identified as ELs were not a homogeneous-ability group with similar language needs. Yet there were occasions when educators echoed the concerns of education reformers and …

Making Sense Of Academic Failure. Dissertation, Leena Her Dec 2007

Making Sense Of Academic Failure. Dissertation, Leena Her

Leena N. Her

This dissertation is an ethnography of first, how school participants in America make sense of academic failure and second, the consequences of their work. I study the methods they use and the explanations they invoke while engaged in this activity. I focus primarily on two groups of school participants in the American cultural landscape: educational researchers who are designated as the diagnosticians of the maladies of a "broken" educational system; and, students and school staff, who often have to explain the failure that they are confronted with. The analysis of how educational researchers traditionally make sense of academic failure utilizes …
