An Effective Methodology For Teaching Writing To Adolescent English Learners, Emily Hadfield
An Effective Methodology For Teaching Writing To Adolescent English Learners, Emily Hadfield
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This creative Honors project involves analyzing research in the area of second language acquisition and writing pedagogies for teaching English learners (ELs). The goal is to integrate several methodologies including the FIVES for Writing strategy and the process-writing approach to create a unit of lesson plans for teaching writing to 9th grade ELs. On examination of the research on pre-service teacher training and teaching writing to ELs, it is clear that there is a gap in the training and teaching of writing, particularly for ELs. This paper will synthesize research on best practices and find an effective methodology for teaching …
See And Be Seen: Young Adult Refugee Literature In The High School Curriculum, Patrice Splan
See And Be Seen: Young Adult Refugee Literature In The High School Curriculum, Patrice Splan
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are more than 25 million refugees in the world today, over half of whom are under the age of 18. As these young people adapt to new schools and communities, it is essential that all students have opportunities to see themselves represented in literature and to develop understandings of the experiences of others. This project provides an analysis of young adult refugee literature with a unit plan for application of texts in a ninth-grade Virginia English classroom, stressing the importance of education as a tool for awareness, reflection, and empathy.
Deaf Education: The Past, Present, And Future, Diana Burke
Deaf Education: The Past, Present, And Future, Diana Burke
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Back in the 1800's, sign language was banned from schools because of the prevailing view that sign language inhibited children who are deaf from interacting with the hearing society. Today, due to the growth of technology, children who are deaf can communicate using sign language and spoken language. These children can attend mainstream schools or schools for the Deaf. This paper will focus on the history of schools for the Deaf and my observations as a student observer at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (VSDB). VSDB is a residential school providing students who are deaf and blind …

In Translation: An Examination Of Esl Policy On Paper As It Relates To The Realities Of Implementation, Grace M. Cuevas
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This honors research project explores the features of Title III requirements as they relate to the actual experience of students and their families. This paper synthesizes my experience researching English as a Second Language (ESL) specific supports and policy to inform my time spent accompanying an upper-level administrator for the Harrisonburg City Public School (HCPS) system, and interviewing professionals at an area school. In this paper I outline the results of interviews with 13 service providers. Interviews examined the “letter of the law” and the subsequent “spirit of the law” through application of a social work lens to the different …
The Impact Of Dual Language Programs In Elementary Schools, Melanie Callihan
The Impact Of Dual Language Programs In Elementary Schools, Melanie Callihan
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The presence of dual language programs in Elementary schools is becoming increasingly popular across the United States. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the intent of such programs, the successful implementation of the programs, and the outcomes these programs produce. This was done through a literature review and research. The research was done on the current Dual Language Program that has been implemented in the Harrisonburg City Public schools. This study found that typically these programs are implemented to support populations of students in schools who are English language learners. In order to implement such a program there …

An Auto-Ethnographic Study Of Foreign And Native Language Education In The United States Of America, The Dominican Republic, And Spain, Mary Margaret Hawkins
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The paper is a reflexive ethnography documenting the researcher’s change and growth “as a result of doing fieldwork” (Ellis, Adams, & Bochner, 2011, p. 278) in the United States of America, the Dominican Republic, and Spain. The purpose of this research is to examine and reflect on the researcher’s journey of acquiring language proficiency in Spanish, developing cultural competence, and navigating cross-cultural interactions. This paper also explores how readily students may be able to access language education in both the native and foreign realms and examines the emphasis placed on language education in each of the countries, as observed by …
How Scholarship Programs Facilitate First-Generation College Students’ Involvement, Maria C. Restrepo Chavez
How Scholarship Programs Facilitate First-Generation College Students’ Involvement, Maria C. Restrepo Chavez
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
As a first-generation college student, I am interested in the on-campus involvement and experiences of other first-generation college students. First-generation college students are those whose parents did not receive a university degree and tend to come from low-income families. This project explores programs designed to support and enrich the experiences of such students. The Centennial Scholars Program at James Madison University and the Presidential Scholarship Initiative at Virginia Tech aim to increase the socio-economic diversity on each campus. These programs provide students with full funding for four years, mentorship, professional development and social benefits, among others. In turn, students become …
