Language Socialization Through An Oral Academic Presentation In An Efl Environment: A Qualitative Study, Remart Padua Dumlao

This article reports on a qualitative study that explored language socialization through an oral academic presentation in an EFL environment. Drawing from the notions of language socialization (Ochs & Schieffelin, 2011) and Community of Practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991), this paper sought to understand how learners negotiate their competence, as well as their identity in the oral academic activity. The participants were twenty-five student-teachers majoring in the English language at one Thai public university. Data were collected from classroom oral academic presentation transcript, multiple semi-structured interviews, classroom video-taped, and field notes. In this paper, I research how my background, in different times and within diverse spaces, has led me to exploring and working with specific Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programs. I am forever motivated to engage students learning second languages by providing them with possibilities to find out who they are, to know other ways of being and meet diverse peoples, to maintain languages more effectively and maintain culture(s) more authentically. Immigration, cultural capital, cultural hybridity are the contributing players within my autoethnographic research as a second-generation daughter of southern Italian migrants from the post war era. This autobiography of my lived experience identifies contributing influences of arrested development within my educational and life trajectory and explores theoretical frameworks as key comparative indicators for my thwarted stages of psychosocial development. Koreans, Americans, Or Korean-Americans: Transnational Adoptees As Invisible Asians, A Book Review, Tairan Qiu

The book, Invisible Asians: Korean American Adoptees, Asian American Experiences, and Racial Exceptionalism, explores the personal narratives and histories of adult adoptees who were born between 1949 and 1983 and who were adopted from Korea by White parents. Using oral history ethnography, Nelson (2016) seeks to correct, complicate, and contribute to current discussions about transnational adoptions. In this book review, the author provides an overview, a personal reflection, and recommendations for potential audiences of this book.
