This paper integrates Freirian ideas into reflections from one social justice educators’ practice within higher education. While the author originally learned about Freire in a limited fashion related to systems of oppression, dialogical approaches to education and the importance of praxis, Freire become reduced to a method for practice. Through an expanded reading of Freire’s broader works beyond Pedagogy of the Oppressed, “new” concepts related to class suicide, authority and freedom, political clarity, and epistemological circling complicate and illuminate a more robust reflection upon his own social justice education practice. The opening of free trade agreements in the 1980s caused major economic changes in Mexico and the United States. These economic activities spawned dramatic social changes in Mexican society. One young Mexican woman, Anay Palomeque de Carrillo, rode the tumultuous wave of these economic activities from her rural home in tropical southern Mexico to the factories in the harsh desert lands of Ciudad Juárez during the early years of the city’s notorious violence.

The Comprehension Of Metaphor By Preschool Children: Implications For A Theory Of Lexicon, Barbara Pearson

Comprehension of metaphor in preschoolers was studied through an elicited repetition task. Subjects were 52 children ages 3;0 to 5;2. Repetition performance on metaphors was compared to repetitions of semantically well-formed literal sentences as well as semantically anomalous sentences, all matched for length, vocabulary and sentence structure. Accuracy on literal and metaphoric stimuli were comparable and both were significantly better than performance on anomalous sentences. There were no effects for age or sex. It was shown that the metaphors were not semantically anomalous to the children and that they were processed on a par with literal language. The argument is …

This study is an in-depth investigation of the perspectives of Turkish immigrant parents on their children's early schooling in the United States (PreK-3). It specifically explores how these parents connect themselves or are disconnected from school culture, and how their socio-cultural understanding of education and teachers influence their relationships with schools. Using a qualitative research format, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 18 parents from 10 families. Findings suggest that Turkish parents negotiated the ways curriculum and instruction is constructed in American schools such as their assumption of the lack of academic rigor while they embraced sound pedagogies the …

This study strove for the application of inquiry based learning based on the principles of a constructive classroom environment versus traditional teaching where the learners are silenced and only interacting with their teacher. The results indicated that when given the chance and support, culturally and linguistically diverse children can better utilize their abilities through the opportunities that the inquiry based learning provides such as independent and group learning processes, role taking, and having more choices.

The Linguistic Similarities Of Spanish Heritage And Second Language Learners, Andrew Lynch

This article addresses the situation of lower-proficiency heritage language learners of Spanish in terms of their linguistic similarities to second language learners. The analysis highlights grammatical and lexical features in the oral discourse of Spanish heritage and second language learners at intermediate and advanced levels of study, establishing common linguistic ground between the two groups. Given the similarities, the article emphasizes the current need for courses designed to accommodate lower-proficiency heritage learners, integrating principles and aspects of second language acquisition theory and pedagogy.
