The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, specifically the TOON comic books during guided reading instruction. The instruction was provided to struggling readers by the Literacy Center at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. What most pre-service teachers in this study agreed upon was that comic books served as an effective tool for getting their students interested in reading. Reading comic books with tutors as partners in conversation with the struggling readers in this study was also a powerful medium for facilitating students’ literacy skills development, particularly in the areas of reading fluency and …

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. A Basic Qualitative Study Investigating The Use Of Differentiated Instruction In A High School Art Classroom, Kristen Bartkowski

Kristen Bartkowski

The initial purpose of this study was to understand how one art teacher applied aspects of differentiated instruction in her art classroom. In the review of literature, I documented research and theories about differentiated instruction, which showed an overlap between theories of constructivism and differentiated instruction.

The methodology relied on a basic qualitative case study in which I played the role of participant as observer. Through the use of observation, interview, and document analysis, I sought to uncover aspects of differentiated instruction that one high school art teacher applied in her classroom over a period of twelve weeks for one …

The aim of the present research is the presentation of a new method for teaching Greek traditional dance: the Laban-Notation teaching method. The proposed method combines the demonstration of the dance by the teacher with the rhythmic, motor and symbolic exploration of the four basic movement concepts: knowledge of body, spatial awareness, sense of effort, relationships, as these are defined by the Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) theory (Laban & Lawrence, 1974).
